Scott Drinkwater made a comment a few weeks ago in a post game interview about how the Cowboys recently changed their defensive structure in the last few rounds. Have you got anything on this/can break it down?

Will have a look this week 🤝

To juxtapose the slowing down of the ruck on the defensive end, I notice a lot of players who try to get a quick play-the-ball often take one or two steps off the mark (either forwards or to the side) to take the markers out of the play and push the defensive line back even further. I also notice players push or shove markers out of the way when playing the ball, meaning that the markers are not square anymore and aren’t able to impact the next play. It’s something that’s become quite rife in our game and I wish the ref’s would be more cognisant of it and either pull up the play and warn the attacking players not to do it, or penalise them, just as how the defensive team gets penalised if they conversely try to slow down the ruck. Common offenders include Cam Munster, Herbie Farmsworth and Kyle Feldt.

Just tune in, you can see a break down of Tigers attack and defence most weeks. They're good like that.
@emayteetee62322 ай бұрын
A breakdown of the Tigers 'defence' is borderline impossible given they ship 40+ a week. It'd be like watching a bloke getting whacked over and over with a stick.
@Sebastian-rr7de2 ай бұрын
Insightful video as always bro. I've heard Storm also push the boundaries in terms of being offside. In some games they are constantly offside because they know the ref won't penalise them. This helps give their defensive line better line speed. Maybe a good topic for a video: which teams are the best at pushing the rules.
@RLWriters2 ай бұрын
There's probably some AAMI Park advantage in these examples but you can never control the ref. The better teams do all these little things right to best control what they can.
@smilewhenyourbleedin2 ай бұрын
What do you mean you heard this lol some random online said it? Every team pushes boundaries...storm aren't off side more than anyone else. Ridiculous statement

They're also experts at getting tangled up in the ruck.
@Sebastian-rr7de2 ай бұрын
@@smilewhenyourbleedin Nope, an unbiased analyst at a recent game. It's not uncommon knowledge mate. Storm are well known for pushing the rules to the limit and coaching their teams to take advantage of certain refs.

Sua is an absolute cheat code. No one can keep up with him on a scrum. Should be a try every time. Honestly NRL teams should score a lot more frequently on scrums imo. A 4-2 split with your most potent weapon at first receiver is near impossible to stop if executed well
@RLWriters2 ай бұрын
He's a problem in these areas for sure. Not every NRL team has a Sua, though. The better teams are finding new ways to play to their strengths (eg Roosters with Manu and Dragons with Sloan/Suli)

Hey mate. I am a student in sports science and was wanting to learn more about NRL for the future, do you have any suggestions/advice on how to learn more about the tactical/technical side of the game? only really know about the physical requirements/expectations and injury risks. Feel like having as much rounded game knowledge as you do would be very beneficial for programming and training in the future.

Penrith get away with excessive holding down in the ruck, as players are trying to get to their feet to play the ball they constantly push against the player or push down on the head. This she be called 6 again for not clearing the play the ball but barely ever does. Why is this? When plenty of other teams are getting picked for it 🤷🏾♂️

It's a game of millimetres and milliseconds and Penrith do it best.

More choke style tackling does seem to be becoming increasingly important to various teams approaches. I think it's interesting to see various teams rules for choke tackling. Watched Darryl Powell coached Wakefield recently and they were going for choke tackles as their standard defensive preference which had the obviously pro of slowing ruck speed but the effort commited was incredible and it did tire them, particularly when they tried to utilise this on plays where there was less benefit.

Can you analyse as well what they should have done. Say Cook makes that pass what can Hughes and Katoa do at that point to stop it or was it just they should have matched up better knowing Cook can produce a long quick pass.
@RLWriters3 ай бұрын
Meaney turning in created the overlap there, but that quick two-pass shift had already put a lot of stress in Melbourne's line. Pretty nice involvement from Cody too - sometimes it's just good footy I reckon.

If I was blues coach I’d start Watson at 9, bring Robson on for Watson at the 30 ish minute mark then bring Watson back on at around the 60 minute mark. Robson will still be fresh to end the game in the middle which is key, and Watson has free reign to do his thing late in game. I love the hunt / Grant dynamic and feel that Queensland an upper hand

Great analysis as always and it's great to see the build up to scoring trys goes way beyond the highlights reel. Is it possible to do an analysis on the defensive system that Cameron Ciraldo has developed at the Bulldogs? Everyone is talking about it but it would be great to see how it is different to the systems of other teams.

I'll keep a closer eye in the coming weeks 👍I'm not sure they're doing anything majorly different, I'd guess they're just doing all the little things (winning the ruck, marker details, inside support, spacing, counting numbers etc) better than in previous years.
