Do you use a system to set benchmark rotation days for each month?
@FarmGate787 сағат бұрын
Yes pretty much. It is nothing fancy just knowledge of the area and work backwards from there. Winter works best at 107 day round through until August 1st and then aim for 23 days by 25th September. 21 with 2 days reserve (so 23) through until roughly 1st December (depending on moisture) Then build throughout December to 30 by 1st of January.

Does the young fellow never wear gum boots? We are going with jersey ‘semen’ don’t get into the nitty gritty of it just what the farm owner asked marine clay soils same size herd 120 cows but nice system 2 at Paeroa and only 2 calves were dehorned this year the rest are all poled same as last year
@FarmGate78Күн бұрын
Gosh, that's well along the polled pathway to only need to dehorn two! Good work. He has many pairs of gumboots and since day dot he always says he doesn't want boots on so he can run really fast. Apparently they slow him down too much! We have forced the matter when it is really cold but he will be waist deep in a muddle, drain or trough within the hour so I guess we gave up!

I'm crossing my herd with fleckvieh.i find there a lovely cross with hol fresian..good temperament although are very strong.i cross easy charlois on them that I'm not breeding from and are fantastic cattle.i think a better cross than jersey and great cull cow value or calf value if your selling calves.
@FarmGate782 күн бұрын
With beef prices how they are at the moment you can't really lose with Fleckvieh. Even if they don't work in the milking shed they would probably get more as a beef animal, than what you'd get for a dairy replacement. (Or maybe that is just because our BW/PW is so low)
@murraysmith63152 күн бұрын
😂😂Pure Jersey herd would put an end to your garden by the sounds of it! Three way cross, Fleckvieh, Jersey & Friesian?
@FarmGate782 күн бұрын
The end of the garden would have to be a tick in the pro's column for Jerseys. One less job! We have 2 three way crosses up in the heifers so that will be a good comparison to look out for.

How many ha's of hill do you spread by hand?
@FarmGate7817 күн бұрын
We have about 10 ha of steeper country, probably half is doable with the tractor, so lets say 5ha by hand. Not really enough to justify getting a chopper.

Great and informative channell. Your cows & heifers look great, and your grassland management looks reallly good. You must get a good amount of rain in your area, to have the grass that you have. On many other NZ video's the cows don't seem to have the lush grass that you guys have. I like that you take, making silage ,seriously. It costs money, and it's the cows feed for part of the year. We also farm a similar no of cows in Ireland, and our cows are also a mix of holstein and jersey, and we too are a bit obsessed with making silage, both pit and bales. Well done, and great to see a woman with such interest in the fine details of dairying and cows, and well able to work, wishing you continued success.
@FarmGate7820 күн бұрын
Thanks for your kind words Farmerjoe! Our rainfall is probably around the 1800mm per year. The grass is probably the lower stocking rate we run versus the average nz farm. I guess we are conservatively stocked to easily survive a bad year versus stocked for an exceptional year.

Why you choose fleckvich breed?
@FarmGate7820 күн бұрын
Hi Pedro, There are a couple of reasons why we are trying Fleckvieh. The Flechvieh x Holstein is quite common in The Netherlands and we seen a lot of really good crosses visiting herds there. Jurjen was also a judge for the old cow contest in The Netherlands a few times before he came to New Zealand. In that competition there was also some very impressive Fleckvieh x Holsteins.

Hi Tracey. Greetings from Australia. I love watching your videos. I was just wondering if any of your fleckvieh cross heifers coming through for next season had any Jersey in them, and if so how they turned out? I assume they’d look like a really Chunky Jersey, however I wasn’t sure. Also have you ever used any Guernsey genetics in your herd? Seems to be a fairly rare breed these days (in Australia anyhow) and I just wondered if any one was using them in NZ. Certainly don’t see many Guernsey’s in Australia. Thank you, -Luke
@FarmGate7820 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching! It is lovely to hear your enjoying them. There are 2 that are out of 50 % Holstein/ 50% Jersey. The red one in the video is one of them. The Jersey component in her is Danish and for some reason they come out red factor more often. We haven't tried Fleckvieh over our straight Jersey's yet because we put the best uddered ones to Jersey to get a straight Jersey herd bull. As for the guernseys, I only know of one "herd" (Maybe 100 guernseys within a larger herd) in New Zealand and I think that was dispersed a couple of years ago.

Wow, you'll be pleased to have the pain of burst appendix behind you! I suffered from this in the spring of 2006. Thanks for sharing, i personally think good quality hay is quite an under valued feed in the dairy industry, your farm is looking nice and green still, we are in central plateu and farm is looking like it normally would early February burnt and lots of stressed grass
@FarmGate78Ай бұрын
It is definitely undervalued. We were talking the other day that our rain volumes are actually really low. Probably for the last 18 months a fraction of the total average volume. We haven't got a single ml more than what was needed but the timing was good. So I could totally understand how in some places it is getting pretty bleak. Fingers crossed something turns up in the forecast for your area!
@lanemadsen6766Ай бұрын
Love your videos! Why do you like hay so much tho? I personally think it's a waste of grass, as it's so low in energy. I'm 145 cows on 50Ha grass only in the Waikato and I never once have thought 'man hay wud be nice to have right now.' I can see how in winter when we are on a 120 day round it wud help the cows be more content but I still don't see it being cost effective.
@FarmGate78Ай бұрын
We view it as a health food. If a cow is unwell it seems to be the first thing she goes for. It balances out the grass in periods of imbalance so when bloat is around etc etc. We also think it is excellent for cows with eczema because its low in chlorophyll. Really valuable transitioning springers Impossible to make on high stocked farm though so I totally get what you mean.
