What would the purity be if the foils were melted without all the acid treatment? Cheers
@badideametals16 күн бұрын
There would be a higher chance of more base metal impurity in any refinements when more metals are present at the time of Aqua Regia. Any steps used to pull contaminating metals free of precious metals prior to AR would help the gold be more pure... doing a few extra steps before the AR wash means less refinements overall to reach a target purity. In all of my videos, I pretty much do a single refinement. I always refine again when I combine batches, so I don't really focus too much in my videos about .999 purity. I eventually get my samples to that point. So in short, sure, more base metals mixing around in the AR would have a greater chance of precipitating out with the SMB. Copper "piggy backs" out in my reactions often enough that I have seen my share of "rose gold" which need at least 2 refinements before it looks pure again. Anything that can be done with cheaper acids to pull off base metals will help you save money while trying to make money.

Volts don't matter much. You should check the amps.

I only had the multi-meter when I recorded this video. If I had an open circuit because of a shorted diode, I would have shown 0 volts. I was not checking for efficiency here, I was checking for viability. I was happy to see the volts were on par with what I expected.

I have access to a local chemistry store. I can't get reagents or compounds through them, but I can get the hardware. Their prices are not great either... but I don't have to wait, I don't pay shipping ... not directly I guess. And finally, I was tired of glassware coming broken and I would have to reorder. Now I can pick it off a shelf and be done :). It is nice to have that massive one.

Could you have dropped a magnet on the disc, or held a magnet just above the disc while spinning the disc, and destroyed or irreversibly corrupted the information on the disc while it remand on the motor?
@badideametals29 күн бұрын
It is called Degaussing when you use a strong magnet to wipe or corrupt data from a drive. It is a popular approach in the movies. However, there are some problems with it. 1: It is not consistent. It may wipe part of the drive... which means you will have partial data still on the drive. 2: It is hard to verify that the data is truly destroyed if the MBR or index of the drive is damaged. This is really still #1 in my explanation, because again, this is a partial wipe, but you can't confirm it without recovery software to prove that you can no longer recover data. All because a drive does not register intact data blocks does not mean they can not be sniffed out using recovery software. 3: The true degaussing magnets require power usually. Electromagnetic tools are better then just any magnet sitting around. In short... my experience, and my opinion here ... it is easier to physically damage the drive or do the DoD wipes on the drive then to try Degaussing.

I have some old camcorder batteries (the long rectangle ones with terminals on the sides) from the late 80s, obviously 100% dead, that I plan on taking the cells out of to replace with nimh cells (way safer than lithium and easier to charge) so I can use the camera in the way it was intended to be used, and with a much better run time.

Do you know what off-gas is produced when soaking in the crystal lye, please?
@badideametals3 ай бұрын
It depends on the concentration of the aqueous solution. If there is a very low concentration, it "could" be just water vapor, but this is not likely, and there are great debates on that. Most likely, it is tiny aerosol particles of sodium hydroxide (Lye). The NaOH (again, Lye) can burn and irritate mucous membranes, eyes, and other sensitive areas of your face, lungs, and sinuses. Once used during World War II to help with high altitude breathing O2 tanks, Caustic Soda (and yet again, sodium Hydroxide) was used to help scrub CO2 so that the O2 could be reclaimed and used in a "rebreather" sort of way. However, when the mix "goes bad" which I don't remember the details about, the result would burn lungs and sinuses which would leave permanent damage to the pilot. (Look up "richard best, caustic soda") If you want to see what lye does if you breath it in ... Dick Best would be a more extreme example as he went into a long day of fighting over the Pacific about mid 1942 when his mix went bad and he chose to keep fighting. It ended his career as he developed Tuberculosis and was forced to retire as a pilot. Way more then you wanted to know... but that would be my guess what happens when lye gives off gases, especially when it is heated.

2:00 I believe judging a broken panel by measuring "Open Circuit Voltage" is cheating yourself - and in the case of the guilty installer, your customer. Open voltage does not tell you much about the remaining power generation capacity of a broken panel, so when the panel is loaded, the power generation capacity is the one you should pay attention to measuring. The current that the panel is capable of delivering after the glass breaks down is the real thing - not the voltage. 3:48 Why don't you move the second panel further? Now you have a measly 6" wide Walkway between your two panels, and you really have to balance so you don't fall over one or both of them. I don't understand this kind of stupidity.

@badideametals4 ай бұрын
My experience with RAM recovery has been pretty close to what I said in the video. DDR3 is pretty good to recover from. That RAM may not get $600 ... it is an estimate, but the last run I did got me over $1K ... but I did not count the sticks... just the weight of the chips. And that did not include the fingers. But at the end of the day, the machine was saved for me to do just this with it. It was an old enterprise machine that was to be dismantled for parts. So, it is now dismantled...

I am glad you sub'd too :) To answer as many questions at once as I can: - I have been programming computers since I was 8 ... ya, that labels me as a nerd. I was building computers at 15. I graduated school before the Pentium 3 came out, so building computers meant (back then) that I had to be able to recognize ports, chips, and card slots for compatibility. - I went on to be a hardware and software tech for a help desk while getting my CS (Programming) degree. My first job out of school was to work for 2 companies getting servers configured and maintained as well as other hardware repair duties. - Now I kind of do a little of everything, including recycle ... Most things I knew before starting the channel... many things I learned as I have been going. When I identify things incorrectly, there are enough smart people that help me in the comments ... I am grateful for those who call out the correct identity of things when I slip up. I have a server teardown I am posting here soon. I hope to post Friday. Then a gold recovery to edit and post. Followed by an Apple M1 that went nunts and needs to be openned up. That one may be interesting too ... that is for next week.

@badideametals4 ай бұрын
I have been looking over this comment for the last few days, and I am still not sure if I understand it. Are you saying you can't get chemicals? If so, I have found that lab providers carry basic things. Nitric although dangerous, is very common. Hydrochloric Acid is also called Muriatic Acid and can be picked up at home improvement stores near the paints departments. If picking it up directly is tough, look on ebay. Some of my best providers were on ebay until they got bought by bigger companies. I am sorry if I did not grasp the purpose of your comment. Thank you for leaving one :)

After 2 years of this repair, how have the panels held up? Has anything happened to the clear coat after being the >120F temps the panels can get to day-in/day-out??
@badideametals5 ай бұрын
They still are in good operating condition. I don't put too much load on them anymore. I had to run power out to my shed so I could run a greenhouse fan 12 to 18 hours a day. I did not want to risk my plants to a small capacity battery pack. So I use it for lighting. I have not had to resurface or treat the coating since recording this video. Hard to believe that was so long ago. The panel has not yellowed or cracked with the heat of daily exposure to sun and weather. I may get a new charge controller that would allow a wind turbine to be added to the system. That would be my biggest disappointments is that I have too small of a system for what I would want to do with it.
