Hi! Is it okay to not get the fat out of the toe paw pads? I am bark tanning so I know it's a bit different but I was wondering if I am supposed to open them from the inside or something.. I was thinking of trying to do the alcohol then borax solution when I pull it out of the tannin bath just in case.

I had been watching your Rabbit taxidermy videos (fantastic!) But now I need to know how to preserve the hide. Do you use the same process as this? What chemical was the first one? (Don't know the brand product you used!) Do you need any oil during the stretching?

And usually in the armpit area! Unless you have a really thin skinned or thin furred animal with lots of vein and muscle detail, there's no need to glue the whole form!

This is my current obsession rn, love the video. I dont see many people doing soft mounts with rabbits, is there a reason for that?

Probably cause they're really thin skinned and can tear easily.

is it better frozen or fresh? most of the normal skinning videos ive seen did it fresh since it was easier to manipulate, but it looks like the skin pulls cleaner when its frozen. is there one or the other that you find works better?

Is the oil you mentioned tanning oil - if so I was under the impression you had to let that sit over night to get the hide fully tanned. Also what is your opinion on using bondo in the ears instead of glue. Is the glue you used special for taxidermy or is it wood glue
@Taxidermy101 Жыл бұрын
It is tanning oil yes. The guy I learned it from has been doing it this way for 30+ years and none of his mounts cracked or had any issues. Just be generous with the oil and you will see it soak right in. The glue I use in this video if just wood glue. Honestly, I've found it works just as good or better than hide paste.

I’ve always loved taxidermy and never did it other than euromount. I just got a bunch of new meat rabbits and I think I’m going to try a soft mount. Probably on one of the more plain ones and then when I’m better at it, one of the harlequins. Thanks for the incredibly informative video with encouragement. Oh my mom did the same thing. Sad story. There was a rabbit stuck in the neighbor's water pipe (the thing that gutters lead to). Stuck inside. Poor rabbit. So when my mom was trying to save it the tail just kinda came off. My mom felt so terrible about it. Rabbits are so delicate. I'm so glad your tailless rabbit was alright after.

I purchased a raw rabbit online that started to smell when i got it as it was a super hot day and the ice pack melted. I put it in the freezer right away. Can I still do this or is it spoiled? You can only smell it from right up close. Is there any extra step I should take, maybe an alcohol soak before doing this? Thank you!
@Taxidermy101 Жыл бұрын
If you start to skin it and you notice any greenness or sour smell its toast. Rabbits are super fragile. I'd still give it a try though!

Just got a marmot and I think their pelt are beautiful so I wanted to get everything, messed up the tail a little but sewed it up best I could. Watched a video about half a year back saying you needed to get the the third knuckle so I tried that and it was impossible with something that small, thank you for this video because it made me realize that’s just idealistic and less important with super small animals. Thanks again, great video!

I'm new to trapping, but I got a lynx on my 1st set... I plan to tan it but I want to keep the pads and claws on, I already skinned it, but I left the legs just like in your video. Once I cut the rest of the foot, I just salt the inside of it? What about when I start tanning it? Get the solution in there as well? It won't rot or damage the pelt?
@Taxidermy101 Жыл бұрын
Yes exactly! Make sure you get a generous amount of salt inside each paw pad. When you tan it, same thing applies, pay attention to the pads and make sure all the solutions/oil get inside the pads and work them really hard in the final drying stage as they stiffen more than the other skin. Nothing will rot as long as you flesh them out properly.
