Aww, we started around the same time! I finished the first 4 weeks of Drawing Foundations I, but then I got distracted by Mr. Rey’s anatomy live class, which is super fascinating, but I definitely feel like I need to get back to the fundamentals. First, thank you for your kind words!! And that "weird phase" was literally me as well! As soon as I started working I just couldn't help but feel like all I really wanted to do is just get better at art. (I have a video talking about this if you want to hear more about the full story) I understand that feeling of frustration. I agree that an education is very very important. And not in the traditional sense of an art school or art atelier, but learning the fundamentals like you said. (Drawing is a skill just like learning an instrument or new language). If it's any consolation, there are so many amazing art classes online now. It's like a "build your own art education" out there at a fraction of the cost of art school. You can take classes with literally the best instructors in the industry and get direct feedback from them. The best part about a 9-5 is that it gives you the safety in your life needed to pursue art and $$ to afford classes/supplies! Start with small habits and build up. It takes time but it's so rewarding. INVEST IN YOSELF!! Wishing you the best!

Ive been having a lot of executive dysfunction about taking the nma drawing fundamental classes because of the traditional materials i have to buy 😢 do you think it's possible to do the assignments digitally or maybe there wouldnt be as much benefit? Where did you buy your materials? Or does nma suggest where to buy them? Also your video inspired me to take kirk's analytical figure drawing live class and i loved it so much, i hope he offers more feedback classes in the future so i can catch them. @@xiaa Thank you so much for your continued support!! It means a lot to me! It’s definitely possible to do the assignments digitally. It takes some modification but as far as feedback and completion goes, the nma team allows any medium for hw submissions. They are not strict on materials at all. Drawing foundations 1 definitely needs a variety of drawing materials, which can be a pain if it means having to go out and buy stuff one week. It’s an extra hurdle on top of everything else so I totally understand the feeling. Luckily i’ve managed to accumulate random drawing materials throughout the years, but even so i still bought a fresh sketchbook to work in, and various other supplies. I get my art supplies from dickblick online or locally from michaels/hobby lobby. Some of the assignments would definitely be easier/faster to do traditionally, but definitely possible to do digitally. i know of some ppl who have done most of their assignments in digital! if working digitally is what you would prefer to get you going, i say go for it! it’s the concepts that matter the most anyways. So happy to hear that you enjoyed kirk’s figure drawing class!! That class is really challenging but so amazing. Hopefully he will be offering classes soon next term!! @@williammclean6594 i hear you and i understand. i suggested the live class over the recorded version because i think it’s a lot better bang for your buck, and if you have a hard time with motivation, i find classes that force you to do hw actually super beneficial. at least for me in the beginning it’s how i got myself to spend more time on art! so i think live classes are super good for the motivational aspect of things. although i agree they are very time consuming so i totally understand why you want to just do the videos first. if u change your mind you can always email kirk for a discount on the live class if you have bought the videos. As for the ADHD, getting urself to do something as difficult as learning art is super challenging for everyone. Drawing is a habit that takes time to build up. Try not to beat urself up about it, it is very very challenging to do. I used to take adhd meds for a couple years and ultimately quit because of how they were impacting my health and my mind and soul. but what i learned from it was that this art stuff is hard and that your focus can be trained and developed overtime. i don’t think the labels are too beneficial to ppl because often it makes them believe they can’t do something, if that makes sense? good luck with the classes if u do them, and im curious to hear what your experience of them will be!!

