Great video Tom. The Black 5 is a favorite of mine. Short and stubby looking but the Stanier tapered boiler gives it so much charm and character. It reminds me of the LMS Jubilee Class, which is another favorite locomotive.

Hi Tom, nice video of a good run you had. The loco runs really well. I spoke to the current owner at length about the loco. A really nice guy. I plan to build a 4-6-0 tender version of the class 4 loco. If anybody could assist in locating sources of materials and components for my project that would be great. Great video of a great place. Thanks for posting your run. Well done. Best Wishes. Andy G.

Thanks, Andy, Spoke to the builder Dave Bentley, he confirmed it's Jim Vass drawings, and details off Doug Hewson 5'" drawings, plus his own interpretation from full size photo's from when he had a footplate ride on full size. A lot of the details being made from scratch, hand valve's, gear change box,etc. Len Steele injectors & safety valves, Boiler by Helen. Wheels cast from his own patterns. Any info please ask. Maxitrak have been making live steam locos since 1980. They do not need work to make them go. You may be thinking of some other manufacturer Tom Hughes.
@tomhughes_3 жыл бұрын
Trust me when I say that it is common knowledge among the model engineering community that their newer models like the 4f and pannier tank are generally not made well and some need complete bottom end overhauls to fix this. Having said this, some batches are better than others and I know that there are a few 4fs that are running fine out there, but mine was a flop from start to finish. If you did some research, you'd see that is it out there for all to see. www.steamworkshop.co.uk/portfolio/5-lms-4f/ www.steamworkshop.co.uk/portfolio/5-lms-4f-3/ These are just the first listings I found online, and they both talk about tolerances not being very good and a rebuilds needing to be done. Maxitrak have, similar to other competitors, started to move their manufacture to China to skimp on costs. Now we all know the sketchy reputation of the parts that come out of there. Due to the bronze bushing probably not being bronze, my 4f needed rebushing after about 10 hours of running, which I then sent back to maxitrak to fix. When I got it back, they were still as bad as the day it left, and one of the new bushes had come loose, so was not longer pressed into the rod, allowing the rod to slide along the bearing. In the video you can also hear a knocking, which is due to the poor tolerance on the crosshead, so it whacks up and down as it reciprocates. Again, after about 10 hours of running. If you want to blindly follow a company and trust that because it's done good business in the past that it's still that way, I'm sorry but there's no hope. If you really want, I can list all of the things wrong with mine.
@tomhughes_3 жыл бұрын
It also looks like you work for maxitrak / have affiliations to them, so I won't embarrass you by putting the video on public, but this was their attempt at a rebush and the state of it after only about 10 hours running. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqCtfWdjqtVnac0

This looks like an E2? So it's a Minx converted to a tank engine? Do you have drawings/etc. ?
@tomhughes_3 жыл бұрын
Yup, it's a tank version of a LBSC minx. Don't have drawings as it's a friend's loco. Have looked online and can't see any sellers, so might be worth an ask on Facebook if you're looking for some
@williamsworkshopuk3 жыл бұрын
@@tomhughes_ Lovely stuff - I've got the drawings for the Minx and it seems very doable - but I would really love to know about the tank arrangement. Is it something you might be able to ask your friend about please?
@tomhughes_3 жыл бұрын
@@williamsworkshopuk Jim Ewins, the guy who built it has since passed, and seems to have done it to his own design. Unfortunately there aren't any drawings for this arrangement.

I'll be purchasing a 4F and love your video! How Manny people can the little guy haul? Alex said 5-6-7 on even grade. You get much slippage with the 0-6-0?
@tomhughes_4 жыл бұрын
It should have been a good engine but let down by material selection and a few design issues, a shame but everyone who's had one says they need work to get right. It's a great looking engine, but I found even with some work done on it, it struggled to pull 1 adult up a small incline due to lack of power. So unfortunately, no slippage to note. It has the potential to be a great passenger hauler if you want to put a lot of time into it. Hope this helps
