To keep you chimney clean inside you have to carefully choose what you are burning. Some wood have high content of tar, resin. Just try to choose carefully. You pay less for trash and have to clean a furnace a lot, or you pay more but then have chimney clean. Nedostatek vsduchu is a next major issue causing tar formation in the furnace. I would advise to install furnace outside of the house. Reason is very simple: burning a wood or a charcoal will consume A LOT of AIR. Air (COLD) will come through a holes in a door, windows, roof... And this air will be COLD. You will heat street. Better to install the furnace outside, to provide a lot of air, then run hot water pipes in the house to heat your pokoje. And make your dveře a okna air-tight and make a přívodní ventilace s rekuperatorem, you can because you are the house owner. This will work much-much better! And, it would be absolutely amazing if you record some videa v češtině :)

Meh, Ideally I would add pure oxygen line and burn plastic waste in this furnace :D So as much for how I want to be careful with fuel. I am against making house air tight. If anything, I want to make dedicated air intake from outside. Recuperation is cool and all, but I don't want to spend money on it. Maybe one day, I will experience how awesome it is and install it. And I am not sure if anybody would apreciate czech language (maybe other slavs). Would have to subtitle it and such. These videos are already lowest possible effort lol

How much diesel or kerosene could you get for 500? Do you have a lower tariff for agricultural / jet fuels? You might check out one of those $75 Chinese diesel heaters. They put out 5kW if you use something to scavenge exhaust heat, approaching 95% efficiency wrt energy content of the fuel, and there are hydronic versions. I have one which keeps my house warm until it gets below freezing. They're so cheap you could install extras as backup.
@IlusysSystems
@IlusysSystems 4 күн бұрын
That is very good question! Diesel is like 3X more energy dense and ~2X more efficient to combust assuming 95% efficiency. So I've got roughly 9 tons of wood, so to completely replace it, I would need 1.5t or 1750l of diesel. Current diesel price is $1.43 per liter or $5.41 per gallon (we stand for Ukraine tho). So it would cost me around $2500 to keep myself warm on diesel from gas station. With agricultural diesel, this would come out to $313,11, but you need to do some tax fraud to use it cheaply :D. There are special fuels designated for heat generation. These are also taxed and the tax is returned after consumption of the fuel. Overall price would be $986. I have skimmed some documents and it looks like you can declare consumption just by measuring fuel level and you don't need special heater with bloody certified and sealed metering. That is good, but you still need to do paperwork which I hate more than anything. I am mostly looking for system, that will be on standby for 99% of a time and requires minimum maintenance, so this could be it. Other option is natural gas, but that does cost me money to have it connected. And it's more guarded due to possibility of leaks and such. Will have to think about this...

Put a fan blowing on the radiator and one blowing on the stove itself. It will not overheat. The carbon/creosote in the stove is not going interfere with heat transfer. It's forming probably because you have insufficient draft/exhaust flow (big tube to small tube on chimney). It could also be due to what you're burning and maybe the availability of intake air. You need to burn the stove hot or it's going form creosote in the chimney, then when it does get hot it's going to start a chimney fire and burn your house down.
@IlusysSystems
@IlusysSystems 4 күн бұрын
Yeah, the fan would work. Especially if you could force air to go inbetween radiator plates. As for burning hot - it is difficult, when the stove is lined essentially by water, which is my point. I would not buy this stove if I knew how it is constructed, but well, there were no drawings available and I assumed manufacturers having some expertise in this field lol. Also It could be that my wood is bit wet. Guy that sold it said, that it has been in dry conditions for 5 years. So far I was burning hardwood, rest of the pile is softwood, which I have tried and it has produced even more sut :/ Also I need to read a bit on chimney fires, because I don't quite understand how exactly it can cause fire. Only way I see how that could happen is if ember from chimney somehow gets to the attic space which has bunch of dry hey(I need to get rid of it as well) in it. but this can happen even without chimney fire. Otherwise there is pretty much no flamable material touching the chimney itself.
@nicholasboyarko1680
@nicholasboyarko1680 4 күн бұрын
@IlusysSystems Creosote has very low flashpoint around 82C but burns at 1000C, so it can nearly melt steel. It's a very dangerous fire risk.
@IlusysSystems
@IlusysSystems 4 күн бұрын
@@nicholasboyarko1680 Sure, I would not let such fire go. I have checked pipe from the stove just now, there is about 2mm deposit, so I should clean it fairly soon. The chimney itself does not have any service openings and the shape is rectangular(and huge), so I won't be able to inspect nor clean it until next season (at which point it will be unused probably).

hey i remember you, liked your stuff in the past and still. I see very few covering polymerization so want to put this idea in your head; creating etfe in an accessible diy fashion, can it be done? Its expensive and the dream of a floating torroid baloon-esque solar chimney ventilation system and/or power plant would be realized much easier with this polymer imo. I know thats random, just throwing this out into cyberspace to bounce off some neurons
@IlusysSystems
@IlusysSystems 5 күн бұрын
Eeeh I suspect, that this material is expensive for a reason. One thing is synthesis, which would be perhaps possible in home shop. But you will need strong pressure vessels, compressors, good vacuum pumps and inert gasses for flushing (TFE seems to form explosive oxides). This will yield a polymer powder/brick. The other thing is production of usable film / filament. This definitely requires a few square meters and industrial machinery like hydraulic presses, hot rollers, coating, stretching and drying machines to get usable product. Anyway, I have looked at some articles describing this technology. If you want to use it to generate power, it obviously have to create some updraft and then you need to extract power from it, which means, that you will form a restriction. My main concern would be, that you would not be able to restrict airflow enough to extract meaningful amount of power, due to material collapsing under pressure. This should be possible to calculate. Then also question would be whether there would be issues with water condensing as wet air would rises up. Honestly, to me photovoltaic technology looks like better deal. But I haven't done any meaningful amount of research on this topic.

