Another fun video. Personally if you have a loose footed main I’d put the reefing lines round the boom with a bowline and use the plastic eyes just as a guide then they don’t have to take any strain. That’s how I have always made up my reefing lines and never had an issue n many thousands of miles off shore. I also always put ceasing wire through my shackles if I’m going off shore to ensure they don’t come undone. E.g. bang, topping lift etc.

Even with your stainless steel fitting I would not trust it because it relies on screws which will eat their bedding with electrolysis. Besides that, the forces working on that fitting are trying to pull the aft one out and that is a serious weak point. Why not consider some dyneema lashing and stainless shackle as this would be much stronger.
@contessa26-jim13 күн бұрын

Good Job. I've been using OpenCPN on my last 3 laptops, with a USB GPS puck receiver. I download charts with my 'home' computer and store them on a NAS drive (Western Digital with wired network, not usb - it was a couple hundred USD several years ago) and just copy them over to the network when needed on the traveling laptop. US Charts are all free - either raster scan or ENC-style; But the US is deprecating all the paper-based (raster scan) in the next few years. IDK about any other country's charts.

As a more general comment. Did you consider just a receiver? The full system is both expensive and power hungry. Do you run it 24/7? In good weather, daytime, it is not necessary. Can you switch it to receive only.
@contessa26-jim15 күн бұрын
I had a receive only unit on my previous boat, of course one is safer if the big ships have an opportunity to notice you, so I feel much more secure with this. @rolty1 Thanks for responding. I asked because I have Pi 4 setup with Openplotter/OpenCPN and o-charts but not tried any other charts. I have managed to integrate it with the old stowe/robertson databox/dataline instruments that were on the boat when I got it, plus AIS via a daisyhat. It seems to work quite well, but I've not had much chance to use it in anger yet. I also have a small portable 4g router that I use for WiFi connectivity between the Pi, a tablet, a phone, and for updates when in port. This also enables vnc to be used from a tablet on deck to see and control the Pi/OpenCPN. This is fine for viewing but I find the vnc interface a bit clunky when trying to make changes, as controlling the mouse is not very intuitive.
@contessa26-jim15 күн бұрын
@@eleanordeboat4191 My Pi4 was fine until it wasnt! I too had the vpn etc and it was clunky and my phone didnt like to connect.. I genuinely enjoy watching your antics/the fact you’re putting yourself out there, regardless of how amateur or unpolished it may look at the time. Slow, steady camera movements seem to be the key to youTube success, like the most basic requirement. And I think you’re proficient in a way, that everything you touch-on is greatly appreciated by people like me who dream about sailing. I need you to look out for your health because in a year or two I’d really enjoy having you show me how to sail. Something tells me a well sorted contessa 26 can make a competent sailor out of any of us. I really like the wind vane setup you have., the way it’s attached onto the rudder, the copper bottom paint, etc. etc You & the lil boat make a great team, like you compliment, complete & look after each other. I caught some older content from when you had her in the Caribbean. Could you simply retell those stories while sitting at the mooring? Yeah the footage of the snorkeling, bottom cleaning wasn’t Jacques Cousteau-like. When did you buy her? What was it like sailing down and back to the Caribbean? Does a pocket cruiser like green T even need new fangled winches? What kinda shape is the standing rigging, could you DIY some new shrouds if necessary? If you sailed as far as the Caribbean did you take along a life-raft? It goes without saying your participation in the jester challenges are epic, if I had some xtra dough your channel would be my 1st pick to support.
@miceinamatchbox22 күн бұрын
Great to hear from a follower from years ago.. the Caribbean boat was a Contessa 32, it was about 4 years ago I traded down to the 26, a long story actually! The original tufnol winches on the 26 are fine, they work great and I have no plan to change them, I think they add to the character.. The Co32, Chaos, I bought in about 2009, and Green Tambourine in 2021. Standing rigging is pretty good, and I go aloft to inspect before each offshore trip. I would sleep better if it was new, but it isnt that old and the boat had done practically nothing for quite a few years before I bought her. The 32 was no problem at all for the Atlantic circuit, and I would expect the 26 to be just as good, perhaps slightly slower and slightly more bouncy. I did have a life raft most of the time in the Caribbean. Thanks for your support!! :)

Come on Jim , surely you got a fine adjustment tool aboard , every one has a fine adjustment tool . I've got three , all different sizes of course . Right lets get serious here , i had no doubt it would fit , you got too deep into this job seemingly straight off . I would have released the boom fitting and then checked it fitted before i got too deep into it , and i'm 90% sure that's exactly what you did . Get an oval shackle for the vang , their rounded at both ends with a side screw/bolt that won't jam . Further thoughts are that i personally i would get more than one of those parts , and replace all those plastic eyes , reefing and all . I can't think why any serious mast outfitter would use plastic , but there you go . Maybe a bit pricey being stainless , but at least you'd know you're fairly secure in a blow . What would happen if you put a reef in and a plastic eye broke again , you'd either have to double reef , or shake the reef , and go over canvassed . Yes you could jury rig something , but would you want to on a pitching deck . Loosing a roller over the side , yeah well it happens , at least you can make another . A mate of mine lost his phone over the side , he couldn't make another one of those . I've been lucky , i've only ever lost pins . And now on saying that ?????? . Camera work was good mate (after all you were trying to do a job) , and surprisingly voice was the same . Wind had very little effect , but i know what your saying , and yes it will happen at some point .
