I had Rick's carb shop in daytona FL rebuild mine. Man, he is amazing!! Bolt on and go ! 454 in my rig.

Hey Mike , after fixing Quadra jet , then it needed a professional re build . so after 50 for first gaskets and second professional rebuild a year later same thing drip. so i found a brand new Quadra jet from china or some where 200 bucks , best thing i ever did , had tried the edlebrock answer and was not happy .

Quadra-junk's are very useful if re- build correctly... !!! .. Hint - they have main caps on bottom side of main jet bores (( must have aircraft Apoxy applied to them .. then you are GOOD .. )) The downside is you have to take the carburetor all the way down to do this... In other words, get another gasket kit TOO .. !! I would try this before changING the EFI... Unless you plan to drive this thing across country non-stop... Oh, the other thing I would do is get another quarterget carburetor and have it rebuilt correctly and ready to go. Just swapped them out TAKES ONLY 15 minutes....

I do plan on driving across the country. The Q-jet is a great carburetor for its time. Modern EFI is much better unless there is an EMP. I'll keep the Q-jet just in case.

Worked on probably a 100 qjets on motor homes, make sure the float is absolutely correct(use your finger to hold the D-ring in place, don’t use your finger on the needle and seat). The base gasket on the manifold needs to protect the carb from heat, q-jets will boil! Used to used a pretty thick gasket cause all that engine heat is up by the carb, the doghouse makes it worse. Don’t over torque the carb to manifold this ruins the top carb cover and warps it. The choke has a small lever and rod that can be a little tricky to get back together, I’d put the carb on its side and use a small pick tool to get it in the right position, then put the choke housing in place. Sorry it was so long, just want you to be successful. Q-jets are FI if you know what you’re doing!

Thanks for the information, for now the Q-jet will stay in service but fuel leaks on top of the engine are not acceptable. I will convert it to FI this winter.

Nice project! The Q-jet is a good carb for this application imo. The best part about keeping it carbureted is that you stand more of a chance of fixing it on the side of the road vs the fast system. You may check with Mike's Carburetors for a quality rebuild. You may watch Thunderhead289 Uncle Tony's Garage and Unity Motorsports Garage and search their carb tuning and ignition videos. These guys have some great info. One thing that helps carb setups the most is having a fuel system that keeps a constant fuel pressure on the needle and seat. Thunderhead289 has some good videos on this. If you don't want to mess with the fuel delivery system to much putting a fuel filter near the carb that has the 3rd port that let's pressure and vapor bleed back to the tank this helps with some carb issues if not wanting to go with a regulated return system. It's hard to beat a carb and hei when ser up right. If your trying to tune by the book good luck those settings are not for the modern fuels of today. You need to spend time and tune to what the engine wants not what you think it needs start with ignition then work toward carburation. Thunderhead289 has a cool product that's called Carb-Cheater that would work well on something like this.

Thanks for the input and I agree with the fixing it on the side of the road part. My goal is not to be on the side of the road. I've been restoring/ rebuilding vehicles my whole life and updating to modern technology has been my favorite part of the process. I want the vehicle to look vintage but perform like it is brand new. Fuel injection is far and wide the best fuel delivery system.

@Mike_Classic_Cars-GMCMotorhome I agree with you if it's a factory style fi system. I myself like updating when it makes sine but with the aftermarket options we have I can't say any of them give me the warm fuzzies if going on a 1000 mile road trip unfortunately. I know I can limp a carburetor down the road, but if an aftermarket ecu gives up the ghost, there's not much I can do about that and getting that part in a timely manner just isn't going to happen.

I have 20 years of experience with a FAST EFI system and it is flawless. In today's world I can overnight a part just about anywhere in the US. Getting a factory style ECM correctly flashed would be far more difficult than an aftermarket one that I can upload myself.

I can't help but agree with you, but I think fuel injection is a leap forward.

Fitech had to redesign the system with a few improvements. The holly setup has a few hiccups. You might be trading in one headache for another. Send the carb off to TA Performance (Google) They're Buick but the rebuild's going to be as close as you're going to get for your 455 and it will actually be spot on. Make sure you get a good phenolic gasket and you will be good to go.

@@dennisschmitter7310 I had one in a 76 triumph tr7 with a 2 speed power glide and 3.08 posi from a mustang. It fit under the stock hood.

How do you know the Mike Clark torque spec? I think that may have been what the previous owner did.

I'll keep you posted on how well the FAST EZ-EFI works. Hopefully it is as good as their TPI setup I have had on my Vette for the last 20 years.
