You do know the it's very common for the coolant reservoir on the e46 to have teenie tiny cracks over time which leads to liquid loss don't you?

Just a heads up, if your using water to top it off, thats fine. But just know that Antifreeze contains anticoorosives and also provides lubrication to the waterpump. Distilled water by itself is partially corrosive to metal, as it acts like a magnet and leaches ions out of certain metals.
