To stand before the world and sing a song and look as though you do it every day None the less not to make A mess of it , takes a special person. And if you think different this Sunday go to the biggest church in town , stand in the choir And sing for the first time without shaking.

As a New Zealander I remember her when she was " discovered " here as a very talented young teenager and from the timing of this recording I suspect that she was still a teenager and she has recorded a number of albums that were received with enthusiasm by many of us here in NZ. I simply can't imagine what 614 people could find wrong with that recording with such a beautiful backing.

It is undisputed that she has a beautiful voice, however she fails to deliver the emotional content of this piece. There is no anguish, agony, no strife in her voice. If you look at the lyrics and the context in which it was written, this is not an operatic or heavenly moment in the life story of Fantine. A beautiful voice yes, but she failed to convey the tremendous emotional content. Fantine was ravaged, raped and forced to live on the streets in the most horrific circumstances imaginable. It is not meant to be sung by a perfectly pitched ingenue. Vocally, this singer is impressive but this is the wrong song for her.
