she wasnt very good really; tara may be the olympic champion but in the pantheon of skating greats tara doesnt figure; no one will ever say tara is great; she was a tiny woman who could do jumps but as a russian commentator said she gets one centimetre off the ice when she jumps

I've watched most of Tonya's performances [in video form, as well as live, when they were performed] and to this day, never cease to be blown away. Read lots of the comments on her videos, saying she didn't posses grace, style, elegance, etc. Just check out the segment of her program in this video where she skates to "Europa." One of the most beautiful, if not THE most beautiful sequence of movements I've ever seen. All you naysayers, get glasses!

I keep going back and forth with the results of this. Discounting ALL the judges' scores, and considering the commentators' words during all four performances showing no real bias towards or against either pair, it would seem that S and P would have won BASED ON THE USUAL SCORING. A technical flaw like that against a technically perfect program - the only way the Russian pair SHOULD have been scored higher here is if they were doing risk elements that no other pair was even trying. (that's the general rule in singles skates, anyway... say a guy has a near perfect with triple-triples all over the place, then someone skates BETTER but attempts a quad and falls - and he is the only one attempting a quad that night - he won't be penalized for it. He might even be rewarded for it). But I don't recall B and S trying any risk elements that were uniquely difficult. So in the end, it would seem that based on the status quo of judging, S and P were guaranteed a win after having excellent artistry and NO technical deductions. That is why, I think, the double gold makes sense instead of JUST tying them in the LP, which would have given only B and S the gold. So it's not really a "loss" for B and S. They still won the gold. Nothing was taken away from them. Anton fell out of a jump, but they still won gold. That's saying something, I think.