Also the apple pencil nibs are 5$ to replace so I don't think it's a huge deal if you do have to replace them. I'm not sure but I may have mentioned this. I stopped drawing probably for like 5 years because I got really depressed. Went through some really big mental problems. Now I got back into it and I'm improving. I've always kind of wanted to like make this my career. Somehow. I've always wanted to get into the industry for art working in games or animation comics. I tried going to college but I dropped out because I don't want to do something that doesn't make me happy. And I found every career that's not artistic to be extremely boring. Like every career. It's so boring. Nursing ,lawyer computer science ,business. So I'm just working like a minimum wage job at a store and doing art. I live with my mom so I don't have that many expenses. And working at a grocery store. I feel a lot of the people that work there are just doing a 9 to 5 and they're not really happy or doing anything with their lives. Most people just like go to work. Then when they get home they watch TV and go to sleep. It's like they don't have any dreams. Like the managers at the store. It's really a no experience job like you learn on the job and then you get to be a storm manager. I don't know for me that seems depressing like why would you want to be a store manager? I wouldn't find that fulfilling. It's like literally anybody could do that job. Like they didn't even want to go to school for anything? But I guess sometimes life deals you a bad hand. Some people never figure out what they want to do so they just end up in whatever job. some people don't have a choice they need to work two jobs just to survive because they have to take care of their kids or life is just too expensive. Or sometimes you could go to school spend all this money and not even get a job. It's not like our grandparents generation where you could go to university and you are guaranteed a job. So I guess if they weren't passionate about anything that requires school. Why even go to school and risk getting into debt when you don't have to.
@lydiarocheart
@lydiarocheart 7 ай бұрын
the student loan debt thing truly is tragic. i can’t believe how normalized it is to take on hundreds of thousands of debt to go to a school that doesn’t train you in skills required for any job. i think most people have jobs that are a means to an end and i dont think there is anything wrong with that! pretty much how it’s always been. im more concerned with how people are spending their time outside of work. like u said if they are always just watching tv and not doing something to grow themselves meaningfully or spend time with others it’s probably bad. but i get it. it’s so easy to just watch tv after working a long day and unfortunately these things are designed to be hyper addictive and keep our attention. don’t even get me started on video games haha. glad to hear you have been steadily improving in your art! it’s not easy but we are planting seeds and who knows where this journey will go!

@@lydiarocheart yeah I guess like I'm the opposite like I think you should have a job that's like meaningful but also do meaningful stuff after work as well. I see your point that it really is kind of a means to an end. I honestly think we spend too much time at work. Not enjoying our lives. Like our Life is too short to be constantly working, so I always thought that your job should be meaningful. If you have to spend most of your time at it and something you actually enjoy doing so it doesn't feel like a job.
@williammclean6594
@williammclean6594 7 ай бұрын
@@lydiarocheart yeah also the student loan thing. It's mostly just like American North American thing. Because like in some European countries I think it's Norway or Sweden or something you don't really have to pay for university. I think there's like a test and if you pass it they'll completely pay for your school. But over here it's just a business like people will go in and like switch majors like three times and then they lost all this money. They kind of want you to like go to school and switch majors like milking you for money. The good thing about a lot of jobs now that you can learn everything at home through the internet or books. A lot of employers now. They don't really care about your degree as long as you can do the thing that they're hiring you for. They don't care where you went to school or if you never went to school . That's especially true. If you want to be an artist working in entertainment, you don't need art school. You can learn everything at home. Basically. I kind of want to get into the industry but I'm kind of scared with all the AI. Will it really replace every artist or maybe they'll only need a couple artists per project? And the rest will be just AI so it will be harder for like artists to get into the industry if they don't need that many artists because like the senior people that actually have a job they probably won't want to quit to let new people in.

Hi! If you're curious about Watts there's a youtuber named Becca Rand who has posted tons of stuff about her experience with Watts. I watched a ton of her stuff before. Someone asked about Watts on another video yesterday so I'm just going to copy/paste my response from that. "i actually started out with the Watts online subscription based program so i am pretty familiar with them. i think their online streaming feedback based classes were amazing (different from the subscription based program) but i think they’ve shifted their focus to in person classes so those don’t seem to be available anymore. the current online program is good but tbh it’s not super beginner friendly. if ur looking at subscription based classes i’d actually check out NMA since they offer rlly good beginner classes and they have a thing called interactive courses where u can submit hw for feedback, similar to Watts. im really impressed by the classes they have and im actually going to be making a review video of NMA but won’t be for another few weeks. but i highly recommend checking them out!! (if u are going the Watts route, i highly recommend the fundamentals head drawing classes done by Brian Knox, those are really beginner friendly!). also would be aware that a school like Watts specializes in the reilly approach and in stuff like charcoal and gouache so it’s much smaller in scope. NMA is much bigger in terms of the different instructors and approaches they offer. it’s worth trying out for a month to see what u like or doing like a free trial). all that said though Jeff Watts is a super inspiring teacher. his teaching is like listening to motivational speaking haha"

Thank you so much! where I live is a small town and I don’t have a studio to get guidance. I’m hesitant about online classes because as you mentioned having someone knowledgeable giving you a feedback/ critique is the way you can mitigate making same mistakes or acquiring bad habits.

