it had to be ground to 20 mains 40 rods. which is what took so long to get replacements because of having to source them from 3 different vendors. Yep, THREE! I mistakenly ordered SBC bearings once and could only get the mains form one place and rods from another.

That is a spin on type that holds 2 quarts. But I decided against it cause I might be changing to a lower capacity pan that would sit higher up off the ground than the one that I have now.

those scratches in the cylinder's kind of look like the ring end gap was too small, check out powel machine shop video's

I don’t need to. Those lines weren’t from the rings. They were from when I was removing the piston and rod. The rod slid on the cylinder wall. Not uncommon at all. They disappeared after 3 passes with my ball hone. Rings are gapped for 30 lbs of boost.

Couple of thoughts, a BBC's distributer sits right up against the firewall might want to check if you have clearance there, what transmission do you have? I had to learn the hard way that a BBC will twist the input shaft off of anything smaller than a TH400 or better. Not sure if your familiar with the old BBC's but all of the head bolts have to have sealer on the threads or it will fill the motor with water.
@overyonderjustapiece
@overyonderjustapiece 10 күн бұрын
I have already test fit the distributor. It is a small base MSD clone. I have to put the engine in with the lower part of the distributor in the intake because of the cowl not being tall enough to allow me to get it in. And this will be MAYBE a 350-400 hp engine with the small cam. Unless I can get the LS sold, it will go in with the iron heads. If I get it sold, I will POSSIBLY order some aluminum heads and switch to solid roller. And the transmission will more than likely be either a stock type 400 (regular automatic) or a powerglide. This little truck would be RIDICULOUSLY fast with even a mild BBC, so anything much over a stock stall converter would pretty much be a waste.

And yes, I do know about the head bolts needing sealant on the threads.

@@overyonderjustapiece I twisted the input shaft off on a powerglide, I can also remember using 2 feet on the brake to keep it from pushing me through redlights, I now run a 3500 10" converter. I still run iron heads always have, mine have been ported and bigger valves & springs installed. One big thing you can do is to install a copper shim head gasket but check your valve clearance.

@@overyonderjustapiece I'm no expert, but I think oil weight is determined by bearing clearance to some degree, I know some nascar teams run 0/20 for qualifying. I think Lake Speed is some kind of engineer and has some informative youtube channel. I would do some research as there is a lot of different opinions on which oil weight to use. Just my opinion, but I think 50 weight is a bit heavy.

It's a little hard to see well in the pictures but it looks like some of the rods are installed backwards. Each rod has an offset toward one side. Check if each pair of rods have them offset toward the center of each crank throw rather than toward the outside.

@@overyonderjustapiece My big block in my Chevelle has run 10w/30 oil for the entire time I have owned it since 1972, it is setup up for 600hp. And yes I run synthetic 10w/30 oil now days. Those bearing can be read they will tell the story why not post a real good look of them and the crank wear? I think you lost oil pressure somehow.
@overyonderjustapiece
@overyonderjustapiece 19 күн бұрын
@@gregalot200 I kept a pretty close eye on my oil pressure majority of the time I was driving it. I never saw it go below 40 lbs unless it was idling at a light. Which it sat at 25 lbs usually. I honestly think it had something to do with the oiling modification that forced oil into the hose for the bypass that went from the pan to the top of the block. Maybe that was a restriction. But I have removed that and also removed the block off in the block passage. So it should work better now that it has a fixed passage to travel just as the factory intended. It will get a cleaning and more than likely put up for sale so I can go ahead and build the 454. Whether I sell it as a short block or long block or running engine is still to be determined. I just have to make up my mind what I am going to do and start getting stuff listed.
@overyonderjustapiece
@overyonderjustapiece 19 күн бұрын
@@gregalot200 And just because the engine is set up for 600 HP, most folks don't turn a big block to 8000 rpm unless it has all forged internals and is balanced. While mine is balanced and is built to go to 8000 rpm, the oil choice clearly was not ideal for that task. My big block will be pretty much out of steam for RPM at 5500-6000. It is just a hydraulic flat tappet cam and lifter combo with less than 550 lift. I made it more for torque than horsepower since I run 1/8 mile stuff. So it should still be pretty quick and zippy little truck unless I sell it before I get the engine together.
@gregalot200

@@overyonderjustapiece That sounds more like it to me, years ago I tried installing a remote filter setup, your setup sounds a lot like mine, I ended up removing mine soon after because I felt like it was costing me oil pressure, back then I had hydraulic lifters, they would rattle after I installed that kit.

10/28/2024 UPDATE: Got the tires swapped and balanced and that pretty well resolved the vibration issue. I am having to have the wheel spacers for the wheels machined out in the center some cause they are not sitting flush against the rotor face. Which allows the rotor to run wobbly and make a GOD AWFUL screeching noise. Hopefully tomorrow I will get them back and be able to everything finished up so i can take it on a longer trip. When I went for my drive earlier I leaned on it pretty hard and it only had a stumble when I got into the back 2 barrels. Only took it a fraction of a second to clean up and really put the power down. It pulls HARD at full throttle in 3rd!! I still need to adjust the shifter cable a little bit. Other than fixing the oil leak at the cam sensor, finishing up the wiring for the shift controller/digital tach, the headlights, the air compressor, and finding a turn signal relay that doesn't quit after 5 seconds, I should be good to go to drive it all the way to the track Sunday to spectate and race in a slower class. Oh, and adjusting the alternator position again. I went from 4 behind to 1 behind and 3 in front to try to get the belt to run straight, and it went from almost walking off the back of the balancer to almost walking off the front of the balancer. I will get it close enough I can maybe switch to a 5 or 4 rib belt so it stays on even if offset a little bit (front 4 of crank back 4 of alternator). It will still charge fine. Since putting on the alternator, I have had literally ZERO starting issues. I do have a digital volt display on the way, and it should be here before going to the track.
