Great video Dave! I've been carving for a bit... but just got a axe ! And have never used one carving except for actual cutting the tree ... I got a very old hewing axe head at a garage sale! Lol and carved a handle. I put a original grind one sided . What grind do you prefer?

Beautifully crafted piece of (art) work. Just what I was looking for. I’m not at the stage yet where I see the spoon in the lump of wood once it’s been axed but before knife work commences.

Hello Dave, I have periodically tried this technique on creating the crank on the top of the bowl since I first saw it. I thought I would say thank you, today I finally got it to comfortably work. Much love 💛

Great video, and beautiful spoon. How many coats of hemp oil would you recommend for spoons, kuksa's etc? Also how long should the spoons etc be left before theyre considered Ok to use? I heard they should be left in the sun for quite a long time for them to polymerise? Ive just applied a second coat to my Kuksa and cant wait to have a brew in it :D

will just cooking oil work?
@DaveTheBodger

No, it needs to be a hardening oil. Raw linseed, tung, walnut or hemp seed are most commonly used.

@@420o it doesn't matter, it'll likely wash out which is fine as spoons don't need oil, it's only to make them look prettier.

Thank you for a lovely tutorial! I will try carving out blank the way you showed. It looks interesting and i think i might like it! You are so correct on those deep bowls. I'm making spoons for a bit over half a year now as a hobby. Made a couple dozen or so and just now starting to make those bowls much more shallow :)

Dave, what are you thinking when you look at the blank to decide which end to put the bowl on?
@DaveTheBodger
@DaveTheBodger 5 жыл бұрын
Looking at the size, is it wide enough and deep enough. What's the grain doing, is there one end where the grain curves up like the bowl. Also looking for knots and how to keep them out of the way, out of the bowl. In this piece of wood there's not difference which end of way around by the looks of things.
