I swing softhackles a lot especially when there is a hatch going on. I’ve found that during a hatch more often than not the fish are taking emergers rather than the adults and a softhackle does a nice job of imitating an emerging insect.

I cast in close, working my way out. I also tend to cast more directly across from me (perpendicular with the river), lay out a couple mends to get the fly just a little lower, then let the line tighten so I get a big 90 degree swing. The takes are VIOLENT, in the swifter water the fish has to make a decision to chase it down and at that point you are on a tight line and the fish usually hooks itself. At the end of the drift when the fly is nearly below you try slowly lifting the rod tip (Lisenring Lift? I think) and it will imitate the fly attempting to emerge. I get a lot of takes here at the end of the drift this way. Tight lines!

I’m in Vermont and my last big trout a few weeks back was 24 inches and then some. It had a chunk missing from its tail so she was no spring chicken and not a stocked brown but a natural. On the same day in the same spot inside 1 hour I got the 24 in brown and a 16’ rainbow and the biggest brook trout of my life which was pushing 16 inches and they dont come any better it was a beauty brooky. I only had to sacrifice one child and take up devil worship to get that brook trout and it’s $600 for mounting my sin. At the dinner table the empty seat my child once sat I’ll put the fish mount and I think my old lady is starting to resent me, She will never understand the sacrifice I made that day but all my dude friends do no need for explaining we just wink it out .

I have the same net as you do but can’t always use it because it’s to small. I have been fishing Vermont my whole life and am from here and it took 30 years to find my best spots to fish. This season I have got a 13in brown a 16in brown a 19in brown and a 24in brown. The big ones I have got this year all weigh 3-5 pounds and they can get as big as 30in and more. Last year I caught a 22in that was over 5 pounds and very fat and I lost one last year that couid be over 24in which is my record for brows. This year I also got my biggest broke trout ever. The brook trout don’t break 8in very oftin,this year I got one that was just over 15 in. A 20in brown or bigger is worthy of getting mounted Rainbow trout as well 20in minenum or bigger and a brown 15in is worthy of mounting. Every season I’ll keep the biggest brown and the biggest rainbow and the biggest Brooke trout. I’ll catch around 100 plus trout from spring to fall and release 97% or more of all I catch. I believe the browns are German or European not indigenous to the United States. It seems to me browns are an evasive species because there are more browns then brookies and rainbow combine.

@DownstreamDownrange
@DownstreamDownrange 2 ай бұрын
@@jacobhorner6503 hmmmm WBD is tough fishing for beginners! I would suggest LONG leader 13-15 feet minimum this time of year. And don’t get caught up with using 2 flies at once or anything complicated. Use a small pheasant tail nymph and just focus and presenting that 1 fly the best you can. I would also recommend making a drive in the fall when water temps cool to some stocked fish areas and sharpen skills on stocked trout
