These days it's easy enough to soften butter in a microwave for baking using a low power setting. That's probably why they don't make the butter softener anymore. Most of the time I try to remember to bring the butter out ahead of time.

Hi Kevin, My wife watched this video and immediately decided to try it. It had a great flavor, but the inside of the biscuit seemed spongy, even though testing it's doneness proved to be cooked through. She used all the right ingredients. Any suggestions?

I still have that Sears model and we still use it. Bought it new sometime in the 70's. It's made in the USA. They don't make them like this anymore, they're all made in China. UGH!!

I have heard that if you add an ice cube or two near the end of mixing you will have the fluffy texture that some adore! I really love to eat hummus with carrot and celery sticks, sauteed crispy meatballs and garlic parsley butter naan. I love watching your films and seeing all your really cool stuff. Yes I grew up cooking and am still having fun cooking from scratch. Do you ever reach out to see if anyone knows how to make something that your not sure of?

What vintage blender would be best to make modern smoothies? I have an all plastic modern blender made by Hamilton Beach and it has a plastic carafe with a spout to dispense. It is flimsy and has three speeds so I'd like to find a vintage equivalent. I know they probably don't have a vintage one with a spout but I like the durability of the old stuff but which one would be most capable?
@cavalcadeoffood
@cavalcadeoffood Күн бұрын
Hi Chad - you need a blender with a powerful motor to make a good smoothie. I think you'll find many of the vintage blenders - like Oster, Hamilton Beach and Waring will work well. Thanks!

I was thinking the final building would be the Hudson building as they merged with Nash to create American Motors. At least there were a few Hudson's in it but I expected more. Was Mrs. Hudson's first name Jennifer? 😉 Love the old 60s Chrysler's. I've not so secretly wanted one forever. Maybe someday. Thanks for this series, I thoroughly enjoyed each segment.

My mom had a Chryselor New Yorker in the 60s - don't know what year.... I know that it was totaled in 1971... Push button gears to the left of the steering wheel & an 8 cyclinder At 36:11 You have a Hudson that if it followed the Dodge coloring charts would be known as Fawn.. The only BRAND NEW straight off the show room car we had (bought in 1959) was a Fawn colored Dodge Seneca that didn't know how to "dodge"... Was in the shop more than on the street & was always parked when hit. Was totaled by a drunk driver that hit it hard enough to plow it into my dad's work truck & do damage there as well. Drunk uninjuried, his girl friend had several years of surgeries & facial reconstruction.... My dad had to find a ride to work & we had a loaner car for about a month before we got the New Yorker.

Hi Amelia - what a story! Thanks for telling me about the color name Fawn - I didn't know that! Chryslers had pushbutton transmissions until 1964, so you mom's New Yorker must have been early 60's. Thanks!

Excellent series, very interesting! Only one correction... MG actually stood for Memphis Group. Look forward to seeing you back in the kitchen studio.

A very nice series indeed. A bit about that Yugo GVC. It's indeed based on a Fiat. Did a deep dive on these years ago and wanted one back in the day. If I were to find one, it'd be the 1990-91 fuel injected variants, which would be the last of them sold here. The 127/128. The car is actually based in the 127 hatchback body, also sold as the 127P (Polski). The 127 was sold under license from Fiat in the eastern bloc countries. Zastava, the maker of the Yugo sold it in the former Yugoslavia and when Malcom Brickland imported them to the US, they utilized the drive train of the 128, so they came here with the 1.1L and 1.3L Fiat engines and the front suspension from the 128. That is, the McPherson Strut suspension, disc brakes, transaxle, transverse mounted engine drive train, which was a first for Fiat, and the automotive industry as a whole for all modern FWD vehicles when introduced in 1969. Loved the Chevy Sprint turbo and likely from 1987/88 with flush headlights. Always love cars like it.

Hi John - I couldn't remember the last time I saw a Yugo until running across the one in Terry's collection. Here in Detroit, the Yugo (and LeCar) were the butt of many jokes, but they also seemed to have reliability and quality issues. Thanks!

@@cavalcadeoffood oh totally aware of all that. My thinking is that cars like these were thought of as disposable, and treated as such, meaning, lacking maintenance was done with many of them. Even now, the Fiat 500 is thought to be one as well and thus, often get treated as such. But I've also heard they when kept up and maintained, weren't all that bad. With the very rare one occasionally seen, they don't exist much out here in the west either. Saw a late one from around 1990-91 in Seattle back in 2014-15 and got a photo of it too.

My dad, were he still alive, would tell you that green 1960 Dodge Dart sofa was the best use of that car. He bought one new and hated it. It had the Slant Six and he said that car was too big for such a small engine. The only car he ever traded in when it was only four years old. He bought a 1964 Dart with the same engine and it was great and lasted about 19 years. Mr. Pickett, my assistant principal in junior high, had a pink Lark like the one you showed. We don't have oddly unique city names here like Hamtramck and Ypsilanti. Thanks for the tour.
@cavalcadeoffood
@cavalcadeoffood 5 күн бұрын
Hi Jonathan - Chrysler offered those slant six engines in many of the Plymouth and Dodge models as a way to offer a lower priced version and help with gas milage averages for the car lines, but that engine certainly left those cars terribly underpowered. The slant six was better appreciated later when it could provide decent performance and economy in cars like the downsized Dart, Valiant, Duster, etc. Thanks!

It’s amazing collection and he has so many cars that never made it through their break-in period, before you could even take them up to 60 miles an hour. I just remember as a kid my mom being nervous about driving her new car at high speeds until it had gone through its break-in period.
@cavalcadeoffood
@cavalcadeoffood 5 күн бұрын
Hi John - yes some of these are really low milage examples. You don't hear much about break-in periods anymore, but I still think it's not a great idea to try and push a new engine to its maximums right away. Thanks!

I never knew that electric skillets were made in stainless steel back in the day until watching your video. I grew up frying chicken and making goulash in mom's square aluminum electric skillet. The aluminum was a little too reactive for my taste, so I never bothered looking into an electric skillet for my cooking needs. Thanks for doing this video Kevin! I was able to decide which vintage electric skillet I was to going to purchase...and it was the best money I ever spent. It makes the best saurkraut and chops, pot roast,, Swiss steak, and who knew...you pull out the plug and toss it in the dishwasher! All those childhood hours wasted on scrubbing mom's skillet in the sink 😅😂😢😮😊, I never knew and they never told me.
@cavalcadeoffood
@cavalcadeoffood 5 күн бұрын
Hi ceeroberts - stainless steel was an option in many appliances but it always was a higher cost than the aluminum models. There were a few manufacturers who made coffee pots in stainless steel, and while they were more expensive they didn't give any off-flavor to the coffee. Glad you enjoy your vintage skillet - these are wonderful for so many things! Thanks!

Hi Kevin, I tried the Mexican Wedding Cake Recipe the other day and I have to say it was absolutely delicious. I was surprised that it wasn’t overly sweet given the amount of sugar in the recipe. I’d like to try a version of the cake next time with pecans in place of the walnuts. Oh I came across a recipe the other day that called for a level tablespoon of water. I’m actively hunting for a recipe that calls for a heaping tablespoonful of water. 😊
