Wild horse and Slushy, Dry Lake, the Peaks. This was written by Girl Scouts backpacking San Gorgonio in SoCal 💚 Those peaks in the song are 11,000 feet up in the sky!

We used to sing this song at our summer day camp. Along with John Jacob and Shabooya Roll Call. So many memories. Wow.

I grew up in Girl Scouts. I began in second grade, back in the 50’s, you had to be seven. I was a Girl Scout until senior year in High School. I had two daughters and two Girl Scout troops, kindergarten through eight grade. I love Girl Scouts. They taught me so much.

This is how i learned it 🎶 so i walked around the corner and i walked around the block and i walked right in to a doughnut shop. I picked up the doughnut and licked off the grease and handed the lady a 5 cent piece and she looked at the doughnut and she looked at me and she said this nickel isn’t good to me there’s a hole in the middle i can see right through. I sad “hey there’s a hole in my doughnut to” . So she chased me round the corner and she chased me round the block and she chased back up to the doughnut shop. She took back the doughnut and placed it in the grease and she handed me back my 5 cent piece. Thanks for the workout peace out girl scout! 🎶

My grandparents were from Cincinnati, and this is how they taught it to us: Well, I went to Cincinnati, and I walked around the block. And I walked right into a donut shop. And I picked up a donut and I wiped off the grease and I handed the lady a five cent piece. Well, she looked at the nickel and she looked at me and she said, "By golly, you can plainly see. There's a hole in the nickel and it goes right through." And I said, "There's a hole in the donut, too." Boom. Boom.

This is how I learned it: This is a repeat after me song, Except for the chorus, Which goes like this: Chorus He was a big bold man, he was a desperado, From Cripple Creek way out in Colorado, And he horsed around like a big tornado, And everywhere he went he gave his yee-hoo There was a desperado from the wild wild west, He wore a big sombrero and two guns across his chest, He rode out to Chicago just to give the west a rest, And everywhere he went he gave a yee-hoo. Chorus He went to Coney Island just to check out all the sights, He rode the rollercoaster and it gave him such a fright, It gave him double vision so he shot out all the lights, And everywhere he went he gave a yee-hoo. Chorus There was a desperado just a walkin' down the street, There was a big policeman just a cruisin' on his beat, He grabbed him by the collar and he grabbed him by the seat, And he threw him so he couldn't give his yee-hoo. Chorus

This is the "official" 1950s version. Note the change in the chorus -- "bravado" rhymes with "desperado" and "Colorado". I don't know how it got changed to "tornado" which doesn't rhyme. Each time the teacher sang "war whoop!", the children would imitate the sound by humming while quickly patting their mouths. Also, I know it's picky, but gunslingers wouldn't wear guns on their chests -- they wore them just below their waists, hence "beneath his vest". There was a desperado from the wild and woolly West, He came into Chicago just to give the West a rest. He wore a big sombrero and two guns beneath his vest And everywhere he went he gave his war whoop! chorus: Oh a big, bold man was the desperado, From Bad Man's Gulch, way down in Colorado, He walked around with great bravado, And everywhere he went he gave his war whoop! He went to Coney Island just to take in all the sights, He saw the hootchie-kootchie and the girls dressed up in tights They got him so excited that he shot out all the lights, And as he left they heard him give his war whoop! (repeat chorus) A couple big policemen were out walking on their beat, They saw the desperado, he was coming down the street. They grabbed him by his collar and they grabbed him by his seat And threw him where he couldn't give his war whoop! (repeat chorus)

I was treated up to doernbecher's children's hospital with the girl who wrote this song about the barges that used to travel across the Willamette River and I am so mad now that people are calling it a scout song when it was a song about a girl who wanted to survive and get out in the world and end up dying behind a window that couldn't Open

As a singer and singing teacher what I hear in this video is a rhythmically delivered SPOKEN version...I don't hear any actual singing in it. The one I learned in the '60s had an actual melody...It was interesting to hear it without a melody, though!
