5:42 Say, I’ve got one simpler question: Could and would this be possible with ultra-long pointed woodless graphite, graphite pencil, art stick, woodless colored pencil, woodless charcoal, chalk, or hard or soft pastel? Please answer the question to me, and thanks.

I've been drawing a few months consistently to help discover myself authentically. Rather than trying to draw what I want, I see what wants to emerge and focus on drawing that out, in a fast motion. Today I posted it in a group and some lovely people told about gesture drawing and Kimon Nicolaides book. You might tell from that snippet that I am not a trained artist, but I have been unconsciously drawing my entire life. I spill coffee I see a face in it and help it emerge before wiping it up. Creating for me is about discovering myself authentically and "re-illustrating" my self after the first 7 years of my life being traumatic, for the next 27 years that trauma affected me deeply. Now with scribbles from shaky hands I find in being what we are authentically, which may seem the scariest thing to be, is own innate creativity. Your lines are just that, they are yours and when we learn to be accountable for our lines, they develop. Thank you for sharing his picture, i used it as a figure and made him move around it like in his drawings to help me commit this to memory. Thank you for the amazing content, I feel i am where I am supposed to be. Kind regards, Leon.

would this book be good as a first professional resource? I have drawn very on and off for the past 2 years, and I'm still an extreme amateur. I have great problems with finding an approach that helps me improve effectively, and thought this book might be a saving grace, but have my doubts with regards to my skill level

It's perfect for anyone who is doing figure drawing.. A great book to learn to draw from the very beginning is "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. Off the record, I think this book The Natural Way to Draw is an excellent book for beginners, anyone who is starting to draw - some people think that if you are doing figure drawing, that's already advanced, but personally I only really "learnt how to draw" when I started with figures, and with this book in particular

Good question - it's a Moleskin paper back sketch book. I think I bought it in a pack of 3. It's great for portability, and the paper is lovely if you draw with pen or graphite. Not so great for charcoal or wet media.

As always I leave your video with many things to think about. I draw daily, doing countless 30- and 60-second gesture drawings, but find it maddeningly hard to leave aside the drive toward detail and accuracy. Now and then a drawing feels alive, and with those I am aware of having felt alive while making them. Perhaps that is enough. Thank you. I also enjoy your Substack greatly.

"Now and then a drawing feels alive, and with those I am aware of having felt alive while making them. " ... That's ALL there is!! That is what this is all about and nothing else. I'm soooo excited to hear you say this - I totally get that there are still parts to your drawing that you are working with / struggling with, but believe me, to have those moments of the drawing feeling alive and your connection - that is the compass that you've finally found. Know that those moments will guide you towards a lifetime practice that will only get better. They may not be very often - I can count those moments that I've had myself - and you might still feel frustrated when a drawing doesn't work, but re-orienting towards that feeling each time will never let you down. This is the exact key to unlock the door. So thrilled to read this comment! Thanks for this, and thank you for your support here and reading the posts on sub stack. I appreciate it!

Just also to say your recent ones focus on some male models that are fantastic, you're really amazing with male anatomy in my humble opinion, you really capture the weight and power that each one has in a pose very precisely and bring that power into the drawing ! @@h.sinclair honestly that means so much to hear, coming from you, I really appreciate this - so glad you "get" this approach! I'm always trying to describe that power in the male form, and I find that it can be a very subtle aspect, and sometimes it doesn't even require to draw the defined muscle shapes, in order to describe or get that feeling across. The new model reel on New Masters Academy has a really wonderful model, and I think he is very inspiring to draw. Oh and thanks for asking for Jessie, my faithful studio assistant! Beautiful “quiet” drawing. You are so right about the importance of the eye direction, but for me, sadly, the drawing is mostly totally ruined when I try to draw the features of the face. I must practice! I do like the more “finished” drawing so I am definitely going to try five minute drawings, maybe a little longer 😉, and see if I can achieve that.

Your videos are so awesome and helpful! Thank you! I'm somewhat new to figure drawing, and I find since my approach has been generally more expressive/intuitive, I tend to get confusion over the construction aspect (for example relationship of hips to torso, how the shoulders connect to the body, etc.). How do you recommend getting a better understanding of construction without relying on a method that solely focuses on construction?
@Drawing-Life
@Drawing-Life 15 күн бұрын
Thank you so much for this comment! It's a great question, especially for beginners, or if you are starting out with the figure. My approach is to treat construction and structure as a learning tool, not an end goal - so don't be too worried about focusing on this, if you are willing to treat it as a learning tool. Studying structure in a rigid, rules-based way might actually help you to conceptualist the forms into something you understand (eg, realizing the hips counter the shoulders, and that makes the torso move). But then, ..... I definitely believe that this study needs to be accompanied by an equal focus on gesture and expressive drawing in order to put that academic understanding into a DRAWN, felt, and personal expression. The two sides to drawing the figure - anatomy, and gesture - are separate but very much mutually supportive. i hope this answer helps in some way?! Let me know if you have any other questions. (Also, try to go to life drawing if you can!).
@racoonattackable
@racoonattackable 12 күн бұрын
@@Drawing-Life Thank you so much for your informative reply! I will definitely be working toward studying both the structure and expressive/gesture drawing. I think since I find the construction aspect to be less interesting I'm already naturally more inclined for the emphasis to be on expressive/gesture drawing but alas I will probably try to work on construction at least a little. Also, have been attending life drawing and will continue! Thanks again!
