Why should you be denied euthanasia because you refused a recommended treatment? A lot of the treatments have awful side effects and are hard to live with. If you've tried all the other meds in that class why would you try another med in that class. I would never agree to ECT which can have terrible side effects which can be permanent. I don't think you ought to be denied over that.

Bisggest problem is that you can get everyhting set up and then the patient wants to abandon it all and wants help to start over somewhere else, no longer will take medication and is hostile to even the closest family members who are willing to help- the area of trouble is the Law protects them from having to receive treatment but expects you to help them; and take care of them - It's and OXYMORON approach Make the Law so family can help and not just guardianship- that is overridden by the other laws. Long story but why should we have to fight to take care of family who if are chronically proven to have the illness = we get interference by nonsensical laws
@markkomrad66544 жыл бұрын
Actually there is no law that a family MUST take care of an ADULT with mental illness in any U.S. jurisdiction I am aware of--unless that family is formally given guardianship over the disabled family member (which is pretty rare). Some of the techniques in my book (YouNeedHelpBook.com) in Chapter 8 about "therapeutic coercion" give ideas about how the privileges of family membership can be deployed to steer people into treatment, utilizing the inherent, often incompletely tapped, power of families. The following chapter is about how to optimally use the law that mobilizes power beyond family---laws about involuntary commitment that invoke authorities such as the police, courts, ER's and civil commitment hearings.

Why is no one on either side of the euthanasia debate addressing the issue of suffering that could be prevented by providing better support for patients who are exhausted from the burden of excessive "self care" expectations and challenges of daily living for which they have insufficient resources (physical, emotional, cognitive or other circumstantial demands exceeding capacity)?The speaker mentions the dangers of over emphasizing autonomy re: euthanasia yet health professionals (especially mental health providers) routinely impose expectations of greater autonomy on over burdened ,burned out (& often isolated) patients and families through cruel accusations and criticism that patients are behaving irresponsibly or being unreasonably demanding if they ask for more support such as respite care ,extended recovery/rehabilitation care , or assistance with daily tasks that expend energy patients need to reserve for recovery specific activities like physical, occupational, and other therapies, rest and engagement in social, emotional and cognitively stimulating activities etc.

Please watch this video to the end, it is long, but perhaps the most helpful resource available. Covid-19 has escalated the urgency of much needed support of our loved ones struggling with mental health issues. Friends play a vital role in the wellness of those we love and care for. Many have lost their jobs, health benefits, which eliminates therapy options and perhaps much needed medication... and has forced isolation. This video has given me the help I need to support and understand a loved friend from slipping into that dark place and knowing they are deserving of love and are not alone... I feel very inadequate and mess up all of the time as I am dealing with anger which is not pleasant but as my brothers keeper, not an enabler, I can not abandon my friend in a time of extreme need... in a few days I will try again because it is hard now and we both need a little break... that is love, all I can do, but I have not reacted and understand this storm we are in is not intentional...Thank you for posting this, you have really helped me help my friend.

In my opinion worrying about what people are doing in Europe when there is so much needed help here with our dreadful Medicaid health system in the United States. most people who have mental illness end up losing their job and can't afford anything else but Medicaid. You can't even find a psychiatrist you have to go to a clinic and see a nurse practitioner they have bad attitudes and hate their job. We need to stop worrying about what everyone else in the world is doing and start worrying about our own people. Suicides in this country are higher than ever double then what they were in the 70s and 80s. It's pretty hard to convince a loved one to get help when nobody wants to help them. These clinics are overcrowded old dreary with a nurse practitioner thinking she's God . Even if you do end up going there you walk out without help in the 1st place especially if you have resistant treatment depression. Step one is to fix the health care system. If that can't happen I think we have a right to be euthanized what other choice do we have? That's why drug addiction is rampant and everyones overdosing . It's because they are self medicating and why is that? You can't find decent mental health care in this country. The people who can afford it really don't need it because if they did have a serious mental health condition they wouldn't be working and couldn't afford good insurance and the people who need it most aren't getting the help they need so they self Medicate.

