it's cool to see Compile get mentioned on this list; it's worth noting that many of the devs that went and formed Raizing and developed Sorcer Striker were originally from Compile, so some of the studio's DNA ends up in some of those earlier Raizing games.

I've always really liked the Raiden series but was totally surprised and blown away when I eventually played the Raiden Fighters Aces collection on the Xbox 360; all the games were easily as-good (but turned up to 11). Had never heard of them before that! Great video!

Aside from the "undisputed king of shmups is undoubtably the Sega Saturn" comment (I grew up Sega as well but it's obvious to any shmup fan that the PC Engine/Turbografx makes that "undoubtably" part a complete lie since every single time this topic or poll shows up it's a super close race between the saturn and the PC Engine, even though I only became aware of the PC Engine in my late 20s, it's clearly a huge contender/challenger) and the fact you completely failed to mention how utterly broken the Saturn Dodonpachi port is, this was quality content! You've earned yourself a sub, my dude! Even though I personally find it sacriligeous to see Batsugun ranked so low! :D

Someone bought my local laser quest, (some chain called LaserMaxx i think?), and they must've been nostalgic, because they only updated the sensor packs/laser guns as far as i can tell. They seemingly didn't touch much otherwise. I can't wait until my kids are old enough for a family visit. Thank you for this video. I stumbled upon it recently and I appreciate the knowledge that im not the only one with a surprisingly strong emotional attachment to a business/building haha. In all seriousness though, that place was filled with countless memories of unparalleled joy and heart-pounding excitement from the first time i went there as a young child and it still remains a source of extremely heartfelt nostalgia for me. Maybe it's just the memories talking, but I've tried several other laser tag businesses and i can honestly say that no other experience I've tried can even hold a candle to the fully immersive experience of laser quest. It was the source of the kind of memories that will continue to vividly retain their shape through all 5 of the human senses for the rest of my life. I can still close my eyes and touch, see, hear, and smell everything, and i can even taste the crappy pizza they served at birthday parties and the fog machines and the smoky air it produced tickling and chilling my lungs for a split second.

hi if anyone is reading this, my family & I discovered that Laser Land in Mission Viejo OC turnkeyed the old Laser Tag that used to be there and they kept a lot of the original interior, it was so cool! the guys who work there are also fans of the old Laser Quest, so definitely support them in keeping the fun alive~ Highly recommend if you're missing Laser Quest 🫶🏻

3:26 Oh, I know MI wasn't lauded; it just happened to be the one my relatives owned. It seems easier to control than others, but the AI is so damned aggressive that I've never beaten the final boss, Duke, with any of the characters I tried. If it'll be remembered for anything, it's my not beating it and having my favorite portrayal of Athena.

If this game looks interesting to you, check out Crimson Skies (released on PC in 2000, my guess is Propeller Arena was heavily inspired by this game) and Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge (one of the best early Xbox Live games for the original Xbox that people still rave about with fond memories).

I think there are game play and "lore" reasons for Venom I and II. First keep in mind that you are locked into which one you get the level before. Means for Venom I you just had the fight on the satellite (possibly including a weak Star Wolf) while Venom II had you go through Area 6, which is massive and IMO one of the best ones. That means you basically had the defenses before you got to Venom II, while Venom I has them on the planet. The lack of other enemies and resources also means that you go into the Venom II fight in whatever state you came out of area 6. Lost your wings? Guess you fight this one with one green laser only. It also gives you little to prepare for Andross (if you don't plan ahead carefully you'll fight him with the small health bar). From a lore perspective, Andross went through the effort to make a Decoy on the Venom I side. This one is obviously heavily guarded, which would make one think that all these resources protect the real one. The real one however, trying to not draw attention is protected by an elite team that is on stand-by, only showing up when protection is needed. Seeing the last two stages as one closing chapter, it makes a lot more sense to me because individually speaking, Venom I is much more fun than Venom II (but also less challenging, sometimes difficulty is overrated).

i'm years late to this video, but i'm enjoying it... once i have enough money to buy the Steam version i really am going to play it! i'm here to recommend Hellsinker. it's not 1:1 to Radiant Silvergun but it's equally a unique experience. 4 characters, each has incredible variations in terms of their options much like RS. unique stage design, actual good story behind wacky prose, and THREE scoring systems that... i don't even know how to start describing it. very very unique shmup experience and so far my favorite shmup ever, with Ikaruga right behind. the order might change once i try RS out though, who knows! there's also Akashicverse, it's inspired by Hellsinker i believe. you control a ship with 10 different abilities called "methods" that you can use by performing fighting-game like input sequences. really fun and really wacky, it feels like the game is throwing everything to kill you but you're also overpowered and it's a battle between an immovable object vs an unstoppable force.

Hey this video you did on the SHMUPS is perfect! I LOVE playing SHMUPS! (Especially on the Saturn!) I LOVE the parodius series (mainly because it reminds me of being a kid at Chuck E. Cheese playing that simpsons arcade game!) Same with twinbee Dodonpachi is AWSOME! (Kind of forgot I got gunbird but that too is pretty good!) Same with Darius and gradius! Radiant silvergun (another classic on the Saturn) And Salamander I remember getting because I was rewarded the deluxe pack plus while I was house sitting for my family! (That was such a WEIRD week to survive with!)

Interesting ranking, my top 5 would probably be Raiden DX- Raiden Fighters 2- Raiden IV - Raiden - Raiden II. DX mostly is at the top since you can optimize flashing medal/miculus collection & works pretty well for the revamped levels for scoring.

Definitely the game any KOF fans would recommend to any newcomer to the series. I would say XIV and XV is much better overall gameplay but looks are the single important factor for any new player so I would throw that out and 98UM and 02 UM are dated for new player as well.

It will always haunt me that when I first got into collecting for the SEGA CD, a local store in my area actually had a CIB copy of this. By the time I researched the game and decided I actually wanted it, I went to go pick it up and it was gone. That was in the days of flat prices for any game on the shelf, I think their SEGA CD games were $10 to $20 at most.
