Making a spoon blank from round wood

My previous axe work video showed me starting with a nice rectangular block of wood but often we start with round wood from a branch. So here's how I start off making spoon from round wood, in this case rather gnarly lump of cherry. I also show making stop cuts with a saw, which is what I teach beginners rather than doing everything with the axe. There's a hopefully informative commentary so turn the sound on.

I'm planning a small project to make a spoon & fork out of a branch roughly the size of an average man's forearm from an old Mango tree that used to sit at the back of my parent's house in Kashmir which has to be felled after it was struck dead during a lightning storm last year. I retrieved this piece whilst I was out there. I'm a total beginner so not sure where to start or even if the wood will be fit for purpose! I've found a workshop in Birmingham where I plan to make the spoon & fork. Basically i'll have access to all the gear, but no idea haha !

kind of a big subject - depends on what tools you have, what previous experience and many other factors. I can't really give you much of a steer here. If you look for other videos on spoon carving - Zed Outdoors channel has some good ones, or look up Barn The Spoon. The best resource I know of is www.spoonclub.co.uk but it's not free. Ask around and see if you can find someone in your area who knows how to do this and ask them for some help. Good luck.

Seems like too much blade for such a small spoon.

It's a Robin Wood www.wood-tools.co.uk carving axe. Pretty standard for spoons of all sizes.

@@DaveTheBodger Oh well, if it's a Robin Wood then . . . Maybe he can sell you a less wobbly chopping block.
