My wife and I heard this song for the first time played by a Russian guy at a Thanksgiving dinner. Never really recovered from the experience... Hayes Carll is a genius.

One bit of humor that I think everyone misses is the last word of this song that appears on the internet as "Amen." But I think Carll is actually sing "Aw, man!" in a churchified way so that it sounds like"amen." Another genius comic touch by Carll that is consistent with the character singing this song who really knows nothing about church and nothing about amen.

Incredible they had this on the boondocks. Tuning my ears without even knowing it. I found Isabella’s work working at a record shop in the east village NYC and didn’t know I had already heard her on the boondocks. Life is a trip.

I love Isabelle’s voice for this song. Its what makes this song so emotional and Beautiful. Not many people talk about her at all, despite the power she lent for this song and many others

My drummer was at an acoustic show in Nashville somewhere and heard this song and shared it with me. I just gotta say, that is some creative songwriting! I laughed! I understand that it's not for everyone, but as a singer songwriter, this was great! Just putting that out there. 🤣😂🤣😂👍✌️

It was real hard watching Huey cry. I've felt exactly what he has felt before. It is such a helpless hopeless feeling. Just an angry confused sad helpless cry. When you try so hard to do something you believe in and still feel like a failure type of cry. Man.

We've been datin' since high school We never once left this town We used to go out on the weekends And we'd drink till we drowned But now she's actin' funny And I don't understand I think that she's found her Some other man She left me for Jesus And that just ain't fair She says, that he's perfect. How could I compare She says, I should find him And I'll know peace at last But if I ever find Jesus I'm kickin' his ass She showed me a picture All I could do was stare At that freak in his sandals With his long purty hair They must think that I'm stupid Or I don't have a clue I bet he's a Commie Or even worse yet a Jew She left me for Jesus And that just ain't fair She says, that he's perfect. How could I compare She says, I should find him And I'll know peace at last But if I ever find Jesus I'm kickin' his ass She's givin' up whiskey And taken up wine Why, she prays for his troubles And has forgot about mine I'm a gonna get even I can't handle the shame Why the last time we made love She even called out his name She left me for Jesus And that just ain't fair She says, that he's perfect. How could I compare She says, I should find him And I'll know peace at last But if I ever find Jesus I'm kickin' his ass It could have been Carlos Or even Billy or Ted But if I ever find Jesus He's gonna wish he were dead Ahhh, man
