Hey hi, i'm trying to make sense of how stories works but i have some problems and after watching this video and see how easy and articulate you are i would really like for you to help me .. (note: i'm french, please forgive my terrible english) I have 4 questions: - What is the difference between an event and an action ? Events and actions are they both the same thing ? Cause the way i see them is: Event = Everything that happen in the story Action = What characters are doing ! For example: - Two idiots trying to start a fire in a forest is both, an action (because characters are performing the action) and an event (because it is something that happen in the story) - Now if rain start falling and stop the fire, this time is just an event (something that happen that didn't need a character to perform it) - And finally if the cops shows up, again it is both the action of the cops, and the event which is what happen in the story: the cops showing up Is my understanding of events and actions correct ? - What is a scene ? When watching for definitions all i get is: A scene is a unit of story comprise of one event ! But i have a hard time of understanding that definition since everything that happen in a story is a event how could a scene only have " ONE EVENT " ? For example how many scene would that be: - Getting into the castle - Looking for and finding the artefact - Steal it - Getting out of the castle Would it be: Example 1: 4 separate scenes - Entering the castle: a guard who is not supposed to be making the rounds at the moment spots them. They need to find a way to subdue the guard before he alerts others or they will have to face the consequences. - Finding the artifact: they get lost because the castle layout is not like the plan they had or they bump into castle residents who strike up a conversation. They improv, making the resident suspicious until they find their way out of the situation - Stealing the artifact: the location of the artifact is full of booby traps they must get past - Exit of the castle: it is impossible to exit the way they entered because the gate has been raised while they were inside. They must find a new exit before the change of the guards. - Example 2: one scene The obstacle occurs only during the stealing of the artifact. Entry and exit into the castle is fairly smooth sailing ? - Should a scene ALWAYS have conflict - What is the difference between plot and structure

Hi Tara. Please never think you aren't reaching people if KZbin progress is slow. It's 2024 and I'm only now finding this video, and it is tremendously helpful to me, so thank you so much! 💕

This is a great video. Thank you. My biggest source of paralysis comes from consuming KZbin videos on literary editing. Too much voice, not enough voice, similes, too much telling, unconscious shifts in point of view, too many adjectives and adverbs, repeating a character’s name in dialogue - I could go on. I feel as if I can’t write a damn word without violating some rule. Oh, excuse me. “Damn” is an adjective. 😢

My original structure was like this, about 30 chapters or 4-5 arcs, but has evolved a bit into 6 arcs-38 chapters and follows the 3 act story structure. Expansion by leeway of the content. Lemme know how yours goes! Working on the first draft!

You seem to be a bit fixated on adult men being creepy. When did I become a creepy, unsavory being? What age exactly? 40? 50? 60? Your creepy old man is someone's beloved grandfather. There was a day when one might even be considered wise in their senior years. Someday you'll see just how full of sh!t you were when you were young. I did. With age.

Watch some videos about delivery of a single message. Then watch some videos about how quickly and easily people change their minds. Then watch some videos about why general people hate hearing about limited-time offers. With the last one, pay special attention to the angry responses to telemarketers. After that, you should understand why I couldn't stand to listen to your 26 minutes of you selling yourself to me ineffectively. Good day.
@kylekirkparick4265 жыл бұрын
I liked the stick-figures, and the type of perspectives that you were drawing. Pun not intended. But you're trying too hard to sell me something. It wont be there forever, check it out now before it's gone, don't miss what is fleeting because I'm only being helping for a short time. Girl, stop. I like your voice, your animation in the beginning, and your boot to butt kind of encouragement. I hate every single instance where you mention the time in which I should take action though. Stop forcing me, let me simply absorb your video, and don't tell me how quickly I should act. You're a telemarketer with a scam, and the scam is that you have a video over 26 mins with an emphasis on time. I only watched 6 of those minutes, and felt like I answered the phone, only to have a mechanical voice tell me what to do and how soon to do it. Sorry love, I don't like that. I don't do thumbs down, but unless you magically draw me back in... I wont ever watch one of your videos again.

Scene number 1: Chase your POV up a tree and start pounding the POV with a sledgehammer. Scenes 2 through.....??? however many... keep using bigger and bigger sledgehammers.

She's not my boss. The one who doesn't want me to write if my wife. She has Parkinson's Disease and is afraid that I will stop giving her constant attention, which she does need. The problem is that she is afraid I will ignore her while she is sleeping, by writing something. I should also point out that I used to write New Testament Greek Lessons, put them on a website and gave them away. After hackers inserted malicious malware into my website, I had to take down the site, and later, my computer crashed. I lost my universal font and now only have a small computer which I cannot use with a universal true front. Not able to write more Greek lessons, I decided to start studying craft issues. She then got Parkinson's and, now tells me I am betraying her by wanting to write a story. Sometimes we have to set aside our own life goals to comfort a loved one. However, to be blunt, when I am pushed around and told to forget my hopes and deams, I find my care for her makes me angered. If I were a better man, I wouldn't get angry just because I am not allowed to do anything I can either enjoy, or even feel slightly better for doing. Instead I would freely give up my hopes and dreams and get ordered around for eighteen hours a day for the one woman I love. I hate myself for it, but I am angry at her for getting that sick.

By far the biggest challenge in writing is to actually get yourself to write consistently. At least, that's how it is for me. Everything else can be studied, and there are as many ways to plot a novel as there are writers - perhaps more. I, for one, really like Dan Wells's 7 point method for structuring a story, but many will prefer to discovery-write the whole thing and revise heavily afterwards.
