Is it really necessary to remove the original paint when it's still in perfect condition (just the wrong color)? Can't I just rough it up a bit with sand paper and then paint over it?

Scraping is great for steel frames. I use a good heat gun and a putty knife. The semi-sharpness and hardness of the steel putty knife smoothly and easily scrapes heated paint off the frame. there are many lines and scraps of paint but no dust. If you do it uniformly, there is very little sanding to do. You just have to use finesse and an angle to the putty knife and be patient because you don't scrape until the paint is very hot.

I like buying very strict tolerance basically everlasting stuff like calipers as high-end, but in general for basic tools I just buy the budget/aliexpress stuff and then I use them. Then the ones that turn out to be made out of gummi bear I just recycle and replace with higher quality tools. The ones that don't wear out or break I continue using. It's worth it refining the set a bit like this when aliexpress is around 3x - 10x cheaper than local stores here in Finland. But things that could be dangerous if they are strange like pressured stuff or high voltage and lubes/greases, I buy those from trusted EU shops.

Hey, i made a mistake of painting my motorcycle with a 1k primer. Its been around 3 days and it still feels not fully dry. Sanding the primer makes it cake the sandpaper, but when i push on it really hard it does not leave any finger marks. Can i paint 2k acrylic paint over it or should i completely strip it off and prime it with 2k primer?
@MYnextDIYbikePROJECT2 ай бұрын
Sounds strange that a 1k primer would not be dry after a few days. But for best adhesion (on steel) I would remove the old paint and lay down a 2k epoxy direct to the metal. To remove 1k paint, all you need is some thinner and wipe it off. 👌

Thank you, really useful videos! At what stage is it better to apply ammonium chloride? I watched the other video, and you degrease the frame prior to priming. Im presuming the following stages: 1. Sanding down 2. Ammonium Chloride 3. Degrease prior primer 4. Primer 5. Paint 6. Clear coat Also, will this work on the aluminium frame with some oxidation under the paint? @MYnextDIYbikePROJECT3 ай бұрын
I paint on the logos and Graphics with stencils instead of decal stickers. Makes a much more professional and durable finish. They can be painted on directly on the base coat or in between two layers of clear coat. The first layer needs to be fully cured and sanded for the paint to stick. 👌

I didn't press edges down hard and used very low tack tape... My base colour must have been too thick/not fully cured?? even after about 3 days drying.

I really like the gold with the moose on the inside of the fork. The little details like this really make it look more custom. I found it interesting that you ended up in the position where the whole bike was sprayed with gloss coat. May have saved some time if you'd gloss cleared the decals you'd just painted in gold before removing all the masking. Then given you had to mask up the gold decals to paint the green areas that had got scratched, you could've sprayed mat clear over that area straight away. Either way glad you're happy with the outcome!