@@markkomrad6654 I'm sure a lot of people in this country desperately want to get help. But here's the problem Medicaid insurance is terrible you can't find a psychiatrist you can't get medication. Mental health clinics with a nurse practitioner is what you get. They don't care about you thIER really sick and tired of listening to people whining all day. They don't know whether you're making up your illness to get meds or if you're really really truly sick. ThIER just very untrusting and instead of thinking better safe than sorry Thier Ego prevents them from helping people theY ARE so afraid to get duped. It's really sad how they think everyone is trying to get high. It's just a miserable humiliating situation for people who have severe depression ADHD crippling anxiety. And regular SSRI's SNRI don't do anything to help treatment resistant depression. For these people being severely depressed is embarrassing enough BUT walking into those mental health clinics it's just the most degrading they have bad attitudes and truly just don't care you walk out feeling way worse. You're scared to ask for what you need for fear the little bit that they give you will be taken away from yoU. I bet a huge number of suicides happen because of the bad attitudes of nurse practitioners trying to be psychiatrist.. It's just no way to live there's no quality of life especially when you can't get any real help and are made to feel like a lazy liar drug seeking scoundrel. It's just hopeless the health system here is hopeless for people making under 20,000 a year they don't care whether you live or die that's for sure. BUT when there is a suicide everybody's crying and carrying on like they gave a crap when in reality it takes somebody literally dying before they do give a crap and by that time it's just too late. But it's a cycle a new person comes along and they do this same exact thing I think that most people not all but most are very fake and pretend like they care when on TV iF everybody sees them doing a great act OR getting some kind of recognition in reality BEHIND CLOSED CLINIC DOORS THEY care less if you live or die so so so sad but true. Unfortunately 90% of people don't have true love or compassion it's just getting harder and harder to want to be alive in this negative fake cold environment . IF THE United States had better mental health care and kinder more compassionate doctors people wOULD NOT be hanging themselves with belts from door knobs. Famous actresses actors models doctors lawyers are committing suicide everyday in this country I really don't think the average normal peRSON haS any chance at all if they have a debilitating mental illness like ADHD severe depression anxiety bipolar they just don't stand a chance I think people should have the right to be euthanized if nobody is willing to help them get better isn't it better then people suffering and nobody caring about them I mean seriously is it more ethical?
@markkomrad66545 жыл бұрын
traci germanozashvili first of all, I’m sorry that you’ve had such a negative experience. Like any profession, some places are better than others. I certainly know a number of public mental health clinics that I would send my own family to, and give very good care. But there are many who don’t. One might see the same range of quality in private offices of doctors as well. That being said, there are a lot of places that could do a lot better. I think that the policies and laws that treat nurse practitioners as equivalent to physicians and give them equivalent responsibilities are profoundly misguided. Psychiatrists have 15,000 hours of training, compared to 500 hours for nurse practitioners, many of whom get their NP degree online plus a few months clinical training, shadowing a psychiatrist.
@markkomrad66545 жыл бұрын
traci germanozashvili Also, as someone who works “behind the doors” in Mental Health, I will tell you that there is a tremendous devotion of all varieties of mental health practitioners towards their patients in their work. We too suffer from inadequate resources, STIGMA, lack of parity of the mental health system, etc. Some of the most idealistic people, driven by a passion for social justice and care, go into the mental health professions. This is the lowest compensated sector of the healthcare community. These Doctors, nurses, and therapists, could be much better paid if they chose other specialties. But they didn’t. They chose to go into mental health care because of their devotion. I can’t speak for everyone, but the generalizations that you make about mental health care professionals, are the very opposite of the generalizations that I think are true about this sector of the healthcare community.

I actually didn’t know that she finally went through with her euthanasia. The video was updated and I wasn’t aware. Nobody thought to rewatch the original video to see if it was updated with an new epilogue! So thank you. . It is still poignant that being in this documentary may well have motivated her to live another couple of years. Unfortunate that she couldn’t sustain that momentum. A very tragic outcome.

@@markkomrad6654 what's even more tragic is the crappy disgusting health care system we have in this country called Medicaid people who really really want to get help can't they get sent to some nurse practitioner instead of a real psychiatrist,,,,,,,,,,, opiate addiction because everyone is self medicating because they can't find a doctor to help them. Medicaid only pays doctors$5 a visit LOL. THIS is tragic at least the doctors in Belgium haVE the heart to euthanize these people, Americans treat their dogs better then their own people. IF dog is sick we take them to the doctor and IF IT can't get better we put him to sleep. Millions of people in this country can't even find a doctor they suffer in silence. I think the American health system is way more tragic and you canT blame the doctors for turning Medicaid patients away they all say it's not worth the $5 we get per visit at least everyone in those countries get this same health care and treatment unlike here if you're sick and can't work forget about getting any kind of QUALITY mental health treatment I think instead of worrying about Belgium we should be wearing about our own people

Finally we have told him if he doesn't start seeking help , he can no longer live in the house . Finally agreed to see an independent psychologist only to change his mind last minute. He ended up going however, after we reminded him he cant stay in the home. But he has stopped taking his Abilify all together for about a month now and only taking Effexor. He's been very inconsistent since January, with him 70% of the tine off his meds . I am more often wanting to give up . But I'm trying to stay positive 😲 I wish there was a magic button to push😭😭😭 I have tried to not get depressed from this ..

Using television shows / Hollywood stories as examples is completely unhelpful and not real world. Real world is quite the opposite - truth is there is very little help for families struggling to help a loved one with severe mental illness. Practitioners do not want to deal with difficult patients, drug them and get them out ASAP is the standard MO - maybe the very wealthy have more hope - but for the rest of us, since the Reagan administration shut down funding for state mental institutions, there is no where your loved one can stay for the amount of time needed to make any real progress. They are instead churned through the emergency and/or low care level system, often making their condition worse.
@tracigermano5 жыл бұрын
SO VERY TRUE! I think most people nowadays are very open minded about mental health I think the real problem is exactly like you said you're sick family member is probably out of work which means thIER on Medicaid which means it is impossible to find a psychiatrist in a private practice or even a clinic willing to help! Everywhere I live and trust me I tried and tried to find a doctor a great psychiatrist but Unfortunately it's impossible to even find a decent family physician. We only get tO see nurse practitioners where I live doctors want nothing to do with Medicaid and I don't blame them they only make like $5 a visit LOL that's all the government is willing to pay so we get nurses instead of doctors such a tragedy and so sad that's exactly why drug addiction self medication is an epidemic it's because people can't find decent health care! That is why overdoses in suicide is OUT of control in this country!

RV Beginner Winnebago Adventurer '97 there are no such laws in the US that I am aware of, which mandate medical treatment as a precondition of social benefits for the poor-either financial or medical benefits. On the other hand, to get Social Security Disability (SSDI), you must have documentation from a treating physician to see if you qualify. And follow up reports every few years to see if you still qualify. However SSDI is not limited to the poor, it’s for anyone, no matter their income, if they have paid into the Social Security system by having withholdings from their paycheck for at least 5 quarters of work. SSDI benefits end at age 65.
