This brings back fond memories of my time in the New South Wales Police Police Force - especially Dubbo where we had great camaraderie.

The Navy talked to Ernest Borgnine and thanked him for the show because they recruited so many new sailors, while the show was on the air. It was much like the gym, neighbors show and the marines. They called the show and said please don’t send that boy to war. That was a much more contemporary war story and we were busy sending troops to Vietnam right and left when that was on the air. So Jim neighbors got to stay stateside because the Marines requested it. I’m not sure it was ever part of the plan to send him to actual war, because that would be too expensive to film. It wasn’t really a military show. It was a relationship show and it was a fish out of water scenario.

Wally The Meanie never lets up on those PT sailors. He cooperates when superiors back up Skip. The Admiral likes those men.

And Binghamton comes out smelling like a rose in front of the admiral for all of McHale ś high jinks. McHale and crew get off the hook.

Great cast, especially Tim Conway and Joe Flynn. Ernest Borgnine had won an Academy Award for best actor a few years earlier.

I'd swear Binghamton and Parker are ad libing a lot of their lines and it works. Love the sympathetic portrayal of Uncle Admiral Parker.

Every war show had the "faked war is over" episode. They also had the toothache episode. It's tiring.
