Welcome back to Bullnose Garage! Today, we're diving into one of the most popular upgrades for Bullnose Fords: swapping out the old 1G alternator for a 3G alternator. I’m using the 3G I pulled from my 351 Windsor donor vehicle as a visual aid, and I’ll walk you through why this upgrade is essential if you’ve added any aftermarket accessories like lights, stereo systems, or electric fans. The stock 1G alternators were fine for the ‘80s, but let’s be honest, they can’t keep up with today’s demands-especially with only 65 amps. The 3G puts out anywhere from 95 to 130 amps and comes with built-in voltage regulation, giving you better performance and peace of mind.
In this video, I’ll show you how to make the swap, talk about why the 3G is more reliable, and go over the few modifications you’ll need to get it fitted, including swapping pulleys for V-belt setups. I’ll also share some tips on upgrading your wiring to handle the extra power. Whether you're running extra lights, a winch, or just want a more reliable charging system, this upgrade is a must-have.
Be sure to like, subscribe, and hit that bell for more Bullnose tips and tricks! And if you have any questions or comments, drop them below-I’m happy to help.
