I've got Case knives from the 70's and up. Even the 70's knives aren't GEC quality on the finish. They're better than the modern models, but Case has never really made GEC quality knives and the prices reflect that. With GEC and now China pumping out very high quality knives, Case does need to step it up.

Cactus Jigged Bone is a perfect name. Is one Angry Kid Food safe? I use most of my Traditional knives in the kitchen for food prep. I was thinking about using Food grade Mineral oil on all my knives but some people question its toxicity. Also Have you ever used Alcohol based Leather dye like Fiebing's Their British Tan seems to be a very close match to the brown in R.R. Cinnamon Stag Bone series. I use Fiebing's to stain wood often as well as Bingo Markers which are water base. Bingo Markers might also work well on Bone Knife scales with out having to heat the dye up first. Any way, Thank you for showing your process. Glad I subscribed.

Ok, I just stopped the video and tried this several times with my Rough Ryder Bow Trapper and it did not work. There is a bit of play in the main blade in half stop position. Can there be a different issue and maybe a different fix to the blade centering issue?
@JohnKlahr
@JohnKlahr 7 күн бұрын
@@flitdek yes, I wish I had gone into more detail but wanted to make it short, 1) if the hole is not drilled perpendicular to both sides of frame=in this scenario you should see a flaw in the bolster as the pin would show a gap on one side. 2) Hole is not drilled perpendicular in blade itself. This would result in noticeable gap on both sides of blade between blade and liners but opposite from one side of blade to the other. Both of the above scenarios unfortunately can’t be repaired without drilling out a larger pin hole and inserting a larger pin. The more common issue , with the fix I recommended is that there is a burr on one side of the blade from where it was punched out from a solid sheet of steel. The fixed I described works on Case knives with brass liners but with steel liners not so great. And if not done early enough the knife will wear away at the liners itself and make it harder if not impossible to center once it wore itself in crooked.
@flitdek
@flitdek 7 күн бұрын
@@JohnKlahr Thank you for responding. The pin seems fine, no noticeable gapping. Maybe the hole in the tang is a touch off. Many Rough Ryders have this issue. They make some beautiful knives. I just wish they would fix this issue with their build. Small gap in the spring I can tolerate but blade centering issues jus make me feel bad about mu purchase, and make me question buying Rough Ryder. Thanks again.

Thanks for sharing the outcome of your research. And the tour… My wife and I have been retired eight years now .. Watched a lot of cheap RV, living videos .. hundreds of those and others. So far, we keep borrowing an old REI tent that we ‘ gave ‘ to our youngest daughter(because we’re gonna have an RV)… just can’t seem to settle on one. ,, we need something that’s just basic and small. For weekend outings to Bluegrass get togethers .. something that can support a couple good size awnings. Basic necessities… ( Shower and toilet). Will probably still be looking 20 years from now lol . Keep up the great work on your channel. I sure enjoy watching.

I love the SAK Tinkler. I bought a bunch of them with Smoky Mountain knife Works has sale something like 4 or five years ago. ( maybe more because I’ve slept since then.) I know I’m late to the party … but the unique word Tinkler got me ha ha .. just doing a little recuperating after total knee… getting caught up on a lot of old videos.. keep up the good work, John. Oh cool thing about those Swiss Army knives you can swap handles easy… so there’s an aftermarket for that… but like I live here in Georgia lots of bulldog fans.. so with buying an equal amount of black and red knives I bought ;swapped Half of their handles to make some unique bulldog knives. Black and red colors… hey I’m a simple guy. I do simple projects…. But I try to do those projects well . I was known as Mr. clean at work ( elevator service tech / mechanic) My machine rooms were show places. Even if I did service call on another guys job I would clean the area. I was working at , like a car top door operator … n routine it . Instead of hurry up n hit the coffee shop. My personal cars ( wife’s n chevy regular cab short beds that daughters used h/s and college ) were always looking good ….always waxed .( cheap price for them to use it)… Simple guy simple jobs.. great reward. Love great tools like the tinkler. Years ago, I helped a son-in-law when I first retired , With restoring his great grandfathers, gardening tools, and some hand tools… Great experience for both of us. The use of a ‘tool’ doing something positive … with your hands … ( I hesitate to say mind also… I seem to go on auto pilot when I start working with my hands… it almost becomes like breathing.. Second nature-automatic). So I like planting seeds by giving knives .. and like I said, the tinkers were good one! And if I have a chance to give a second knife, I have a drawer full of Becker Escabars. N others. Three son in laws got / get Tools like floor jacks and Good two wheel wheelbarrels for birthdays, and Christmas. I guess they know I’m trying to tell them:’ get to work.’ Ha ha . No they are good guys. Ok 2 cups of coffee is one cup too many for me.. if you read this far thanks for putting up with my rambling.

Hey John just got me a full size sod buster in SS. I have had a yellow synthetic sod buster Jr in CV for many years and even though it had unevenly ground scales right out the box I have been very happy with it. But this new one, how has it disappointed, let me count the ways. Light scratches on the back spring and scales, a blade spine so sharp I had to round it with a ceramic rod just to use it, an overly ground tip that created a chisel point, an tang that is stone washed on one side and has grind lines on the other, and yes unevenly ground scales. What are they drinking up in Bradford PA. I don't think I am buying another Case unless I can hold it in my hand before purchase. Corporate greed strikes again, what a shame.
