Vajadzēja domāt vairāk loģiski (tagad jau viegli par to domāt) un mierīgi pameklēt apkārt, tad gols būtu sasniedzams. Laba macība. www.xcontest.org/latvia/en/flights/detail:kenguri/8.6.2024/10:55

Some years back I was minding my own business, calmly surfing below some airspace here in Switzerland. I find a smooth thermal some nice 4-5 m/s so I start turning. At some point im around a 100 m below the airspace so I carry on flying towards the next mountain range. Turns out I was not in the center of that thermal at all. It went to 6,7,8,9 all the way to 10.5 m/s and that totally smooth. Just in a straight line I destroyed that airspace as bad as it gets.. 😅😅

Well it's the beauty of the pullback when you let go of the accelerator. You can even make it more dramatic with a bit more height, start with a nice break, let your wing dive down and in the dive go full speedbar, you'll get a major pull back as soon as you let go of the speedbar and break :D ! it almost feels like flying a mustsche wing. I did it a lot in my last video starting at 0:26. If you do it just remember to always keep some tension on your breaks.

The waves are really dangerous. But the top of the troubles, while flying in dynamic flows are: 1. Collapses when performing wingovers or other funny things at low attitudes 2. Collisions with trees and other objects near the ridge 3. Downwind landings 4. Being blown away by the wind 5. Accidents after a rough launch 6. Stalls (toplandings, turns etc)

I am a beginner pilot but as far as I know, you shouldn't play too much with the brakes while landing. On second landing, you applied and released the brakes which increased your speed and after that not enough altitude to slow down again. btw I've done the same thing like 10 times :)

Haha, my first flight after flight-school was also on the Bischling (second landing). Kinda funny you decided to land downwind on this humongously large landing field, because I did the EXACT. SAME. THING. I think it's because the windsock's pole is bend, which is kinda misleading, depending from where you look at it. What's the first mountain? It looks so familiar but I can't quite make it out.

Thanks for putting this up. It's my dream to someday fly around in the sky like that in a big circle and look around. I don't think it looks that boring if you're a couple thousand feet in the air flying around a big circle and everything is going good I can't find that boring at all. You're showing the earn it part of the fly game. Altitude is like money in the bank good as gold. AirSpeed is like cash in your pocket try not to spend it all and go broke too soon. Later on time it perfectly so your bank account being your altitude, hit's zero at the same time, as you run out of air speed that being your pocket money. Paragliding is like the teamster's Union in America fly right or they break your leg. Pay your union dues do all your ground handling and then do it over until you are more polished before you begin to fly.
@sgdran Жыл бұрын
Hello! How do you manage your break inputs to core thermals? It looks like you keep your inner break steady while you manage the outer, like textbooks say... But don't you think that method sends the turn out of proper coordination (it's a yaw input while the bank angle remains steady). I would like to know your opinion on this. Thanks!
@kurkotava80111 ай бұрын
In the relatively strong thermal, I use the outer brake very slightly, only to control pressure, etc. I'm always trying to keep the airspeed as high as possible. The inner brake input change amplitude is no more than 3-5 cm. I'm working more with the weight shift. For my wing (PHI Maestro 1 S, load at end, 85 kg in-flight weight) this is the only possible variant to safely manage turbulent thermals. But thanks for the comment! I will more be experimenting to manage the yaw. The thermaling efficiency is still my main problem.
@sgdran11 ай бұрын
I wanted to know your opinion because I can see your thermalling skills are solid (I've watched your other videos as well). I can thermal decently myself, but I'm currently doing my research into other, maybe more exotic approaches to thermaling, to implement them in my technique and squeeze a little more out of these devilish beasts (thermals)😅. Thank you for your precise answer, which gives me new meat for thought and further experimenting. Like your videos very much. Keep posting! 👌
@kurkotava80111 ай бұрын
@@sgdran Thanks :) I can share two really exotic techniques (I use them): 1. "The toilet paper method" :) When you are in the core or near it, just freeze your position and do nothing for some turns, then, maybe, correct slightly against the wind, if needed. The philosophy is - the piece of paper working in thermals is always better because the paper does nothing wrong ))) And is an opportunity to relax for you. 2. "Lazy upwind thermalling". When you are in the weak thermal and you need to go against the wind - just fly straight upwind with more or slight brakes. It's working with wind 10-15 km/h and thermal 1-2 m/s. As a result you lose relative air height but stay in the thermal drift (in the cone). Not always. :) I have repeatedly flown several kilometres in this way with the updraft or in zeros. I'll see if I can get some footage about these techniques (but afraid of getting a lot of criticism) 😀
@sgdran11 ай бұрын
@@kurkotava801 I definately love and apply "toilet paper method", but didn't have a name for it 🤣. One of the reasons it works is because it filters the "lift noise" (the vario beeps sometimes due to gusts or just the natural oscillations of the glider when flying in bumpy air). We might quick-react to those and ruin the coring process... The "lazy upwind thermaling" makes a lot of sense. I'll try it next time I'll go flying 💪 Here's my grain of sand: Let's call it "The slide". When you're circling but not yet centered and your outer wing hits more lift, reduce your inner weightshift (thus loading the outer wing more to oppose the pull) and pull more inner brake. You'll induce a side-slip to squeeze a bit more lift but still keep circling... I'm still refining this idea 🧐 Stay open to criticism with the right amount of skepticism, and your performance will definately go up, although I honestly think your thermaling skills are already very good. Thank you for your tips!!

"The slide" - looks great, thank you! I'll try the weight shift more to the outer side in this manner. Hope for good weather at Vilnius Open this weekend!

how do you know which one's the right one ?
@surreygraham6714 Жыл бұрын
This is a function of wind speed and altitude. On a nil wind day the thermal might stay pretty close to the thermal source as it rises. On a strong wind day the source will be further upwind as it is being blown towards you as it rises.
@kurkotava801 Жыл бұрын
The axis of the spiral points to the place of thermal source. If you centre the thermal correctly, you can use Google Earth to identify the source. This does not always work, but in most cases. A good lecture about thermals: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqi2e6B5fMupd9E
