Great job. I especially liked how you showed that you had some orange peel that needed to be corrected to really make the bike look amazing. I sanded out the orange peel on my bikes, but lazily skipped the step of cutting and buffing with power tools. I did it by hand, which was satisfying but I feel the end result would've been better if I had done it with tools. Overall, the result was decent on the bikes, the Cannondale Delta V and Super V from 1994 that I have in short video's on my channel, but I want to improve on them. I am currently in the process of tearing down and stripping the paint off of the Super V to repaint it again. Thanks for the inspiration.

Thanks! Yes, the power tools made a huge difference. I tried by hand on a test pipe and realized that it would be a ton of work and still wouldn’t be as good as I wanted. 👍

*New Subscriber* That was very interesting. I had no idea that orange peel can be eliminated from paint with polishing. A friend bought a new BMW a couple of years ago, and the orange peel on some concave curves is bad. I didn't mention it to him, but I would have been very unhappy with it. Looking forward to catching up on more of your videos. All the best, and greetings from Prague, CZ

Thanks. Yes, the orange peel is absolutely possible to get rid of, but its a lot of work, so you always want to lay down the clear coat as smooth as possible. 👌

The wite is an 2k epoxy primer from a local hardware store. Don’t know the brand. But most of the stuff I use now is MIPA paint. The purple is a Candy color from SEM in Mipa transparent intercoat.

You mention you did not have the spray gun set up 100%, leading to the orange peel. Can you explain at all what it was with the setup that was not quite right? End result looked stunning, well done.
@MYnextDIYbikePROJECT Жыл бұрын
Well, it’s was probably a combination of settings. The clear might have needed a little bit more thinning and then it’s the pressure that could have been tuned a bit more. Finally I think the cap on the gun was a bit clogged so the air didn’t flow perfectly and that effect the pattern. This is the difference between spray guns and cans, it’s a ton of settings and you simply have to practice a lot and get to know your gear and materials. 😅👌

How much pressure do you have in your pistol? 1 in the silver, in the purple candy 3 in the clear coat, and how much pressure on your airbrush, your work looks super 🤯🔥🔥
@MYnextDIYbikePROJECT Жыл бұрын
Hi, and thanks. I follow the technical data sheet and then final adjustments on a test panel, but around 2 bar/29psi. For the airbrush a bit lower. Perhaps around 1.5 bar/21psi. However, since I rarely do freehand work (i just fill in stencils) I keep it higher than for freehand.

Really nice paint job. Just out of interest how would you compare going from rattle can to spray gun? Thanks
@MYnextDIYbikePROJECT9 ай бұрын
Thanks! Well, to begin with, it takes both a lot more gear, obviously. And it takes time to learn. I practiced quite a lot before put the first paint on the bike frame. I made several test tubes to learn how to dial in the pressure, fluid and fan. Conclusion is that if you are going to paint one bike, go with the cans. If you’re planning to paint many, it’s worth to get the gear and learn. 👌

great work, ive applied my first wet coat of clear and have some orange peel. Should I wait 24 hours, wet sand with 1000 grit, then reapply a final layer of clear coat? And how do you clean the frame after wet sanding before applying the final clear coat layer? thank you!
@MYnextDIYbikePROJECT10 ай бұрын
Thanks. Yes, wait at least 24h, if it’s not room temperature, wait 48h+. Sand it with 800-1000. Clean it with detergent, rinse, wipe and let it cure. Before spraying, clean with wax and grease remover (wear gloves) and use a tac rag in the end to remove any lint and dust! 👌

Great job! I really like your videos they are awesome. I want to spray paint my first bike soon and I have 2 questions: 1. Im going to a media blasting company to get my aluminium frame cleaned. Do I still have to clean the frame with this ammonium solution you showed in one of your videos or is it ready to go after the media blast? 2. Do I have to wet sand after applying the primer before using the first layer of color or do I have to sand before using the clear coat in the end? Thank you so much for your help in advance.
@MYnextDIYbikePROJECT Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! Yes, the aluminum reacts to oxygen in the air and a nano thin layer of oxidization, that causes the bad adhesion. So by rubbing it with ammonia yo remove oxidized layer. When it comes to sanding, you need to sand 2k primer if it has cured for more than 24h in normal room temperature. 1k base pain should not be sanded (unless you get a run). 2k clear should be sanded if/when you apply it in two rounds with at least 24h of drying in between. I hope that will help. Good luck with your project. 👌

@@MYnextDIYbikePROJECT i just discovered another big problem maybe you have experience with it... Is there any way how to remove powder coating paint from your bike DIY? My local media blaster told me it has to be removed before he can blast the frame... He offered me to bring it to a company but they charge me about 100€ for it and that's above my budget...
@MYnextDIYbikePROJECT Жыл бұрын
@@Babolatplayer I was unaware that powder coating can’t be sandblasted. In that case you can either remove the paint by hand (se how i do it in the video below). Or, you rough up the paint with a 600g sandpaper and lay down a 2k epoxy primer/sealer. In that way, you don’t have to use the ammonia.kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYHYgGecab6il9Esi=wI9owjfR8En-d-7l

Can you compare the clear coat to a usual clear? Is it a lot more scratch resistent?
@MYnextDIYbikePROJECT Жыл бұрын
I don’t compare, I just read the spec/info about the product. However “usual” clear coat is hard to define. 1K clear is not in the same league as 2k automotive clear coat. And, according to the manufacturer, this clear coat is extra scratch resistant. So far I’ve ridden the bike 500 km and cleaned it on a regular basis. So far it looks great. 👌

which small size spray gun would be great to paint a cycle or any small paint job.. would a 0.5 spray gun be good please guide..
@MYnextDIYbikePROJECT11 ай бұрын
I personally use a 1.0mm for base coat and a 1.2mm for clear coat. A 0.5 would probably do the job, but take some time as you will apply less volume of paint with every passing. I use mini/touch up guns as they are easy to work with in the tight corners and angles. I also prefer lvlp guns as my compressor is small. 👌
