The interview with Shankar Sahay, the author of "Chandausi Junction", offers an insightful glimpse into the mind of a writer who is deeply connected to the bygone era of India's railways. In this collection of short stories, Sahay masterfully captures the nostalgia of life between 1942 and 1982, a time when the steam engine was the heart of Indian transportation. His passion for the subject is evident throughout the interview, as he reminisces about his childhood memories associated with the rails and stations that dotted India's landscape during that period. Sahay speaks with heartfelt affection about his inspiration for the book, which is rooted in his personal experiences and love for railways. His vivid recollections of the steam engines, bustling stations, and the simple joys of train travel paint a picture of a time when life was slower, yet full of wonder. He shares how the rail museum remains a place of solace for him, a reminder of his enduring love for the locomotives of that era, which still captivate him to this day. The author’s reflection on the importance of preserving such memories, not just for himself but for future generations, strikes a chord. DOI Junction is not just a collection of stories but a tribute to an era that shaped the childhood of many, reflecting India’s changing social fabric over four decades. Overall, the interview provides a rich understanding of Sahay's motivations and creative process. His ability to evoke nostalgia through the lens of the railways makes DOI Junction a must-read for anyone interested in reliving the charm and simplicity of a bygone India.
