Free League has really been killing it in the tabletop RPG space. I recently picked up Vaesen (another Year Zero Engine RPG) and it's just quality.

Not crazy about the having to roll 6's. My table played 3 games of about 4 hours each with dice pools from 3-7 and the number of times my players failed to get any 6's at all was frustrating to the entire group to the point that we decided to just use the book as a resource and use another system. This dice system just made the characters look incompetent at anything below 6 dice but I guess that's to be expected when you have an 83.3% chance of failure per die baked into every roll, it's like freaking amateurs wrote this system.

Really like the idea of rolling the players’ stress die for them and love the idea of not revealing what item they’ve dropped until they go for it! Also, great advice about constantly rolling dice to keep the players guessing and adding extra tension. This is the game I’ve been most excited to listen to actual plays and I can’t get enough of it. I’m even considering GMing for the first time to get my regular gaming group to play it. I love your excitement for this system throughout your videos! Thx for the tips!

Superb review and presentation. Can you play as Starfleet federation with the Klingon empire core rulebook, or the book is very specific to the Klingons?

Brilliant pointers. Just finished running Chariot last night and it's honestly the best game I think I have ever run, certainly the most enjoyable.
@xaxuelx79872 жыл бұрын
The game system is good... however it is a bit slow and very dependent of exhibition and narrative...on which some groups thrive... The group I play with would fall out of their seats in some of the sessions I have seen played on line... not that the dms were bad or anything its that my group is antsy... I have run other games with a shell of a story within a story and they have to engage in dialogue with other characters or situations... sometimes this takes a bit too long for their liking and they start to pick fights with the NPC or do stupid things to get the group into trouble... So, I would edit some of the scenes narrative or break it up with a bit of rivalry or banter on a ship or colony site. where the players can spar against each other while at the same time divulging data and plot points to them. If your group is say more patient than mine disregard... I just know they would be swinging from my ceiling fan if they have not shot their smart gun after an hour of play...

Really awesome advice! I would think the only thing I would check with players is the lost/dropped items idea. I could see some players having a problem with suddenly not having an item with little to no warning. Also it can be argued that you could be well aware of what you dropped but find you have no way to easily get it back and that could create tension as well.

Hmm, interesting, sounds a bit like classes, not really a fan of needing a particular style of PC in parties. Sort of puts me off trying it, been meaning to for awhile. How does alearner fair if they have no figher with them, or a fighter fair without learning? Should there not be routes for each to solve the mystery without leaning on the other?
@boxtoboard14032 жыл бұрын
There are multiple routes but our experience is that it works best if you can have somebody with a decent logic stat to build learning on. With that in mind a Doctor, Academic or Private Investigator work really well, but each plays very differently
@stochasticagency2 жыл бұрын
Get the PDF and give it a chance. That's a bit too narrow of thinking for a system like MYZ. There are no penalties for a character to "study or lean" skills that seemingly fall outside their archetype. While characters do have a "Main skill" the player is free to place points elsewhere. In the group I am running now there is an Academic (Historian), their main skill is Learning, however, she has points in Close Combat. Why? Because she studies Canne de combat as a past-time. With such a small list of skills, it's not difficult for multiple characters to have a point in Learning and/or Investigation. There are just some characters who will likely be better at these things because of their archetype, the Private Detective vs Doctor due to the "Main Skill." It also pays to keep in mind the type of game that Vaesen is, it's part investigation/mystery solving, not kill the monster and take the treasure. In other words, characters become more tailored to the concept that the player wants. The game is much broader than people think.

Looks like a very good wee box. Quality of books looks better than some of the (also very high quality) Chaosium starter boxes. I like the fact they went with Card covers on the booklets, makes them more durable. Been playing Symbaroum for a while now and the combat can be brutal. Also magic is dangerous to the caster. Great game but play style best if RP heavy. If you like more fighty systems this may be one to avoid...or have a stack of replacement characters.

When choosing equipment, rules as written you should only choose two items total, not one from each row. I find it weird, but the book says "choose two of the starting items below". I really want to know who's choosing the deck of cards over a weapon or armour, though.

As someone who has created their own miniatures game, I hope that someone from Steamforged listens to the players like you. It would be amazing to have a thriving community with a heart and a willingness to make a video like this. It is so easy to make a video and be angry, it is much harder to have a heart-to-heart conversation.

I've been in a weekly campaign for a few months and we're having a blast. Our GM is also Irish! Your thoughts are bang on, in this review. The physical book is very nice. The cover and paper, fonts, and the ART! The layout makes sense and format follows other Free League products, using YZ rules engine. Plays great as an investigation and mystery type RPG. Since you rarely fight the Vaesen directly, having stat blocks isn't necessary - allowing GMs to create their own vaesen very easily - maybe using local folk lore unrelated to the Mythic North. ;) I hope your review helps someone else to try this system out for their table - thanks!

I had a copy of the pdf for A Wicked Secret which is the first expansion published for the game with 4 mysteries in it and then I literally just used screenshots from the book into a powerpoint to use on zoom. It really is a superb game. I'm putting together a load of content for the channel based round it to help players and GMs. So for example a couple of videos going through what the different types of Vaesen are at a very basic level but with no real spoilers. Basically the idea is to allow players to have the same understanding that someone who'd heard fairy tales in the region would have. Best way not to miss those is to be sure to subscribe!

Englishman here, grew up with my grandmother telling me so many cautionary stories about fairies. During the Victorian era, we sanitized our folklore and made fairies into cherubic whimsical beings but there's a lot more authentic folklore out there that refers to 'the fair folk' as things to be avoided at best or placated at worst.
