God almighty , I am loving mine so much . Really just kind of blows my mind every time I sit down and play it . Has brought me to literal tears a few times . As a 40+ year guitarist and a hack pianist / synthesist , it is simply incredible to get to bring all the touch and wiggle Ive developed over the years of guitar playing to the synth world . Just stunning , I hope expressive e gets all the success in the world ( while also secretly hoping no one else gets one 😏) . I have used it in ensemble stuff and it makes me instantly a better and more creative addition to the group . Incredible in the studio . Sets my soul and creativity alight . I adore it and am nothing short of blessed to have one . It was way more expensive than most of the rest of my synths but feels like the lowest cost to highest value instrument I’ve ever owned and I’ve got some holy grail stuff , especially with guitars . I am thrilled with mine ! !!!! Thx for the vid , keep it quiet tho 😏, zimmer has already spilled the beans ! (I kid , I hope everybody gets one ) . I imagine the new little module version will get some more folks on board ,however , it really doesn’t give the full effect with out the super special key set . I’ve tried a bunch of other wacky , buggy assed mpe interfaces but the keybed of the osmose towers above the rest .

So inspiring! Would love to have a thorough look at the presets. Can't seem to figure out how the HZ Darkness can be in tune when there's no formula containing X that controls the pitch as far as I can see.

Hi, thanks for your work. I have a question: the Octave Slide effects shown at 33:42, would it also be possible on the Osmose Expressive E? I ask for it, because I have the feeling that something like this is perhaps not possible on the Osmose due to its non-sliding type of keyboard. Let me know if possible. Thanks

Nice, but as is often the case with the Haken world, it sounds too experimental for me. First of all, I would like a simple bread-and-butter synth for my Osmose. And above all, where can I get these special synths?

It essentially has the same mechanics as a clavichord. And why it has taken this long for a company to make an instrument like this for sound synthesis is beyond me, but at least we're finally here!

Would you practice traditional piano repertoire on this, or would you use a normal board with high quality samples?
@JOSHMADOFF6 ай бұрын
Osmose is unique as a midi controller in that you can dial in precise pressure curves. So I do us it to control piano plugins if I need a very sensitive performance. And I feel very comfortable playing piano sounds on it in any genre. But when I'm practicing for the sake of strengthening my hands and sharpening, specifically, my piano technique, I use a real piano.

Thanks David Gerard Matthews for a super introduction and historical review of this very important instrument! I appreciate you work. And thank you Lippold Haken for bringing Mr. Matthews to ContinuuCon. By now, many of the most recent Continuucon participants have-thanks to LIppold’s incredible generosity, a copy of my book/CDs “Electronic Perspectives: Vintage Electronic Musical Instruments.” There are some 6 pages in that publication that were cleaned up and restored by Joe Bastardo-my ace graphics artist, from the original 1928 introductory publication for the “ondes Musicales,” later known as the ondes Martenot. I hope to reproduce that complete booklet, as well as the 1937 “Programme” that relates to the use of the ondes Martenot at the Paris Exposition of 1937. Frankly this will depend on my ability to recoup the considerable sum spent to produce EP:VEMI. The web site for that is electronicperspectives.com and a number of interesting artifacts can be viewed/heard and downloaded re not only Maurice Martenot’s instruments, but many others as well at drtomrhea.com and/or KZbin Channel electronic perspectives, including my talk re a history of electronic musical instruments at the inaugural ContinuuCon in Ashevlle, NC. One minor note: Lev Termen’s (Theremin) instrument precedes Martenot by approximately a decade, just to keep the historical record straight. Best, and thanks again! Tom Rhea.

I NEED to know when firmware 2.0 is being released! I love my Osmose so, so much. It has changed me as a player (and a person 😂) and I remain deeply in love, but I NEED more patch management functions and I NEED pressure glide and arp over MIDI. I'm driving a GS Music e7 polysynth (as well as the EaganMatrix) and with those updates, this thing instantly becomes the greatest MIDI controller of all time, period. I will bide my time... Thank you, you brilliantly talented designers and engineers for creating this magical instrument!

@@Cloud_Brn Yeah, it's been out for a while, but it's pretty buggy at present and Expressive E is a very small team so it may be a while before it gets patched. More great stuff is coming soon though, including some big updates to the Haken engine itself. Can't wait!

