In aluminum casting, I would be up around 1300 rpm. The formula is (cutting speed X 4)divided by diameter of the cutter. With a coated cutter, your cutting speed is about 250sfpm.
@Mike_Classic_Cars-GMCMotorhome16 күн бұрын
@@michaelmileski9830 I would think feed rate would factor in the formula
@michaelmileski983016 күн бұрын
Feed rate is rpm x number of teeth x chipload. That cutter in aluminum can take .008 per tooth. You can run that a lot harder than you can ever image, but going with what ever speed you feel comfortable with, is not a bad choice. Put more lube on, your biggest issue with this job is going to be aluminum sticking to the cutter.

Mike, good to see a new video. As we had talked at the June rally, my coach has the gm throttle body injection from a 90s 454. With my setup, I have the stock intake with the heat tube blocked off. Gm throttle body and stock air cleaner. All fits with no floor modification. Then I have a flex dryer hose off the snout of air cleaner to the Ragusa cold air scoop which is mounted in the slot of the grill to get outside air rather than hot air from engine bay. The only thing my system lacks is an intake air temp sensor which i plan to add for better fuel trim. For you, as the other mentioned I think the slope is due to cars having engine tilt for standard tail shaft transmission it compensates so carb is flat or level for floats. I think you could plane that off just above the runners, retaps the screw holes and seal them off. I don’t know how much that would affect performance if any due to shortening the length of intake. Probably negligible. If you’re dead set on the current do you have then I’d go that route. Unfortunately, I heard Bob R from dynamic efi passed away this summer. He was the guy who made the flashable board that replaced the factory chip in the gm ecm. I haven’t heard of anyone else worked there or is taking over. But if you weren’t set on using your current efi then I would suggest the gm one. With it I have knock sensor, electronic timing, etc. I think you mentioned yours doesn’t do timing? Also with the gm ecm, I found a newer electric cruise servo and with the speed sensor I’ll be able to have tap up/down cruise as well. But I have to replace coolant hoses before I do too much. Hope to see you at a rally this summer

I'm planning fuel injection on mine too. I like the idea of a pony tank with the high pressure pump in it like most cars are built today. Being in the fuel keeps the pump cooler and knock down the noise. One thing I've seen is that you want to recirculate your fuel back to the tank. Have a port near the top of the pony tank that goes back to the tank and have the incoming port use a dip tube to put the new fuel to the bottom of the pony tank.
@Mike_Classic_Cars-GMCMotorhome19 күн бұрын
Thanks for the information I will have a tank return, I will have to see if a dip tube is possible with the tank I purchased.

I'm a machinist by trade for the last 40+ years. To me, it looks like you can take the whole thing down to the top the of runner castings. Just watch for interference with the new throttle body. Especially with the throttle lever. As far as the studs go, if those holes are at an angle, you can plunge mill them square to the new surface and put in a Heli-coil.

Nice project! The Q-jet is a good carb for this application imo. The best part about keeping it carbureted is that you stand more of a chance of fixing it on the side of the road vs the fast system. You may check with Mike's Carburetors for a quality rebuild. You may watch Thunderhead289 Uncle Tony's Garage and Unity Motorsports Garage and search their carb tuning and ignition videos. These guys have some great info. One thing that helps carb setups the most is having a fuel system that keeps a constant fuel pressure on the needle and seat. Thunderhead289 has some good videos on this. If you don't want to mess with the fuel delivery system to much putting a fuel filter near the carb that has the 3rd port that let's pressure and vapor bleed back to the tank this helps with some carb issues if not wanting to go with a regulated return system. It's hard to beat a carb and hei when ser up right. If your trying to tune by the book good luck those settings are not for the modern fuels of today. You need to spend time and tune to what the engine wants not what you think it needs start with ignition then work toward carburation. Thunderhead289 has a cool product that's called Carb-Cheater that would work well on something like this.

Thanks for the input and I agree with the fixing it on the side of the road part. My goal is not to be on the side of the road. I've been restoring/ rebuilding vehicles my whole life and updating to modern technology has been my favorite part of the process. I want the vehicle to look vintage but perform like it is brand new. Fuel injection is far and wide the best fuel delivery system.
@blakegaddis9465 ай бұрын
@Mike_Classic_Cars-GMCMotorhome I agree with you if it's a factory style fi system. I myself like updating when it makes sine but with the aftermarket options we have I can't say any of them give me the warm fuzzies if going on a 1000 mile road trip unfortunately. I know I can limp a carburetor down the road, but if an aftermarket ecu gives up the ghost, there's not much I can do about that and getting that part in a timely manner just isn't going to happen.
@Mike_Classic_Cars-GMCMotorhome5 ай бұрын
I have 20 years of experience with a FAST EFI system and it is flawless. In today's world I can overnight a part just about anywhere in the US. Getting a factory style ECM correctly flashed would be far more difficult than an aftermarket one that I can upload myself.

I'm looking at doing something similar for fuel injection. I was thinking that I would use the mechanical fuel pump to fill the pony tank. With a gallon or more of fuel in there, if you uncover the fuel pickup on a hill or get vapor lock, you have a built in reserve to keep going. Having it pump more fuel through the pony tank than is needed will keep the fuel from getting hot in the pony tank.
@Mike_Classic_Cars-GMCMotorhome5 ай бұрын

Worked on probably a 100 qjets on motor homes, make sure the float is absolutely correct(use your finger to hold the D-ring in place, don’t use your finger on the needle and seat). The base gasket on the manifold needs to protect the carb from heat, q-jets will boil! Used to used a pretty thick gasket cause all that engine heat is up by the carb, the doghouse makes it worse. Don’t over torque the carb to manifold this ruins the top carb cover and warps it. The choke has a small lever and rod that can be a little tricky to get back together, I’d put the carb on its side and use a small pick tool to get it in the right position, then put the choke housing in place. Sorry it was so long, just want you to be successful. Q-jets are FI if you know what you’re doing!
