It's a bottomless spiral... I was watching chemplayer's vid on this subject, and I think I followed his advice well, but in the end my yield was nearly negative.

Dude I love your creativity in your chem videos. Making your own glassware is an amazing touch to it!

I remember making some benzene from PET plastic When you pyrolize it you get something similar to what you get And then you have to redistill it for pure_ness (if that's a word) So technically it's not a fail you just need a large scale because there is alot of side reactions and byproducts

Is sodium benzoate not available as a food preservative in your country? Anyway, I have made calcium benzoate before and the solubility is fairly low, a better approach would have been to make concentrated solutions of sodium benzoate and calcium chloride and mixing them, it precipitates fast and in high yield in a matter of minutes. The solubility of the earth alkali benzoates seems to increase when you go down the group (can't say anything about magnesium benzoate). From the benzoates of calcium, strontium and barium, barium seemed to be the most and calcium the least soluble, mirroring the solubility of their oxalates (the benzoates are muuuuch more soluble than the oxalates of course).

Can you displace sodium ions by calcium like this? Hmmmm actually nevermind, balance favors sodium chloride more obviously... Well Live and learn... I probably could buy sodium benzoate, and probably I will, because it's quite useful for reaction like this, but looking at this small scale experiment I would need to buy benzophenone anyway when I will need it, which sucks a bit.

@@IlusysSystems You can buy just benzophenone itself: cymitquimica.com/products/02-A10739/119-61-9/benzophenone/

I wonder what is that calcium hydroxide supposed to be used for xD The chickens made it interesting

It's for egg preservation. Similar to sodium silicate

lol calcium chloride crashes out calcium benzoate and you need to roast tons with acetate to make relatively small quantities of funny aromatic ketone #1
