Especially since you are in the wrong contract, you should hope that the hearts don’t split. So you should play spades and hope the opponents misplay after you draw trumpets. You can then play diamonds and if the hearts were 4-1, if hand lead is in the hand that doesn’t have hearts it’s endplayed and must give you a ruff and discard, or that that hand has hearts, it’s must lead away from the Jack, or give a ruff and discard. Now you are making 4 clubs while 4 hearts is down one.

On the first hand, east should not pass 2H but bid 2S, the level of the fit. -50 is better than -110 or even -140 on this layout.
@oasisbridgetuition25 күн бұрын
Yes, this should work, but difficult to bid as this Acol opening of 1S only promises a 4-card suit.
@d95mback2 ай бұрын
I don't see why east would lead the queen of clubs. You'll not have time to ruff clubs and you are just sparing declarer a guess. Safest exit is probably a (high) trump hoping partner has a spade honour.

I didnt understand how North will know that partner has 5 hearts. Doesnt South just need a 4 card major to bid the first time?
@oasisbridgetuition4 ай бұрын
Yes, you’re right. On the last hand, South opened 1H which shows just 4 cards in the suit. However, when South rebids 2C (or any 2nd suit) then it shows partner 5 or more cards in Hearts and 4 or more in the 2nd suit. To Open 1H and rebid 2H also shows a 5-card suit.

My apologies, what means duck in bridge?
@oasisbridgetuition6 ай бұрын
Not at all - thanks for asking! To duck a trick means to play a low card and lose the trick, rather than playing a higher card to win the trick. Sometimes it can be good to ‘duck’ a trick early on, saving your winning cards for later in the play. I hope this helps.

I sometimes wonder how openers are meant to handle overcalls - do they adjust their bids, or just not bid if the bidding has gone too high?
@oasisbridgetuition6 ай бұрын
If opponents bid 1H over partner’s 1D for example, you can still bid 1S, but it’s difficult if you are forced to bid higher than planned, so consider the strength of your hands vs opponents. Options are to bid as normal, pass if that isn’t possible (remember that partner has chance to bid again), or a ‘negative double’ can be a useful bid.
@truist76 ай бұрын
This was a great treatment of overcalls, which have been hard for me to understand. Thank you! I wonder about takeout doubles, though - isn’t that also a form of overcall?
@oasisbridgetuition6 ай бұрын
Yes, you’re quite right, takeout doubles are overcalls - I haven’t included takeouts here as it’s a little early to introduce them at this stage.
@truist76 ай бұрын
That’s been one of the hardest parts of trying to learn bridge online or from books - every source jumps straight into all the complexity, so you have a million edge cases to learn right from the start. I really appreciate how you have been covering “just the basics”.

With a 1NT overcall, is the 'stop' in the opponents suit any honour or AK/Q?
@oasisbridgetuition6 ай бұрын
Good question! A stop is a card that can win a trick in the suit, so A, Kx, Qxx, or more risky, Jxxx can potentially be a stop. For 1NT overcalls you need a stop in the opponents suit so you don’t completely lose control of the suit.

It is possible p has zero points but five hearts, would he not transfer then stop?
@oasisbridgetuition6 ай бұрын
Thanks for this question. Yes - if the partnership has agreed to play transfers, as they are an optional convention. Natural bids are used here for beginners/improvers.
@sueburke23076 ай бұрын
Would you use stayman and red suit transfers after a 1nt overcall?
@sueburke23076 ай бұрын
Sorry I hadn’t watched the video to the end. This was a very useful lesson. Thanks
@oasisbridgetuition6 ай бұрын
You can agree with partner to play Stayman and Transfers over a 1NT overcall (called ‘systems on’) or play two of a suit as a natural weak bid (systems off!) I prefer to keep 2-level (unbid) suit bids as a natural take-out bid with a weak hand. Either way, if opponents interfere after the 1NT overcall, it’s usual for all systems to be ‘off’.

Hi Maggie, thanks for another great video, but I’m puzzled as to why East would lead the club queen at trick 3 of the second example? Wasn’t that a mistake on their part?
@oasisbridgetuition6 ай бұрын
Thanks Bob. Yes I’d prefer to play the 4, seeing KJ in dummy - although the Q is a loser anyway on this layout, so I don’t think it makes a difference to the end score.
@michaelkingsbury43056 ай бұрын
I'm just a beginner but how would that have played in 2NT?
@oasisbridgetuition6 ай бұрын
Good question Michael, thank you. You're right that NS can make 2NT on this hand, the problem is that they have no real options to arrive at the bid. A rebid of 1NT or 2NT by North would show a stronger hand of 15 - 17 points and if South was tempted to raise to 3NT the contract would go down one.
@KimiiiRaikkonen6 ай бұрын
I don't think Jumping to 3c as strong is common. I think all pairs at my local club play inverted minor. 2c is forcing and strong, and 3c is pre empt. in my partnership both are pre-empts, as we play transfers, there's other ways to show strong hands :) but as basic, I would recommend every play to not play 3c as strong, same in 1M-3M. Never play it as invitational 10-11. It's much better to bid a 2minor first, then bid 3M. Jumping should be weak, strong hands bids slow. Opener can jump to show strength, that's fine :) I think 1c-1h 2h-4h would be the best bid if you are playing basic (you are probably going to mention it later in the video, but I wanted to get in my thoughts early :) ) In transfers we would bid 1c-1d* 1h-2d 2h-4h. The contract would be in north, you would probably get 8c lead, won't really change anything. you got 3 losers. 1 spade and 2 diamonds both way. so even score with the field here in both systems :)
@oasisbridgetuition5 ай бұрын
Interesting, many thanks for this. The video is aimed at beginners/improvers so uses basic bridge bidding.

