I took dynamic sketching with him during the Pandemic. God that class kicked my ass, but it was the best damned art class I have taken in my life. I am 42 and have taken a lot of art classes in my life, and nothing has come close to this.

@@lydiarocheart Thanks! Can I ask you a question? I recently decided to take art seriously beyond doodling. That’s why I’ve been looking at fundamentals i.e. drawing boxes…But it’s surprisingly hard, like even when my eyes can literally see a real life cube in front of me, I can’t make make my hands draw exactly what I see. It’s frustrating bc what seems so easy-I can literally see the lines-comes out all wrong when I draw. Something as simple as a box shouldn’t be so hard…I thought. Wondering if you have any advice or thoughts :/ It’d be nice if I could take classes with real feedback but that’s not possible for now

It's a really good question! And you're absolutely right, drawing seems so seemingly easy but it involves so many different processes - your hand eye coordination and then actually trying to translate real life into lines on a page. It is a super challenging thing to do. It feels even harder at the beginning because you're learning so many new things at once. It helps to focus on one thing at a time so you don't get bombarded. I think at the beginning you should focus on two things which are building dexterity (getting your hands to do what you want) and proportion (getting the lines/size of what you draw to match what you see). Some ways to build your dexterity are to continue to draw but before drawing sessions you might want to warm up by just drawing straight lines, circles, ellipses, c curves, s curves, etc and just get used to your hand making those motions. It might not seem like a lot but 10 minutes or so of doing that before you draw really starts to make a difference over time so it will definitely get easier to "make" your hands do stuff. Or look up dexterity building exercises such as ones in drawabox or wherever. For getting better at proportion, that takes time as well but there are tools that you can use to check your work such as a vertical or horizontal plumb line. For example if you're drawing a picture of a man standing, imagine a straight line running down from his chin to the ground. Is that line crossing over his left nipple and his left foot? If so that imaginary line should also be crossing over the same parts in your drawing. Not sure if that makes sense, but googling vertical plumb line might help to give a visual example. Another helpful tool is using comparative measurements like finding the halfway point or seeing some measurement looks like a third of something else, for example. It's completely normal to feel frustrated. It means your eyes can tell when something is off so it's not a bad thing! I think a good and fun way to practice getting better dexterity and proportion is to find an art book that you like and just copy the drawings and not overthink things too much, mainly just ask yourself if what you drew looks like what you're trying to draw. You might hear stuff like "copying is bad" but at this stage you're developing your hands and eyes so I think it's a perfectly great way to do it. It's gonna feel very frustrating at times and you might even question yourself because shouldn't drawing be fun? But I promise it gets more and more fun when you start to slowly improve. The most important thing is mindset and not beating yourself up - this took me a while to realize!

I just had one more burning question: Did you ever struggle with perspective? I’ve actually tried drawabox for a bit but gave up because I just couldn’t rotate boxes or create them seen from different angles in my mind. Is this also something you can get good at by drills? Sorry if this overlaps with the dexterity advice you gave me. Wasn’t sure if perspective and dexterity are along the same lines. This lack of spatial reasoning is really kicking my butt 🥲 and honestly I wonder if simply repeating something you don’t understand many times will help you “get it” eventually. Do you have any tips on wrapping your mind around perspective? I’m currently going through a perspective lecture and Perspective Made Easy by Norling
