Servo brakes were a pain in the arse when I worked for BMW. Pushing bikes inside at the end of the day, it was VERY easy to ram them into windows/other bikes when you pulled the front brake to stop them, and.... nothing happened! Silly idea.

Yes the brake light would come on with the pedal normally and cruise control would set and be cancelled with the pedal, so the micro switch was working.

The Versys was a fantastic all round bike, really enjoyed it and would of kept it if it wasn't for a niggly issue I had on my bike. The quickshifter between 2-3 would often miss going into 3rd properly and would jump back down to 2nd or find a false neutral. Apparently it looked like a problem that others had experienced also, even the MCN tester who had the bike on long term demo. Everytime it happened I thought oh you have to go, if it wasn't for this issue, I would of probably kept the Versys as it was such a comfortable and capable bike.

It doesn't seem that common a problem tho, if your bike has no problem I wouldn't worry about it, or try to replicate the issue, but it's happened enough that googling the issue quickly finds others with the same issue.

@martyshep99 Hi Martin, thanks for the reply. Great to know you liked the bike overall....but I guess I have that quickshifter problem to look forward to having bought mine as a "zero" miler just a couple of months ago. It's my second Versys and I do love it....albeit much of the fancy gear is surplus to requirements for me. I just wanted that specific colour scheme and the TFT screen which I have a chance of being able to read, unlike the postage stamp sized LCD on my 2018. That said, I have come to appreciate the quickshifter having never had one before. Will keep tuned in to your adventures. Cheers 👍 Paul

Proper bleeding of this system means also changing the fluid in the ABS which means removing the tank. This system is not a simple bleed at the calipers like other conventional brakes

Good man, excellent comprehensive video covering how to remove the servo pump. I had exactly the same as your bike with literally no rear brake, absolutely no failsafe mechanism, which is a bit of a howler mistake by BMW. Got my kit from Motorworks today and have the bike converted and bike back together, took about 4 hours to strip and rebuild. I actually prefer the positive feel of direct line brakes, and at least I have the confidence to commit to cornering again, knowing that I'll have a back brake again.

Thanks Martin, your video helped me "sort" my brake failure warning light. I didn't do any work to the bike but when I listened to your commentary at the beginning, on the rate of flashing of the light, I realised my warning light was probably normal and only needed a 5 metre run for the abs to calibrate. The reason I was unaware of this is I bought the bike about 5 months ago and had it delivered by the seller, straight to my garage, never ridden as I had a r1100rs on the go at the time. Old bike sold and can now book this one in for an mot! cheers Jim

Does the blipper work on upshift from 2-3?
@rastofikfak8069
@rastofikfak8069 Жыл бұрын
@@martyshep99 Yea it works from 1st to the last. From 1st to 2nd it is feels harder for the machine. Some people use cloutch when shifting from 1st to 2nd. When you shift into a higher gear, the gas lever remains in the same place as when accelerating, you shift fast, decisively but not roughly. RPM must be 3,200 or more. When you shift down, you have to release the gas lever and shift again fast, decisively but not roughly.
@martyshep99
@martyshep99 Жыл бұрын
@@rastofikfak8069 'Blipper' is an additional function of some (not all) quick shifters which allows for it to be used for downshifts. There is no blipping when upshifting using a quick shifter. It is a known problem of shifting between 2-3 while holding the throttle in the same position that is bounces back from 3 into 2. If you watch Schaff video Kawasaki Versys 1000 sound [RAW Onboard], at 4:34 in his video the exact same issue occurs.
@rastofikfak8069
@rastofikfak8069 Жыл бұрын
@@martyshep99 True. Versys uses quicksifter with blipper, but when we are tolking about versions (only QS or witk blp) to be short, we say just Blipper. The blipper serves to interrupt the ignition when you shift down. Most of the time you downshift when you reduce speed, so you release the throttle, although exceptionally you can downshift to gain engine speed and power, for example just before overtaking, . The reasons why the quickshifter does not work properly on just few - some engines (regardless of the brand) are usually: 1. The transmission is new and has not yet been engaged and therefore shifting into gear is more difficult and stays between gears, or drops back into a lower gear. 2. Due to rough or insufficiently determined shifting, the dog teeth wear out. This is especially common with test engines. You can destroy gearbox very quicklly. 3. Quickshifter is not set properly - as your mechanic to check it out. As not at all all Versys have problems with Blipper, please let me know, what was the reason of your problems.
@martyshep99
@martyshep99 Жыл бұрын
@Rasto Fikfak Have you ridden a Versys 1000 with quickshifter? There are many reported cases of the quickshifter having issue on the Versys 2->3 upshift where it changes to 3rd but then ~500ms later it drops back into 2nd gear. When using the clutch or when doing an old school clutchless upshift with the KQS disabled, there is no issue at all. I will have manufacturer look at it to see if there is anything that can be updated in the ECU, if there is later software update as it is not just the quickshifter that is involved. The QS is a normally open circuit on the Kawasaki and QS comprises a microswitch. When the lever is moved for up or down shift, the pressure closes the microswitch which completes the circuit and the ECU has the logic and timing for the ignition interrupt. The interrupt should be right as the gear selector drum moves so is literally a ms before the shift fork starts to move the gears. This interrupt unloads the gears so the selection of the next gear is engaged before the interrupt is finished. I've noticed that the interrupt of the ignition on the Versys is quite a long time, which is noticeable when using the quick shifter at WOT and high revs, where the bike dives when doing the upshift and temporary reduction in power is noticed. The same issue is not present on the Ninja 1000 SX, it's almost like the KQS on the Versys is intended as a smooth shifter rather than a quick shifter.