I'm glad the algorithm brought me here! I'm taking an online painting class at New York Academy of Art on the weekend while working a full-time corporate job. The online course has been so helpful to improving my art and it's added so much to my life. I daydream about being an artist full time or even making money off my art but so far my corporate job is paying the bills. At this moment the best I can do is try to practice and make art in the limited time that I have and enjoy working on the homework for my class. I plan to hopefully take another online painting class in the future and I will definitely check out Watts Atelier and the Kirk Shinmoto class you reviewed. Hope to see more videos from you!

That's amazing!! I'm so glad to hear that painting class has added so much to your life. Such a difference it can make in our day to day. For online feedback painting classes and workshops I've heard some great things about Warrior Art Camp (warriorartcamp.com) so they might be worth checking out! I also recommend checking out New Master's Academy - actually working on making a review of them to be able to share more in depth but it probably won't be out until next month. Anyways thanks so much for sharing and for your support! :)

It's so interesting! When I first started taking online classes I thought surely the rest of the students are going to be high schoolers or art majors right? Found out that there are so many other people in tech or other unrelated fields taking these classes!!

I appreciate you mentioning not wanting to use that nice toned paper and using printer paper instead for about of this bc I always feel like in running out even when I've got multiple unused sketchbooks which is often a barrier for me to start

i feel you! i think nothing would have gotten done if I tried using a sketchbook xD, it's was like, 10x added pressure as well knowing that I can't erase when using pen.

Was recommended this vid by the algorithm overlords, hi! Think there are some (generally applicable) key takeaways here. Firstly, going into career for reasons very little to do with interest with the career itself, yeah probably not gonna be the best time and luck is gonna be a very big factor. Using said career as a means to a completely unrelated end... That's not to say one can't pursue a career and art at the same time, many artists are like that! But I think an ideal is a career which you take interest in based on its own merit, the alternative is volatility. And about mentality, yeah an all-or-nothing mentality is EXTREMELY dangerous in skill-based hobbies. Ultimately you just gotta get the bloody reps in and get started. How much time you have available for it is situational and may change depending on your future priorities and responsibilities, but DO SOMETHING. If you let go of expectations, focus more on the enjoyment of art, of visualizing some cool stuff, it's so so so much easier. And the way us humans work with any skill, the same amount of time spent in minor increments over a longer period of time will always produce higher ability than the same amount of time condensed. Best of luck all!

i think art is something that takes a long time to get good at. like u said it’s about getting the reps in. in the meantime i think it’s perfectly okay to have an unrelated job sustaining you on the side. a lot of ppl don’t necessarily know what they want to do coming out of school and even those that do, the reality of the job we were dreaming of doesn’t always meet our expectations. (tho i think the worst is if they took on a lot of student loan debt for a job). at this point, i dont even have specific career plans for art but it’s a seed i feel is important to plant and intrinsically important to me. i often think if i were to have pursued art from the jump, maybe i would have always wondered about what it’s like to code. anyways, thanks for the long and thoughtful comment!!

Yay you posted! I love hearing your thought process because its so relatable! I felt for you when you said you cried in front of your managers. Your story reminds me of so many of us kids of immigrants who were told to follow a certain path but that path is so overloaded with work and no fun time! I think there is so much potential for you in creating content about your art journey because of how relatable you are! I was able to sit through this grueling treadmill workout because of how focsed I was on your story! The courses you're doing are courses people wanna be doing and don't have a lot of reference to learn more about it! I encourage you to post more! There's another creator I follow on here who posted about her journey and it was clear she wasn't making art because she loved art and it was fun but rather to create something to "show off" and I stopped watching. But I can tell for you its a innate passion and I can't wait to see your growth!
