In high school I had a “Strict” 10:30 pm curfew to retire to bed. The Tonight show started at 10:30 CST and every night I’d stall while hiding in the hallway just over my parent’s shoulder with a toothbrush in my mouth. It was cruel punishment to yell at me to “get to bed”! And Miss Johnny’s monologue!!

The Voyagers are great achievements, along with the Pioneers and New Horizons. After 47 years the Voyagers are still in operation. Great American technology. I studied radio communications electronics and had two chapters on space communications. From what I saw I can imagine how complicated it gets.

I am 54 now and watched Johnny all my life it seems. I was 21 that night in 1992 and watched the show with my mother who is gone now. So many memories ❤

I was 27 then. I absolutely love finding these reruns of the tonight show. I realized there were types of jokes they got away with then that wouldn’t fly today! And, some of the most memorable jokes too ever made on that show. When Johnny retired he completely retired. It would have been great to see an occasional guest appearance by him on anything at all! In High school I had a 10:30 pm strict bedtime which really ticked me off since the show came on at the same time CST I would find ways to stall even would hide in the dark hallway to not miss his monologue! I remember recording this and Leno’s first show on VHS. I was a kid at the time and 30 years seemed like such a huge amount of time. In that span he was on the air so many things changed in the United States. JFK, RFK, and MLK were gone, civil rights legislation was passed, man landed on the moon, the currency went off the Gold Standard, Vietnam war, abortion legalized, birth control, free love, Reaganomics, supersonic passenger jet travel was available etc. From 1992 to 2022 was not nearly as impressive or notable. Smartphones and tech ruined things like this show where most Americans of all types came together to view and it was part of the culture. It is so fragmented now. Leno turned out to be a putz with his entire routine about Bill Clinton’s infidelity for a solid decade like how Steven Colbert’s entire show has Donald Trump syndrome now. Carson had class above everything. It was just a different time. The last show to have this formula was Tom Snyder on CBS Late Late show in the late 90s when he had no studio audience and did interviews. That show and when Carson was on Tonight were gold

It didn’t look like his show yet. He was still in Johnny’s studio, under the thumb of Helen Kushnik, with a humorless bandleader. It would take a couple years. Fire Kushnik, move to smaller studio, bring in Eubanks…then he had fun.

It's Sat. 12-7-2024 & I'm watching all the re-runs of Jay Leno & making me laugh.Love the Monday nite Headlines,Fruitcake Lady & all the others.Sure do miss him at 11:35 pm.He was the King of late nite after Johnny Carson.Also I 🙏for healing for your wife Mavis.
