I’m a certified teacher. Hate subbing. Kids immediately disregard you and the class when they realize their teacher isn’t there. You’re being tested by kids all day and even teachers! Both groups try to bully you in some way. I didn’t set up the room myself so I usually hate it!! I don’t know where anything is and it feels very dysfunctional. Teachers leave crappy plans, tech plans, or give stupid info but not what you really need. This is probably because I’m a teacher but it sucks honestly. I do it for extra cash when I have time off from my main job. The pay is also horrendous for what I’m expected to do, $20 a day where I am.
@MrBons1Million29 күн бұрын
Wow, that's crazy! $20 a day? That sounds illegal. And everything you just describe is absolutely correct. Nobody respects you as a sub. But I feel that you are caring too much as a teacher yourself. My only job there is to keep the students in class for the period. I don't care if they don't do any work. If you just care less, your job would be a lot easier, but I wouldn't do it for $20 a day. You took the time to plan & edit this video & didn't find your content inappropriate at all? Did you ever pause and think about what kind of message you were sending? I agree with many people here that this video was insulting. You're supposedly an educated person & you're basically saying you're lazy & not putting in the work (and worse letting everyone know). This isn't professional & I don't think parents, teachers, etc. would be happy to know this is how you view & treat your job. Many districts would frown upon this sort of thing. Some even have policies about not using your phone when inappropriate to & to be careful about what you say about your district etc. You're also not transparent in that this only relates to your choice of working at high schools & that how they operate makes it for an easy day for you. This video isn't a good review of what it's like to substitute teach in a general sense. Your specific experiences are very limited & you're just seeking something easy instead of something that will be rewarding, and challenging for you to help you grow and learn from a variety of experiences. You aren't in this for the right reasons if you're only seeking out good pay for little work.
@MrBons1MillionАй бұрын
Wow, you are so pessimistic. Are you a teacher or another sub? But let me clarify some of your points. 1. I did say that this is high school only. Lower grades require a lot more work. 2. In terms of transparency, Believe it or not, this is what most subs do. As for if it is appropriate, yes it is. Despite the 5-8 commenters who point out what you said, I've had just as many people commenting about being a sub. There is a shortage of teachers and subs so do you think that people would consider it if I said that being a sub is hard and rewarding? I've had more success getting sub applications with this video than people saying that it is rewarding. Also, this video is for people who are struggling either financially or are trying to find themselves. There are people out there who just need some time off to think about their next job and being a sub is a good transition for them to do that. If you find this video insulting then you probably put a lot of work into being a sub, but this video was never meant for you. It was meant to get more subs to help schools and to give struggling people options for extra income.

You are not doing the job properly if this is a typical day. Try actually teaching and do laps of the class to check they all understand and are on task. Sort out conflicts and problems. Give feedback to the teacher and prepare for the next lesson ahead of time. Check rolls, the school email and messages. And do make sure the room is tidy at the end. This is misrepresented and of course there will be no sick or holiday pay. ☑️
@MrBons1MillionАй бұрын
I agree with doing laps and giving feedback, but most subs do not teach. How would they teach a foreign language or physics? Teaching is expected in elementary and middle school, but not in high school. As for preparing for the lesson, it does not take that long if you don't teach. I don't think I'm misrepresenting it.

@MrBons1MillionАй бұрын
It's common in America to pay 30-50% of your income for rent. What makes it expensive is not the house, but the area. We are paying for safety and the city life. Even if we had a down payment for the house, we would still have a hard time paying the mortgage, taxes and maintenance that comes with owning a house. Honestly, if we want to buy a house, we need to move to another state. Thanks for commenting.

@MrBons1Million2 ай бұрын
I can't give you a straight answer cus I don't know your situation, but I will say that unless you are good with excel or math, it will be hard to change the spreadsheet to your situation. Have you considered a Reverse Mortgage? Usually, if you have a house paid off, it is cheaper than renting. If you need the money that is a separate conversation. Good luck
@jeanvaljean-gn5ej2 ай бұрын
The whole reasoning is flawed because while a bank will lend you money to buy a house, they won't lend you money to put into an index fund, because they don't have a collateral to cease easily if you don't pay back. One of the primary reasons buying a house is worth it is because of that leverage effect
@MrBons1Million2 ай бұрын
Yes, that leverage effect is a big reason why people buy a house. However, I don't think that the reasoning is flawed. I'm saying that if you invest the money that you put in the house, you would have almost the same amount over 30 years. The leverage effect is offset by the higher rate of return in the index fund and the interest you have to pay back interest for the loan. My thinking is that if your investment is the same as your house after 30 years, then that is a fair comparison. Of course you have to account for capital gains tax and other things.
@JesusisGod-pj8wo2 ай бұрын
you don't borrow to invest. what you invest will be the upfront cash to purchase a house. for renting case no lender involve. you are an investor while renting.
@MrBons1Million2 ай бұрын
I know you don't borrow to invest, but what is the point of having leverage with a house if you can get the same amount of money by investing? After 30 years you would have a house worth $1.7 million dollars or an investment portfolio worth $1.7 million. It seems the same to me.
@JesusisGod-pj8wo2 ай бұрын

Great video :D thank you for taking the time to do it. I have some observations I'd like to share :D The cost of property taxes and insurance appreciate proportionally to the value of the house which is 5% not the inflation rate in your example. Just this is enough of a deal breaker for me. But then the example assumes that you will acquire new furniture once at the beginning and keep the same furniture for 30 years. The maintenance estimates are very conservative. In the example the total budget for maintenance over 30 years is 18,765$. What if you have children and need to repurpose a room, or want to spend on improvements like adding a pool, remodeling your kitchen, renovating anything? 30 years is a long time, look at your spending habits today and tell me seriously that you won't bust your 24k budget (initial furniture + maintenance) in 30 years. Lastly, the example accounts for the monetary cost of maintenance but does not account for the time cost of maintaining the house which is a third deal breaker IMO For the rent side, I guess we must be looking at different sources, I've found sources saying the average return of the s&p is 9% or more, your 7% estimate is pretty conservative Anyway thanks again for the video :)
@MrBons1Million2 ай бұрын
Thanks for your insight Daniel! And I agree with everything you pointed out. Here's some clarification. 1. I didn't know that tax and insurance was 5% increase a year. Thanks for that. 2. My maintenance cost in the example was $416/month. Which is $5000/year or $150,000. If you add in remodeling and just new furniture, $150k definitely won't cut it for 30 years. 3. The cost of time for maintenance is also a deal breaker for me too. But I didn't know how to quantify that. 4. Yes, s&p is about 9%, it's 7% after inflation. I also wanted to be more conservative on that so people don't cus me out on the comments. Thanks for your insights. I really enjoyed reading it.

My experience in HS & Middle school were absolutely not just sitting at the desk. The kids are not even reasonable quiet which is all I ask. I can’t have the noise level so high it can be heard in the hallway. Also, they don’t want to stay in their seats. I’ve had boys who insisted on “sparring” during class & refused to sit down. Many kids are mean bullies who are quite intimidating. Some are bigger than me which is extremely intimidating. Aside from the terrible pay (depending on where you live) the only benefit is the schedule. It helps that I am already married.

Aww sorry for your rough experience. I do admit I am fortunate enough to have the option of picking good schools and avoiding bad ones. At least it works with your schedule 😁

Make this more clear on your station, you are doing a disservice to hardworking relief teachers. 🤞
