Great job articulating the hypocrisy in her video and supporting your arguments! If the phrase "This kind of person needs to touch grass" does not exist as a classic colloquial form of verbal shaming, then I'd love to hear from Kris where she got her understanding of that phrase since, according to her, her video was not created to shame others and yet she used that phrase.

"I have a positive audience, so I'm not used to criticism." Um... your audience/followers/fans aren't holding you accountable, is what you're saying. They're so blind that they'll excuse your bad behavior. So of course she's upset when people outside of her group say hey, you're doing something wrong. She used to people having this strong parasocial relationship with her where they have to defend her.

I love books, I always have and I've read hundreds of books of all genres, I worked at a large bookstore for many years. I love browsing booktoc/bookstagram. I've seen Kallmekris' video and I wasn't offended at all- some of the recs on booktoc are not great, a bit vapid, shallow or poorly written and have toxic relationships without proper warnings. - I read a booktock reccomendation about a girl who had a romantic sexual relationship with a sentient door - yes 'sentient object romance' is a genre and a popular one that I've seen reccomended - it wasn't for me but I had a laugh and moved on- if it's your thing get that door girl. At the end of the day these books are an escape , some aren't for one person or another - Kris read a genre a popular and widely reccomended atm (romance/hockey romance) that's all over booktoc and she expressed her dislike- I read a popular hockey one and frankly hated it, it was predictable and childish but it's not a genre of romance I typically like. The issue i think revolves around is the ability to differentiate healthy relationships and boundaries vs a fantasy or indulgence we read for fun- I have met people who do take it a bit too seriously and idealize an unhealthy relationship theyve read in a book and perhaps need to take that break from the genre. Also chiming in as someone who has worked at a bookstore young girls are and do read smutty books i was one of them - they walk into the romance section and read them - as parents the covers are misleading they see a cartoon and assume it's fine without checking (which they should it's their responsibility or ask an employee), I read 50 shades of grey /game of thrones when I was like 14 and other romances that were far better written and more raunchy/toxic- no one questioned what I was buying and some of them did have racier covers. End of the day Kris didn't like it she thinks it's weird genre/book, I think religious romance is weird but love dragons, and dark romance, and high fantasy. We like what we like as long as you aren't hurting anyone you do you.

I read a lot of different genres and I do enjoy everything from a cheesy romance, to an epic fantasy story and also smut. But I didn't take any offense in Kris video. As a woman I didn't feel patronized or that she was misogynist in any way. She was poking fun in taking a few examples that stood out of her. And as it is in that type of video, she generalized a few things in an exaggerating way. Sure. But I don't get why people feel so offended now. I see a lot of "but what about..." in many of those reactions ("But what about in shows and movies?" - "But what about GoT?") but that's not really something that can be compared and shouldn't be compared. I also dislike a lot, that many reactions to this talk about "us women", as if guys wouldn't read that kind of books at all? Like. It's ok if someone dislikes something I like. And yeah, I can be a bit upset if they make fun of it. But this Drama stirring is just too much and doesn't do the BookTok scene any favor. I usually like your videos, Kyla. But you also seem a bit personally upset here, which doesn't sit right with me. I'm sorry you feel offended by Kris' opinions and the way she presented it. But I think your (and anybody elses) way of reacting to this is a bit over the top and maybe a bit too caught up in the heat of the moment. I'd have liked your video more if you had been more objective, like I actually expected when clicking on this video, because that's what you usually do xD Also, going on about how Kris should have tagged the people she used the clips of and saying she could have "at least" followed them because that would be "polite" was a bit much for me. It's ok if that's your opinion but the tone you delivered it with was a bit patronizing to me. Not implying that's what you wanted, but just saying how it came across. I think everybody should just chill out.

I totally agree. I think BookTok can be a really volatile place-it’s great to see people reading, but some of the books are just trash. Wasn’t there also a huge controversy about BookTok authors using real life hockey players for their books, and oversexualizing them, upsetting the player and their family? I think this community is just really big and any large group is prone to problematic behavior.