It is, I have built bunch of stuff with this setup. One limitation is, that electrolyte heats up, so after 1h of continuous runtime it is very hot. That means, that it needs regulation, which simple diac (like for drills) works well. I run this at ~1KW and can smelt 32mm diameter 2mm thick tubes just barely. 2kW would be better. But no need for storing gasses :)

im not sure but i do not think this is aluminum oxide, if it is, its very contaminated with aluminum, sodium ions and hydroxide ions, a better way is to react aluminium with hydrochloric acid (try to get the amount of aluminum as close as the molar proportions of the reaction) and then add sodium hydroxide to neutralize the excess hcl and to convert the aluminum chloride into aluminium hydroxide, try to add an excess of naoh to really make sure that everything is neutralized/reacted. Now add water to aluminum hydroxide slurry and filter it, then wash it a few more times with water and refilter, finally, put the aluminum hydroxide in an oven at the highest temperature you can for as long as you can (~250C for 1-2h is more than enough), then just powder the stuff you dried, since aluminum hydroxide decomposes upon heating, youll get a bunch of pretty pure aluminum oxide ready to use

guess i'm late to the punch pointing out its sodium aluminate but thats even cooler in a way. Sodium Aluminate Wiki: "In water treatment it is used as an adjunct to water softening systems, as a coagulant aid to improve flocculation, and for removing dissolved silica and phosphates. In construction technology, sodium aluminate is employed to accelerate the solidification of concrete, mainly when working during frost. Sodium aluminate is also used in the paper industry, for fire brick production, alumina production and so forth. Sodium aluminate solutions are intermediates in the production of zeolites." "Sodium aluminate is formed by the action of sodium hydroxide on elemental aluminium which is an amphoteric metal. The reaction is highly exothermic once established and is accompanied by the rapid evolution of hydrogen gas. The reaction is sometimes written as: 2Al + 2NaOH + 2H2O → 2NaAlO2 + 3H2 However, the species produced in solution is likely to contain the [Al(OH)4]− ion or perhaps the [Al(H2O)2(OH)4]− ion.["

@@IlusysSystems I know how that goes. SO much of my equipment is trashed. I started a company that did analysis for some of the large companies in early 200'0s. I made the decision to go back to school for my PhD in chemical engineering and everything either got broken or was out in the barn too close to the weather. I was able to save my HPLC as well as my Bucchi Rotovaps but I suppose everything else can be replaced. I am starting a gourmet and medicinal mushroom business with my best friend/partner in Delaware and I will be using the HPLC as well as extraction apparatus. At school I was friends with the glassblower that repaired all of the broken stuff that was worth repairing. He taught me a great deal but I probably forgot most of it. My specialty is organo-metal transition catalysts. It is easier to start my own company than to find a position where I would use my specialty. If it helps I've gone through the same shit. eventually EEG's showed my brain never entering REM but it's beyond that and has something to do with my circadian rhythms. their solution was zopiclone. a hypnotic similar to the a chemical in the amanita muscaria mushroom. you can get EEG equipment cheap now on ali to do a sleep study on yourself but might i suggest, sleep when you're tired. eat when you're hungry. forget about society telling you when those things should occur. I typically only sleep 20 minutes to an hour at a time and frequently not at all for 2 or 3 days. maybe not normal compared to the majority but it's my normal. maybe you're normal too. just make note when you might be going crazy from lack of sleep and don't do chemistry unless you've slept. little rules like that make it easier not to screw life up. otherwise maybe change how you look at it. it doesn't have to be a problem. top notch data collection btw and i love your willingness to guinea pig yourself while not promoting others do the same. I'm about to try and make glass frit from your other vid for an electrochemical cell membrane :)
@IlusysSystems
@IlusysSystems 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for suggestions. I did try hypnotics about 10 years ago (Stilnox/Zolpidem, similar chemical), but the result was, that they did not help me sleep. Well actually, part of my brain did sleep, but other did not :D In other words I did hallucinate a bunch with loss of coordination. I am pretty sure I do enter REM though. Don't have EEG yet, but just aiming "night vision" camera at me during night shows patterns consistent with REM. Same with pulse oxymetry data. But definitely will have to confirm this. Recently I got blood glucose monitor, which shows lower than normal levels. One theory is, that paralysis could be due to that, but I am waiting for really bad ones to check. Also during autumn/winter I want to get off the nicotine. In any case, glass frit would probably work as membrane, but try shower curtain! You know, the densly woven one, not extruded plastic. You may be surprised how good it is :)
