NRL Analysis: Introducing the double-lead shape

We see new attacking trends appear each year in the NRL and it's the double-lead shape that has dominated the start to the 2024 regular season.
Attacking teams are always on the lookout for new ways to breakdown the defence and the double-lead shape is the latest little variation to the more traditional block shape.
The presence of two bodies in tight formation demands attention from defenders and we saw a few clubs capitalise on the influence that shape has on the defensive line to create points in NRL Round 9.

Saw a good double lead example from a retro Challenge Cup highlight on Huddersfield Giants twitter for their Challenge Cup preview where they have a wrap around orignating from behind play the ball off the outside double lead run. They also used the inside man in the double lead to contact the inside defender preventing him from being able to provide cover to the outside edge. A nice twist on the concept
