One hit wonder isn’t the right term, but she maybe had the best “where did that come from” day in Olympic history. We knew what she was capable of on bars based on her performance at worlds, but she was still so young and unknown. This was a stacked final, with all three all-around medalists, and the reigning world champion. And she rolls up, gets the first 10 at the Olympics, beats the all-around champion, then gets a silver on beam an hour later. And she retired the following year. She showed us her best, beat the best and went out on top. Incredible

The scoring during this quad was criminal! Lysenko was head and shoulders above the others. The fact that these judges didn’t reward her for her risk was insane!

Absolutely my passion in gymnastics between 1985 and 1988. I followed everything I could about her at a time without the internet. I cried at the Olympic victory. Elena, Korbut, Boguinskaya, Korkhina are iconic and, of course, the best ever from Romania: Silivas.

Yes she did.... she had her chances in 1985 at the Worlds, but fell off of the Balance Beam in the All Around. And on Uneven Bars was also a medal possible, but she almost crashed her dismount. And in the Balance Beam Finale she almost became the World Champion, but then Daniela Silivas came along. The reporters talked about the 'Revenge of L.A.' and I somehow believed in that back then.

of course I am impressed by the triple and the other tumbles as well, but I am reminded about the 2 cursed skills, press to handstand and scale that are the hardest to hold in a stacked difficulty routine. excellent form none the less
@Boban16114 күн бұрын
I can't even imagine how tough it must have been back then with the hard Floor. And how brave you must be, to actually want to do a triple somersault, knowing the landing will hurt so badly.

I miss watching the routine for the actual routine. Now, I basically ignore the "dance" and just see what tumbling passes they do.

That's so true. I think the CoP is to blame.... the girls collecting points to get the highest possible SV, that's what they got to do..... in former times they collected until the 10,0 was reached and the rest was Artistic - as it should be in Artistic Gymnastics. 😎😏

A 9,700 seems low for this vault. I think I remember reading that the judges reserved higher scores for Yurchenko-style vaults during that time period.

Did this vault even start out of a 10 in 1987?
@stephenquillen147912 күн бұрын
@@GymnasticsSavesLives If you look in the background at the 15-second mark, the display panel shows the vault number (3.64) and the start value (10). I looked at the Code of Points to make sure. Interestingly, a tuck front with a half twist (2.42) had a start value of 9.9.

I did the subtitles right now.... it is always interesting what commentators had to say during that time. What I loved back then (from Karl-Heinz Roland and Volker Rath) - is that they dared to be silent at certain moments. They commented, but you were able to watch the routine, without listening to comments non-stop.
