I know some people won’t like this but I caught my first salmon in about 1990 and I am amazed anyone wants to go today, not only due to the death of fish but do you really want to hassle a fish that’s that endangered. Put away your rod and go trout fishing . The fish must come first. Incidentally I don’t rate the beat I have fished it.

Fabulous fish, personally I don’t salmon fish any more , they have enough hassle without anglers these days, those that make a home run should in my view be left alone.

Brilliant, informative and riveting video. Wonderful scenery, lots of wisdom. We may be the last generation to fish for wild salmon. Here in Newfoundland, numbers are dwindling year over year. Thank you,

Beautiful video Paul! You are right the drone footage does make for a great perspective. Totally agree with your concerns regarding the salmon stocks...we note the same thing here on the East coast of Canada. The usual culprits are considered: dams, salmon rearing pens, poorly managed resource with poaching and or predation, North Atlantic water temperatures, open sea netting by-catch by super trawlers, etc. etc. etc. It is gut wrenching to see this magnificent fish on a path to extinction...At least, we as fisherpeople can practice maneuvers to help our catch safely return to the rivers we frequent. we must advocate for the safe release of all the salmon we have the good fortune to encounter while practicing a responsible fishery. Cheers, Mike PS Sorry for the rant...

I think you comment sums up perfectly everything that is wrong with the management of salmon. It is a terrible situation and the powers that have the ability to make the necessary changes and too interested in short term grabs. I try not to be negative but I am extremely worried that extinction is a credible outcome.

Great beat, Steve and his ghillies always look after us..never feel I fished Junction pool very well, river looked lower than last time I fished it, noticed you weren’t wading far out (why do a lot of fishers feel they need to be standing in middle of pool, when reality they’ve probably pushed the fish further away!!) hopefully back there next month. Your right about the stocks, very concerning and too little has been done to late. Tight lines!!

Why keep swapping hands? Left or right handed? Just wondered . . .
@FinLineFly
@FinLineFly 2 ай бұрын
Good question. I am naturally a right hand winder. Right hand wind is the traditional wind for fly reels dating back to the origins of fly fishing reel design. A fisher would wind with the right hand and palm the reel with the left hand to provide with the drag manually so it is necessary to change arms holding the rod. I use this type of reel (click and pawl design quite a lot) thus with my right hand wind so I change arms to make use of the dominant arm. For a left hand wind click and pawl the necessity to change arms is the same, just the other way around. To be fair I could wind the modern reels with adjustable drag systems left hand but I'm so used to right hand wind I stick with that. Also changing arms with a double handed rods is necessary when applying side strain depending whether the fish is up or downstream of you. Each to their won really but this is the most comfortable for me.

Unfortunately all is not good there either. Consistently low water and lower numbers of fish but still a considerable run each year. Just hope it doesn't end up disappearing. Seems to be seal problem there same as here with huge numbers at the river mouth. But no bird issue though.
