This was a documentary, in the year 2000 I think. I was 11 and watched it on TV. I remember one of the food handlers having to disconnect the "poo pipe" as he called it as the sub was casting off. I also remember the men eager to get at the kit kats and other treats in the cardboard boxes. In 2000 the Kursk was lost too, after this documentary aired I believe. What was weird was that a Russian submarine was the final set piece in that year's Bond film, The World Is Not Enough, which I didn't get to see until several years later.

@@afcesuh6108 I believe it was Týr that you lot struck. Týr was attempting to cut a trawl wire when the first collision happened (at 20+ knots if I remember rightly), almost capsizing Týr. Týr then managed to cut the wire successfully before being rammed again. At which point both ships were heavily damaged and Captain Guðmundur Kjærnested started heading for home whilst being pursued by the British ship Statesman. You lot then had to go all the way to Portsmouth for repairs as far as I know. No hard feelings btw, we know you were just doing your jobs, same as us.

@drax58723 жыл бұрын
Well, as my grandad used to say when he brought out his old trawl cutter to show us youngsters "The English were only doing their jobs... We just did ours better." (Usually followed by a smug grin and a wink) Sad to hear that Hull still hasn't recovered though, but then again your Government totally sold you out by letting the EU basically r*pe English coastal waters.

One of my shipmates was in the cod wars, he told me about the games played by the gunboats, one pipe made by his skipper during manoeuvring which always had him tickled was"Standby for collision forrad! Belay that, standby for collision midships! Belay that, standby for collision aft! Oh never mind he's missed!"
@drax58723 жыл бұрын
Just a bit of info for you and your old shipmate: Our boys weren't really aiming for the ships, they were looking to make sudden sharp turns and slip behind so they could try and make a dash for the trawlers to get back to cutting the trawl wires. Keep the same pace as the Frigates -> Slow down suddenly and make a sharp turn towards the Frigate -> Narrowly miss them and then go full steam ahead to go for the trawlers. That was pretty much the plan (although "accidental" ramming didn't exactly hurt morale)

I remember my time on Bagshanty (HMS Bacchante). I missed the first trip - we sailed from Chatham and between the Shetlands and the Faroes my appendix burst, so was flown to the Faroes for emergency surgery. While there I met another RN sailor who'd fractured his pelvis and legs when a green sea came over the foc'sle during a RAS. After repatriation and a bit of sick leave I rejoined at Rosyth for the subsequent tours. We had a BBC film crew on board and the skipper had to keep telling us not to chuck rotten fruit and veg at the gunboats - it didn't look as though we were taking things seriously!

@@alanknights3839 The RN being the good guys wouldn't have been 'good' news at the time.