What is the difference between playing acol and 5 card major? Thank you
@oasisbridgetuition7 ай бұрын
Thank you Anita- an important question. Acol: opening bid of 1NT shows a balanced hand with 12 - 14 points. Standard: it shows 15 - 17 points. Acol: opening bid of 1 of a major shows 4 (or more) cards in the suit. Standard: it shows 5 (or more) cards in the major suit.
@KimiiiRaikkonen7 ай бұрын
Personally. I love 4414. It's an amazing shape as it bot both majors covered, you can support both. me and my partner open this hand at 11hp :) We also open the 4441 in 1club as we play transfers.. if you play transfer you can even open the 3451 and 4351 shape in 1club as we only need 3 card to support at the 1 level in transfer. In normal system I would for sure open 4441, 3451 and 4351 in 1 diamond :). I disagree at 2:47. at the one level over club openings we can't be that strict with lengths. I would bid in normal system. a hand like 4432 as 1c - 1d then bid 1h. in club openings, you don't promise club length unless you rebid it, or reverse/jump.. . It's the dustbin for opening hands without shape
@KimiiiRaikkonen7 ай бұрын
ouf.. I really don't like the 4heart bid directly. You might miss slam opportunities by not letting partner show their strength. Opener is uncapped in this auction, and will be having alot of trouble with strong hands. I would prefer 2diamond if you play xyz. (2c invite, 2d forcing after 3 one level bids) If not, just bid 4th suit. let partner describe more of their hand. You might discover if you have 2 quick losers without bidding 4NT!. In this hand above it would not matter as Opener is not strong. but it will generate alot of minus points when opener is strong, and especially in Imp across the field where good opponents have systems for a slow auction to discover Slam values. 6 hearts = 980, or 1430 vulnerable. 4hearts +2 are 480 or 680 if vulnerable. That's 11-13 imp swing, just because of the unnescessary jump to 4H. You do also have the case where partner is strong, but you did not let him bid key cards, and now have to gamble with his strong opener. he bids 4NT and ends in 6hearts which loses to f.example AK of clubs. Which in the other auctions they found out in the bidding that they miss club control. Let's give opener AJT6-KQT2-A-QJ94 1c - 1d 1h - 2d (with xyz which I play, that has 1st priority!) 2s - 3h (Sets the suit, 2d is forcing and now partner is allowed to start cue if he wants) 3s - 4h (Now opener knows partner does not have any control in clubs or diamonds, and will easily just pass 4h. if partner has singleton, A, or Kx he would bid 4c. If the auction went like this with AJT6-KQT2-A-QJ94 1c-1d 1h-4h I would not have any room to discover missing controls, and I would gambled on bidding 4NT. partner shows 1 ace, and I would bid 6h. There is no room for me to discover AK missing. If you do not play xyz, I'm not really sure how to bid this hand.. I would bid something like this 1c - 1d 1h - 2sp (which is dangerous, it can be missleading and understood as Splinter. not to worry in this case, but I need something that's forcing) 3c? - With a good partner, 3h, he must understand I'm strong here, with a weak partner that might pass. I bid 4h to atleast not miss game.. it's very hard to bid with good slam discovering auctions with people you don't know. they might pass in the wrong places! Xyz is a superior system, it's so much easier to bid. I like systems that let me bid my hands, not awkward like this last messy auction. Sorry for super long comment!. I love bridge, I love that you try to teach other to play bridge. We need more bridge players!! I envy you old people for being born earlier when bridge were even a thing in school. I love cards way more than computer games! 😃😃😃

Me and my partner is playing 2/1. And we do have alot of ways to upgrade a hand into 1nt. Good 5card suits might even be upgraded all the way down to 4points. so a real dustbin bid for us. 4-12hp :) Only way partner is allowed to pass it, is if they have a minimum hand that does not make game towards a 11-12pointer. if you do have chance towards game, it's forcing :) Both systems have it pros and cons. I think it's nice to mention something called Canapé. If It goes 1S-1NT 2H-3D It would be a long diamond suit. probably like 7+ or very good 6+. to not support or pass partners bid. It's also not forcing, as if we had the strong part of our 1NT. (the 10-12p) with the strong hands around 11-12 should have GF value against partners continuing range. If it's a very distributional hand like 55 in the majors. partner can bid 4H after my 3NT bid. and force me to pick. In normal system you can bid your 1Sp-2h with your 54xx and weak 11-12points. but not in our system. It's pretty mixed between 10+ and 2/1 from my experience. :) Also fun to sometime get a different contract than the field we play against. as we sometimes stop in 1NT where the field plays in 2H or 2S. I love 1NT contracts. they are fun and exciting. So much endplaying and tricks to do. Love to work on the bidding system.
