i have a 96 F350 Dually Super Crew with a brand new rebuilt 460. it's bored .030 over. i have a 3 core all aluminum radiator in it and the engine only has 50 miles on it. it runs too hot. i dont know why. i changed the fan from a clutch fan to a dual electric and it still doesnt stop it from running too hot. i do wish i could figure it out. i love that truck and would like to drive it again. another thing, i have the original engine on the engine stand in the shop with 265,000 miles on it. it started to run warm and i assumed it was worn out so i built a new engine and put it in the truck just for it to run even warmer. i've measured the temp at 240F at the water outlet. if anyone has any ideas, im all ears. also. i pulled the heads to see if i installed one of the head gaskets backward... i didnt. they are both correct. in fact, you can literally see the word "front" on the gaskets at the front of the heads.

What type of transmission is in my Lincoln with the 6.6 engine? I live in New Mexico and Im trying to find a mechanic to work on it. So far. Dead ends. No one wants to work on my car

Brothers and I swapped a 255 from a Capri into Dad's tired old Monarch in place of the 302 that was well worn. It was lighter, and mostly a bolt-in. OTOH, at startup it wanted to jump out of the engine bay. Apparently the C4 flex plate would not work. We had to replace the flex plate with new, and find a transmission with a troque converter that would bolt to the flex plate. We found one and it was also a different diameter. It got pretty good gas mileage and lasted voer a dozen years until it got rear ended while parked by a DUI./ It really ran nice ans smooth, and had more power than a '75 302, or at least Dad's. One thing easy to note is the open valley on the 255 while a 302 had a closed valley.

Fox Cougars and Thunderbirds progressively replaced the D code 4.2 V8 with the interchangeable Code 3 3.8 Essex 90° V6, which was C5 equipped with AOD an XR7 standard option. They used the same Duraspark II distributor body adaptor in the first year, same exhaust primary lightoff and long bed catalyst, same unbalance, same automatic transmissions, although the early V6 used a stay support on the early Fox K member. Then, in 1983 to 1986, the C5 was the only gearbox option...no SR4OD or AOD in Fox Mustangs or Capris, but mandatory with C5 in Cougar XR7s and Thunderbirds. The peak power of the non Central Fuel Injection 1982-1983 MCU 3.8 versions used the same solid state controls and induction as a 4.2 V8, just a different calibration. At just over 400 pounds for the , verses a quoted 307 pounds stripped fir the 3.8 V6, Ford pared away a lot of weight, and the V6 suffered a poor long term leak free reliability, with front accessory drive bolts difficult to access, alloy head particulate deposites and head gasket leaks and a funky 3 way sensor EGR and manifold water supply port of a strange taper and these two parts are difficult to service. When catalysts are blocked, later Central Fuel Injection EECIV cars are difficult to diagnose, with a unique one way DC motor Idle control, not a TFi idle advance control like in the HO CFi 5.0. So..lots of new tech, that Ford didn't really solve until the retempered Dual Port headed 3.8 liter 1997 engines in rear drive applications. And, with the suspect automatic transmission in Front drive Taurii, maybee never fixed. The 4.2 F150 engine, that rocked. Maybee the best way of finding a M5OD 4.2 90° V six for a 5.8 EFi transplant in a slope nose is to find an old 4.2 Five speed truck . Because its still got the old Windsor 5.8/351W transmission bolt pattern and dual mass flywheel. Love your stuff.🥝✔️

Hey everyone, I need to issue a correction about something I said regarding the 3.8L Essex V6 and its bellhousing bolt pattern. After doing more research, I’ve learned that the RWD Essex V6 (like the versions used in Fox-body Mustangs) does in fact share the small-block Ford (SBF) bolt pattern. This means that transmissions designed for the 302 and other Windsor V8s will bolt up to the RWD Essex without needing an adapter. However, the FWD versions of the Essex V6 (like those used in Tauruses and Windstars) have a different bolt pattern that is not compatible with the SBF. This was a big oversight on my part, and I appreciate the commenters who pointed it out. I always strive to provide accurate information, so I’m grateful for your patience and understanding while I correct this mistake. Thanks for keeping me honest!

Another situation 😕 That nobody discussed is. The V-6 engine plants 🪴 working at 100% and could Not produce anymore engines. But the V-8 engine plants 🪴 working at 50%. So Ford just produced tiny V-8 🤔 To move engine production 🤔 to the V-8 plants. Also to keep workers employed.

The 3.8 rwd has the same bellhousing as the small block windsors. I have removed a 3.8 and bolted a 302 right to the existing c5 in a foxbody. The FWD is different i believe.

Both GM and Ford offered economy based 3.8 liter v6 options, with GM having two, in Buick 231 or Chevy 229, which my 83 Impala has, and I absolutely love it! It will take the car to any posted speed limit, and top out over 90. Dead solid reliable, and allows the car to average 22 MPG. I'm not sure how the Ford Essex 3.8 would do, but I'd imagine it's a solid engine, in and of itself.

In defense of the 255, it wasnt a bad engine at all when compared to its contemporaries. The thing is, its contemporaries were 6 cylinders, not v8s. Im unaware of Chrysler, AMC, or GM attempting a v8 that small. But compared to say a 4.2L Buick wildcat v6 (125 hp, 205 ft-lb), or an AMC 258 (110 hp, 210 ft-lb) that were being built at the same time, the 255 is exactly on par. Even compared to the 1985 4.3 chevy v6, (130 hp, 210 ft-lb) the 255 doesnt fare bad, especially adjusted for displacement. Ford chose to downsize the 302 instead of developing 6. Im not sure the reasons. Perhaps because the 240/300 i6 was heavier than a 302 already and they were actively trying to phase out the "small block" i6 at this point. It probably just made more sense to cast new pistons for the Windsor than mess with different motor mounts, transmissions, bellhousings, etc in production. Imho the 255 only gets a bad rap because its a v8 and everyone assumes that means power. And since it had such a short production run, there were never any new heads or intake manifolds, and the aftermarket wasnt going to develop parts special for one engine when the 302 and 351 were direct bolt in swaps, and they already made parts for those

I built a 3.8 EssexV6 with an Isky camshaft and ported heads. Modified the 2V intake to take a Holley 4V. It made more power than stock but not by much. The inherant flaw is a strong reversion in the intake manifold that puts a huge valley in the torque curve. A 4.2 with the duel port heads might have been a better chioce. Long story short, I am replacing it with a 351W HO.

@BullnoseGarage12 күн бұрын
Great question, Mario! Swapping your C6 for an overdrive transmission like an AOD or 4R70W can usually be done without permanent modifications. You might need to adjust the crossmember, modify the driveshaft, and tweak the linkage, but no cutting or welding is typically required.

@BullnoseGarage12 күн бұрын
Good question! The ZF5 and 360 FE aren’t directly compatible because of the different bellhousing patterns, and Ford never made a ZF5 designed for the FE engine. Adapter plates do exist, but they’re tough to find and not cheap. Even with an adapter, it’s a custom job with a lot of work involved-flywheel, clutch, and possibly input shaft mods. Definitely not a plug-and-play swap!
