As a further comment, MMJHCB's statement that Mickey Wright is the greatest woman player ever is as true today as when she played. One viewer stated that sponsors would actually withdraw if Wright didnt play!! This is true. Playing on poorly manicured courses. Using outmoded inferior equipment. Even more incredibly, Wright drove her car on average 50,000 miles a year!! Clearly, Mickey Wright played a different game in every conceivable fashion. Even the great Annika Sorenstam, speaking of the Tom Watson vs Jack Nicklaus duel at Turnberry spoke of how unforgiving the equipment was in their day. WRIGHT USED EQUIPMENT THAT PREDATED THOSE TWO LEGENDS. Annika wss great. There was only one Mickey Wright. The 500 pound GOAT of women's golf.

Imitating that swing requires a tremendous amount of athleticism and strength. The swing looks powerful because Palmer was an incredibly strong man.

Arnold was the nicest superstar athlete that ever existed. No athlete was as kind to fans as he was. As a result the world loved him to the end. Every golfer today owes him a huge amount of gratitude for their career.

To comment further, did you notice that Mickey on one hole with a following wind hit a ball 310 yards?! With a Balata Ball and Persimmon Wood Driver!! That distance, with that equipment, in a Wind Tunnel would be Promethean. No golfer that ever existed had greater extension and a larger Arc to her swing than Mickey Wright. That is why her commentary at the end of the video on achieving swing width is so appropriate. On Golf's Mount Rushmore, Mary Kathryn Wright sits front and center. The lady GOAT for all time.

Its ironic that Gene Sarazen was the commentator in this match. Sarazen always maintained that Joyce Wethered, was the finest woman player ever. After watching Wethereds swing , I can state it was no contest. Mickey Wright had a far greater swing than the British legend. Wethereds action was a looping, almost ungainly effort compared to that of the Southern California legend. Bobby Jones once stated of Wethered that " I have not played with anyone. Man or woman Amateur or Professional, that made me feel so utterly outclassed." A strong statement. I'LL GIVE YOU A STRONGER ONE. Ben Hogan is universally regarded as Golf's greatest Ball Striker. He stated that Mickey Wright had the finest swing he ever saw. Man or Woman!!! This Genius who competed against the insanely smooth Sam Snead. Against the Swiss Watch precision of Byron Nelson. A man so precise he couldn't play a golf course twice in the same day. Why? Because he'd be hitting out of his own divot marks in the second round!! Hogan said her swing was the best. WHO COULD POSSIBLY KNOW BETTER?!! Many people maintain Annika Sorensram is now the greatest woman player. While the competition was stronger in Sorenstams era, Wright won 80 tournaments in ten years. And more Majors than the celebrated Swede. In a far shorter span of time. One thing is certain. Place Mickey Wright in a time capsule. Give her modern day equipment. Then place her on the tee against any player, before or since. I like those odds just fine.

@joshuawhittemore1283 That is true. Hogan himself said Wright had the greatest swing he'd ever seen. What more can anyone say? Ben Hogan knew more golf than any five instructors put together. Wright would watch Hogan on the range, making sure to stay quiet, so as not to bother his concentration. This had to be like DaVinci watching Michelangelo!! She also worked with the great Harvey Penick, who many consider the best instructor of all time. Fellow San Diegan Gene Littler also helped influence her rhythm. Wright's masterpiece of a swing stemmed from a combination of influences that will never be seen again.

@@donaldschmidt2990 To study under Hogan and Harvey Penick! That's amazing! I never realized just how close knitted these athletes were. There really was a competitive camaraderie there. Nowadays it seems like everyone keeps to themselves. I just watched two videos that really drove this home. Tom Watson walking side-by-side with Jack Nicklaus at Nicklaus's last competition and Nicklaus's tribute to Arnold Palmer. They really were out there united by the love of the sport.

@joshuawhittemore1283 Players were openly engaged with each other more in that era. Hogan was about the only one who didn't give any secrets away. HIS ANSWER WAS "THE SECRETS IN THE DIRT." Hogan did help.Ken Venturi, Wright and a few others. One fellow he worked closely with with was the Marvelous George Knudson. What a ball striker Knudson was.

I remember when I went to the UNC Golf School back in the 90’s the coach was there when Love was there and if anyone is familiar with the range they are they sort of have two areas that hit towards each other but they were like 300 yards or so from one another. Behind one of the ranges was houses and behind the other range was a parking lot. When Davis Love had to practice with his driver they would have to do it at night when the golf course was closed and they would have to have guys in the parking lot with catchers mitts. It was a surreal experience for me being from the north. His swing was so effortless. he was the one I wanted my swing to be like. I played in college and I was known as a long hitter but knowing he was using actual 🪵 was so cool. The golfers back in the day were such ball strikers compared to today. You can miss a ball and have it actually still end up where you wanted it to go. I played with blades when I was playing a lot, and let’s just say they’re not as forgiving as the AP2’s. They were standard back then. I’d be interested to see how today’s players would play if they were given a set of clubs from the mid-80s.

I watched Eamonn Darcy on several occasions in the 1970s and 80s; he was a massive guy, huge hands, broad torso, but lean. Andy Gray (Cleveland Golf Club, Redcar) was paired with him at an Open qualifier in the 1990s and reported it was hard to explain how good Eamonn's ball-strike was, and described his game as "at another level". Eamonn is one of the nice guys too; lovely natured and pleasant with everyone. (As is Des Smyth - a contemporary, and another fine Irish talent in his day.) The late great Peter Alliss in a moment of dry humour, approximated Eamonn's golf swing to watching someone wrestling with a set of bagpipes for the first time. (It took the rest of the commentary team - Dave Marr? and a couple of others whose names my memory fails to recall - a minute or two to recover their voices from laughing!) Eamonn shared genuine camaraderie with his fellow players and the galleries. He NEVER complained, and was always courteous to spectators following him around the course. They were great times - and to me Eamonn played a big part in making it so.

A wide arc is nice but doesn't ensure distance and isn't right for every player. It can cause a pronounced lateral move to the right which isn't good for any shot. It certainly worked for her.
