The realization at the end while he is shooting the portrait of hitler is so intense! The moment he saw that once innocent child with his mother, he couldn’t fire a shot..because he wouldn’t be so different from the Nazis if he did… that took guts. Amazing movie.

I think no one has ever delivered the feeling of nostalgia one feels when they grow up and revisit their childhood home or memories than tarkovsky through this film.That wind gushing scene...wow.🖤spoke to my heart.

I think the way he remembers his mother in memory is in her older form, when she is old and not as her younger version cos how can a mother of such little kids be that old?

This is the first film i watched that vividly painted how nostalgia looks like, this film is how it feels, the homesickness for a dream, a place non existent but still within you, the silence, the childhood memory, an untouchable imagination, a wistful eye into the past.

The novel “LIVING AND THE DEAD” by Simonov from which is the original source of the movie, is even a better read. A brutally honest yet engaging view of the uncertain times that was 1941. A brilliant effort to make it into a movie and subtitle it as well by Mosfilm...

Put this film on instead of xfactor or some Saturday night pish and give a proper reality check

This film is about innate human loneliness, as all beautiful films are.
