The herta pattern, playing it with my feet, it has taken me 6 months just to get the pattern down with my feet, then applied my hands to it, creating grooves, which is taking another 6 months. Now I can play it with little problems.

I agree. The only down fall to a lot of practising is if you feel to use new chops you’ve learnt in songs that don’t require it because you’re dieing to get them out. But that’s more of an issue of being musical minded and always remembering to serve the song than over practising. But many drummers do fall into this trap.
@grantcollins
@grantcollins 2 ай бұрын
Totally. We always have to remember that we're playing music first and foremost. I know one great creative outlet for me was to actually write my own songs that I could use some of the more creative things I was working on. I do also find that the best drummers can put some very complex things into songs without them sounding complex. I think that's part of the art where we can play things that may be quite difficult to execute, but the listener is not aware of it, and it doesn't take away from the song. But yes I do agree that drummers can fall into the trap of putting their latest lick into every song. 🙂.

HOW DO YOU USE A 360 DRUMKIT? DOES UR THRONE ALSO ROTATE?? or do you just orient yourself in the right place to hit stuff you need to use per song? I just don’t get how the flow works, no hate at all it’s a sick kit!
@grantcollins
@grantcollins 2 ай бұрын
The kit isn't a full 360. There's still a good sized gap in the back where I get in and out of. From sitting front on, I can get good access to 85% of the whole kit. It's very ergonomically set up so everything is well within reach. for the final 15% on the left, I turn around on my seat. This allows me access to what is a 'mini kit' shaped for a left handed setup. There's still access to a range of pedals too in this position. The video for my piece 'Riobuggin' shows me sitting to the left. Thanks for the comment and yes, it's a sick kit!

This is a great technique and will help advance your playing. It can be difficult learning all the finer points and intricacies. I'd suggest looking for an experience teacher (online or in-person) that is familiar with the techniques and they can help guide you. When learning this, direct feedback is vital in refining the muscle and arm movements, along with the grip/s. Thanks, Grant

The method used by drum corps to build strength, control, and speed with rudiments is rudimental breakdowns. Just like singles or doubles may be focused on by one hand, we can do the same with rudiments. Practicing this way, with a metronome, from slow tempos to fast allows for easy analysis to detect errors in playing as well as a good workout. It's generally easy find plenty of these exercises for individual rudiments free online. Alternatively, Bill Bachman wrote a book called "Rudimental Logic" that chronicles all the PAS rudiments, plus a few common in drum corp.