I’m right on the fence with this. I want expressiveness, I also want to improve my key playing, not by more functionality on the key bed but by practicing and learning more theory and such. So I want both. People tell me if I want to learn to play keys better, don’t get an Osmose. I tell myself I can dial down the sensitivity and play it like a piano and then go nuts with the settings and get weird. If I could get your thoughts on that Josh, I’m ready to spend I think.
@JOSHMADOFF7 ай бұрын
I've found that Osmose has expanded my playing abilities, on piano and other keyboards, by enabling me to think differently about how I play, and using alternate technoques. I would say, if you already have a "regular" keybaord, practice on both the Osmose and that. My personal philosophy about learning music is that it should be a "musical" journey. So having tools that empower you to make more inspiring and musical things, imo, will only encourage and nurture the learning process.

Yes, please?🤣 The Mahling presets are fun. I put up some audio on YT a while back... but it's the same exact kind of audio manipulation as you hear in this video, except using the Mahling sample, which is analysed and in the Continuum already. It would be great to plug other samples into those presets. It would be helpful to have a pdf with screengrabs showing where each function is, that we would use, in the usual order of operations. How to load or import a sample, and then how to listen, how to select the desired region, and then each step after that, which button or knob does what. The artistry of it, we can figure out on our own. This video is great as an overview of what you've accomplished so far. It looks ready for people to experiment with. I'm not on FB, so I'll check the Haken website this summer. The graphics look fine. It's editor software, which doesn't really have a live performance aspect, so I wouldn't worry TOO much about making it perfect. I can see it would be helpful to have Christophe's experience using it🥺, so I'm looking forward to it.

re: the "Gestural" vis a vis "Organic" discussion - very reflective of similar things that Vlad Kremer of Soma Labs talks about as what informs the design of his instruments as well. Even to the extent that some of the Soma Labs instruments do not have MIDI out (MPE or not).

Well any kind of further software development is for the better. A part of me, however, oddly feels a bit uneasy about going against the puritanical idea of the Eagan matrix. Exploring the special sounds in the Osmose and treating them like a monolith definitely has its charm. I just hope the whole sound design philosophy carried to the Osmose doesn’t get watered down. 🫢
@clemrslt8 ай бұрын
I feel the same. Though I completely understand the wish to tweak the sound engine in a more familiar way, the deeper level of sound design the EM allows to reach still appears to me as an exciting sound laboratory. More opened to any idea, less oriented towards a specific technique. With the risk that Lippold mentions to get lost in the possibilities. But that's also the beauty of it : no one's telling you what to do. You have to figure it out by yourself
@pachde8 ай бұрын
I don't think there's much risk of the EM getting watered down. Nothing has been taken away from the traditional experience of designing an EM instrument. The new capabilities added to the engine (and a few adjustments in the overall design of the MIDI protocols) opens up some fantastic opportunities for Haken Audio, Expressive E, and other 3rd party developers to innovate. The new firmware will be much easier to write external software for. The design of a layer to underpin a "specialty synth" is even more demanding than designing a normal EM instrument. It's a meta-level of design that needs to be done. But once it's there, it enables a more normal "sound design" experience, which Ed mentioned surprised him how effective it is (even though he himself is the principle designer of the idea).
@clemrslt8 ай бұрын
@@pachde I agree, this feeling was the one just after seeing the video and hearing about these specialty synths for the first time. I needed some time to understand where it could lead and I admit it's clearly a huge step forward. It's exciting, I'm already thinking about specialty synths I could make. You are creating one yourself to connect to VCV rack, right?
@pachde8 ай бұрын
@@clemrslt I have already published the HC One plugin to the VCV Rack library. I'll have a lot of work to catch up when the new firmware ships. HC-1 does provide value for EM device owners, but it isn't a specialty synth per se - it's general access, with cv automation available for Macros, Recirculator and a few other parameters. I think my work did spur and inspire some of the ideas, and Lippold has been generous in recognizing my work.
@clemrslt8 ай бұрын
@@pachde Indeed he is generous! I've just tested HC-1, works well, congratulations, it must have been a lot of work! And I can definitely see how the principle of specialty synths is already in your module. Do you think a lot of third party developers will produce specialty synths for Osmose?
