Oh God I wish I could take this tunnel. I've been forced to become a commuter cyclist again after my car broke down for good. I've been at this for 2 weeks. I am not at Boss Road Cyclist physical level yet. I live on the north side and work on the south side. I pedal as fast as I can. Going straight under would easily shave 30 minutes off my commute time. Not to mention needing to exert a lot less energy and pain. Why they haven't included a bike path in that tunnel is beyond me. What are people supposed to do if they're walking? Walk 2 miles hauling all of their stuff just to go around a .36 mile stretch? It makes absolutely no sense. It's backwards that only cars are privileged enough to go straight through. It would make more sense for the faster moving traffic that doesn't take physical energy to power to go around than the opposite. Besides, Sepulveda blvd. has been there far longer than LAX. This video makes me long for the early days of Covid when everyone stayed home, and only us "essential workers" had to be out. I had a car then. It would take me 10 minutes to get to work from my usual 20. If I'd been on a bike, it still would have taken me far less time, because I'd have a lot less death to contend with. The lack of cars was so, so nice. It was the most relaxed I've ever been driving in this city. I'd really, sincerely hoped that people learned a few lessons from this. A) the people they praised for putting ourselves at risk as being heroes should be the ones making more money - not desk jockeys and pencil pushers who's jobs everyone realized were pointless, and never really needed to begin with. ((Hint: we weren't given a raise in pay during or after. Just praised, told to never stop, and used. And everyone went back to treating us like disposable tools when lockdown was lifted. I never got my 2 month lockdown vacation. I'm still waiting for that)), and B) Less cars on the road made existence SO MUCH BETTER. Note: Humanity didn't learn a damn thing. Old people just went right back to their ways, because they hate change. I wish so much that we could have this breathing space back. The air was cleaner, too. It was incredible.

The term "Department of Motor Vehicles" was invented prior to combustion engine automobiles. So technically, it applies more to electric bicycles and the electric vehicles of the past. It is ironic that after 100 years or so that electric cars are finally making a comeback and the term will once again apply to cars instead of just bicycles.

It's not "fascinating" to me at all that there is no definition at the federal level of a bicycle. When I look at my state's vehicle code, it's incredibly lacking in detail for certain vehicle codes. When I see the California code written, it surprises me a 0/10. This reveals how little these people writing codes care or know about bicycles. Not all, but most. When I look at America, I see Carmerica, a nation ruled by, prioritizing and relying on cars in a number of ways. So I'm not surprised in the least bit there is no definition. I can get a car charging station but I still can't get bike racks at a number of locations where I live. It's not the 1800's anymore. This is not Japan. Where the f**k are the bike racks? We can have tentative plans to construct lanes that allow electric cars to charge a car but I have difficulty finding a bike rack.

I disagree, it should be at our own discretion...why does the government pass laws on stuff like this? What's next are 3 year olds going to need a licence for trikes? Just because you have the power to make a law doesn't mean your required to make laws regarding every tiny thing you can...I think American law has a real big problem with knowing when NOT to use they're power.

A bicycle is not considered a motor vehicle in NJ. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Code defines a bicycle as a vehicle with two wheels propelled solely by human power and having pedals, handle bars and a saddle-like seat. You can get drunken disorderly or public intoxication, et al. Electric bikes will ruin this of course, they're already plotting a new law, as of Nov 2022.

While I agree with all that you present for bicyclists, I have to disagree with your representation of drivers as "cars". Drivers are still responsible for their own actions, are they not? Or is the car responsible? It is common in news reporting of accidents involving a bicycle and a car that the bicyclist is referred to as such (i.e. a person) but the driver is referred to as a "car" thereby removing the blame from the driver and assigning it to a thing, or the bicyclist, because that is how perception works. Vehicle code has been written with its primary considerations being the characteristics of motor vehicles, so applying it universally to bicycles makes no sense. The piece of code I violate regularly is coming to a full stop at a Stop sign. I treat them all pretty much as Yield signs because it's more efficient and much safer to roll through a Stop sign when there is no opposing or crossing traffic (the "Idaho stop"). Stopping means clipping out and clipping back in, which is never without added risk. It also means I'm going to be in that intersection a lot longer because I'm entering from a standing start. And it increases the risk that I'll get rear-ended by a motorist who treats that Stop as a Yield, as most do.

Most of those 22 miles were on a separated bike path, but there was a small 2 mile portion that wasn’t where I felt like cars were going to kill me. I unlocked the speed to 28 mph before I rode it and doing that apparently causes it to be classified as a class 3 e-bike which means I’m not allowed to take it on bike paths, Oops. @@burgerman101 In general, I think we are a ways away from police checking for electric bicycle classes in a widespread manner, or even knowing what they are. I think some of them know, but probably currently only the ones who are bicycle friendly. (based on my conversations with police officers) For now, thankfully, I think these classes are off their radar. As you can guess, the police continue to get more safety benefits from controlling cars, but of course, not as many fight for bicycle rights so they tend to over-regulate bicycles and under-regulate car behaviors in proportion to damage and injuries caused.

Hello, and thank you for your concern. I hope this doesn't inflame you, but I can tell your comments come from a place of caring, but also ignorance. As a bicycle commuter, policy advisor, and social scientist, I can tell you several points that should assuage your concerns. First, in California, bicycles are not considered 'technically' a vehicle according to vehicle code. (you can see my bicycle law in all 50 states for more on that). But more importantly, these laws and the way it is designed actually increase safety and decrease the very thing you are concerned about. In fact, even the 'stop as yield' law that was recently vetoed by the governor 'for the children" was misguided and put them at greater risk according to all other states that have passed this vital law. Intersections are the key points at which danger occurs, but also, bicyclists NOT taking the lane is a major issue. Not only do the statistics bear this out, but every time I have been hit, it was when I was 'being courteous' and giving car drivers room to pass. In order to maintain maximum safety, you should take the entire lane. Car drivers do not like this, but it is the safest for everyone. Second, I have another video on license and registration, but this is a dangerous 'road' to go down. If we discourage the correct behaviors (riding a bicycle instead of taking cars everywhere) especially curbing these behaviors at a young age, we greatly increase many of societies issues including overuse of cars, contribution to oil wars and too many electric car batteries, damage to city roads, sitffling local business, the list goes on. The best thing we can do is to eliminate more cars, discourage their use, and increase the desire to take alternatives. Bicycling has been shown to be a net positive, even with injuries for health, and even psychological well being. Einstein even habitually rode his bicycle on the streets whenever he needed to come up with ideas as it even increases your beta waves for stimulated thinking. There are really too many arguments to make this a coherent comment :) but the short answer after all that is we should not stifle the usage of bicycles, but rather fix cars to be self-driving such that they recognize bicycles, and remove and restrict cars, not the other way around. To do it the other way is like fixing the bullied child at school (the bicycle), rather than controlling the bully. (the car) I hope somehow this helps. I realize I am just typing too much, but I would advise that you watch a few other targeted videos to learn more about why this statistically and even intuitively makes sense. Thank you again for your concern!

@ShermanSitter
@ShermanSitter 2 жыл бұрын
Good question! There are several reasons there are no registration laws for bicycles. (I think I actually have a video on this somewhere in my archives, which also covers insurance) Here are a few: For most governing bodies, a large portion of users are minors. Also, bicycles, though one can argue they equally contribute to collisions, they are often the victim rather than the perpetrator. Another reason, they save cities millions of dollars in infrastructure costs, and tend to support local business and are general beneficial to local economies, so there is little interest in regulation. Usually regulation is tied to pollution, road wear, and massive infrastructure costs that are necessary to accommodate heavier vehicles.
