Thanks for the video and the part number. Saved me a lot of research on a Wednesday night when I will be traveling out of town Friday night to a wedding. Hoping Amazon comes through. No one in town seems to have the part in stock.

I'm wanting to learn to solder just for doing repairs and wiring on my guitars, installing new switches, pots, wiring pickups, etc. (techs charge a small fortune these days, if you can even find one who's not booked for weeks in advance). I'm not going to be doing anything like soldering on circuit boards or components, literally just wiring to toggle switches and pickup leads and stuff. What's a suitable beginner friendly iron, and what sort of tip is best for that kind of work?
@engineeringgarage299316 күн бұрын
You should buy a soldering station. Switches and pots act as a heat sink and require a higher wattage to properly solder wires to. Check out my other video for a soldering station that may be a good fit for you. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZqQiH6kft-kbc0
@ZigbertD11 күн бұрын
@@engineeringgarage2993 Thanks for your reply. Funnily enough, I watched a couple of other soldering videos, one specifically about working on guitars, that also recommended a higher wattage station for those kinds of tasks, and before I'd even seen this reply to my comment I ordered the exact one you reviewed in the video you linked, the Yihua 926. I have a pickup toggle switch I'm going to (try to) install to replace a broken one on one of my guitars, just waiting for my next day off work so I can take my time.

I noticed that this particular part is apparently not compatible with the 2013 kia soul? I was wondering if I get the correct part would it still be the same steps involved?

Yes, replacing your connector should be a very similar procedure.

Only question is, will it fail early? Looks nice but i bough decade ago a bunch of Chinese irons and soon after they all sort of failed. So are the new crop good... maybe a year lasting?
@engineeringgarage2993Ай бұрын
So far this one has lasted me over a year. I don't use it much but when I do it still works perfectly. Leaving soldering irons on for prolonged periods is the worst thing you can do to any iron, some of the newest versions of this type iron have an auto power off feature which should greatly help their longevity.

Hello 👋.. May you please tell me what the little box that the plug is connected to is used for? And also do I need it? Or am I able to plug it directly into a wall outlet.
@engineeringgarage2993Ай бұрын
You do not need that box. It's a power meter, I use it to measure how much current the items I review use.

I have one, and it works well. However before I used it I checked the earthing (grounding). It turned out that the top blue part was not earthed because paint doesn't conduct. Also there were single insulated wires carrying 230V (or 120V where you are) through holes in the metal work, which is also a no-no. These things were easily fixed with a grinding tool, some shake-proof washers and some grommet strip. But it shouldn't have been necessary.

why was there a amazon gift card in it?
@engineeringgarage29932 ай бұрын
It was a fake gift card. On the back they wanted you to leave good feedback in exchange for them possibly sending you a gift card. Tons of Chinese sellers use to do this, I don't know if this is allowed by Amazon anymore.

I want to solder broken silver jewelry. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
@ItsAlwaysRusty3 ай бұрын
My sons car staring having the drivers side headlight go out like this. Checked power and grounds with the connector and it was fine. Looking at it further you could see a small amount of melting over the center of the connector just enough to cause a fitment issue with the bulb. As a test I bent the center slot tighter and it worked to get the light to come on. Knowing that would be a temporary fix I went right to the store and got the connector you suggested and it works great now. Thanks so much for putting this repair onto KZbin. Helped so much..

I think this may be what’s wrong with mine. My 2014 soul, while driving the headlights will totally go out for a few seconds at a time. They come back on but at night it’s scary lol. Sometimes they flicker but sometimes totally go off and then like 15 sec later come back on. It makes the dash go back to bright too, like you’ve turned them off. It’s wild. Do you think this could fix that issue?
@engineeringgarage29935 ай бұрын
If both headlights go out at the same time you more than likely have a bad headlight relay or power connection to the headlight circuit. The melted bulb connection I show will affect each headlight independently.

Will this solve the issue of headlights constantly going out? I was told the alternator power was set too high??? Any help is appreciated because my wife’s Kia soul headlight is constantly going out.
@engineeringgarage29937 ай бұрын
That was the same symptom my wife's Soul had. I think the poor socket connection caused the headlamp to flicker and ultimately fail. I replaced 2 bulbs before I discovered the bad headlamp socket by wiggling the connection with the headlights on.

Do you think you should still spend more for better soldering iron(or a soldering station) than getting this?
@engineeringgarage29938 ай бұрын
It depends on your use case. For what you get at that price it makes a good iron for people starting out, intermittent use or a good small iron for your field repair tool kit. As a daily driver, I would step up to a soldering station.

One important note is that the wire of the iron is important. It should bend easily and not try to go back to its packaged shape, therefore the wire won't try to move the iron when you put it to rest. That's usually the primary difference between good and cheap soldering iron. In general all irons are gonna solder.

Mine has worked great from day 1. Maybe shipping damage breaks the core and causes premature failure?