Thank you for watching and for sharing your thoughts! I wasn’t upset by what Kris said, at the end of the day she isn’t someone who I really watch otherwise so I wasn’t personally hurt or upset, but all of my videos are mostly me sharing my thoughts and opinions so that’s what this one was too! Just explaining the drama that went down, and what myself and many others thought about it! But good to know that it came off less objective, because I hadn’t realized that so it’s something I can keep in mind more in the future! Also I didn’t mean Kris should follow them - I don’t always follow people who are in my videos, I just meant she could have credited their content in her caption or on screen when she played their clips! Def wasn’t meant to seem patronizing but I totally get what you’re saying as well! And again thank you for all your insight!!

As a book lover, I have so many thoughts about this. Number one being: it’s 2025, why are we STILL judging people for what they read?! I’m so sick of hearing “oh you read romance, those aren’t real books”…like what? I genuinely don’t understand it. If you don’t want to read these books, then don’t! What you read or don’t read doesn’t affect me! Let people read what makes them happy, at least they are reading which is such a great hobby. Plus, this felt like more of an attack since she isn’t an avid reader herself. Nobody forced her to read these books. Okay rant over 😅 great video friend!! 🩵

10:08 this made me so mad because it isn’t the author/publisher’s fault for using cartoon covers and “marketing them for children”, where are the parents monitoring what their kids are reading?! Like that isn’t anyone else’s job. Clearly I’m very passionate about this 🤣🤣

@KylaJames 3 сағат бұрын
Agreed! I think ultimately if people are reading, that’s just awesome either way regardless of genre or anything! And totally, I think that’s why it felt so out of left field for me too - it’s not like she’s reviewed tons of books and these were just a few she didn’t like. It felt like she set out to find books she didn’t like so she could make a video with this tone!

As a librarian, writer, and book reviewer I make sure to think about what genre I’m reading when I’m dealing with a book. Even with genres I’m not familiar with. Yeah, there can still be things about the book I may not like but what Kris is saying is flippant and a bit unfair.

This is strange. I used to go to the library a lot and definitely read some books from horror and sci-fi that were far filthier than some romance. I also feel full body embarrassment reading these scenes, being a married adult woman in my 30s, so I know this isn't my genre. That said, I do enjoy romance books, not all of these are for me. I generally stick to the ones less graphic, which I kinda thought that's why we look to others thoughts on them.
@KylaJames

Agreed! I’ve read some horror books that even I was like waitttt this is wild lol. And that is so fair, taste is so subjective I bet a lot of the books I love others would hate, and vice versa there are books so many people love that just did nottt do it for me! I agree looking at reviews and other people’s thoughts can help narrow down what you may enjoy in a book (which is good because theyre so expensive these days 😅)

I’ve also been wondering if, in the months after the wedding, she and her girlfriends were reminiscing and going over videos - and ended up convincing each other that what actually happened was way terrible and they needed to call out the artist. When what actually happened wasn’t bad at all. (Only argument against that i guess is her comment at the time about not being able to wait to make a tik tok…so…there is that 😬). I just can’t help but see in my head them all sitting around going “yeah, remember that? We totally should call her out. It was awful. Should we? Yeah do it!” 🙄

I can totally imagine being too embarrassed to speak up when you realize you don't love what the artist is doing, not wanting to hurt their feelings or make them feel they wasted their time. But know what I can't imagine? Making a video blaming the artist. Unless they were heinously rude, I would just wash it off and take it as a lesson about learning to speak up for myself - the artist isn't a mindreader and if I didn't communicate that's on me. And _tagging_ them? Talking about how you can't wait to make a video about it? That's just mean girl behavior, imo.

Drew doesnt have a "W-2" job" because that would mean garnishments would actually come out of his check. They can't garnish a gig job like door dash. He should have a regular job and do the gig job for extra cash. In my state child support is based on the income of both parents as if the family has never dissolved ie my ex worked higher paying jobs than I and is responsible for 80% of the medical bills that aren't covered by insurance (that i carry on my kids). They add incomes together and deduct a standard ampunt and bare it on that and the number of children it is due to support. I had to garnish my ex's income because he wasn't paying as agreed and also stopped working often on purpose. He was threatened with jail or probation ans that has since changed. So a "W-2 job" is not wanted because he would actually have to pay for the other child and doesn't want to do that obviously if he did he would have a normal "W-2 job" to support them. Also i geel like he's owed money from this account so that till should be considered in his income towards child support. I heard that he was grimy about how he got the son he has in his care (on TT from an ex of course who also said she was pregnant by him but decided she couldn't have the child because she just had one and they weren't financially able).
